    Ciao everyone! A little week in the life vlog for you! I have been making more conscious and sustainable choices in my daily life and thought I would share them with you! What easy sustainable swaps are you making?
    On this channel, I share #slowfashion and #sustainablefashion tips that center around how to shop your closet, and restyling pieces you already own. I also spotlight brands that I believe in every now and then. I believe in #creativityoverconsumption, and that we all have the power to be conscious consumers.
    Slow fashion looks different for everyone, and I'm so grateful you share this space with me!

    In my Swedish village we have a Freeshop - a large barn where we can donate clothes, shoes, books and any other stuff and we can bring home anything for free. Volonteer run. Majority of my (stylish!) closet come from there. It's also cool that one can try new styles, for free! It gives me such a feeling of abundance. It's always over full of clothes and other stuff.

    A little tip: Turn your clothes inside out when you're hanging them to dry in the sun. The colour won't fade and the clothes will last longer.

      I do the same! This also prevents bird's poop to stain clothes. At least, if you get a stain inside out, it's easier to make it disappear when you wash it again. I also love that the sun makes white clothes whiter.

    I always have little chuckle when I see Americans, Canadians & Europeans talking about washing in cold water and line drying their clothes in the sun 😀 Aussie here...that's all we do! My mum was always so particular about how to correctly hang your clothes to avoid fading, stretching and wrinkles - oh, but way too complicated to explain to you 🤣😂🤣 Her methods work tho'! I actually think that tumble dryers destroy clothes - I only use mine once the rain becomes biblical.

      ahhh i LOVE that! I would love an explanation! That is like a crash course in good laundry! ugh yes - dryers are so tough on clothes!!

      Oh yes, one of the many pieces of advice from Mum is to teach us the correct method of dealing with washing in the Australian sun and weather. Cold water to save fossil fuels and water, sun for quick free drying and to kill any germs on clothes and to peg correctly to avoid peg masks. I’m always correcting my French hubby. 🤷‍♀️

      I am French - exactly the same. I almost never use my dryer, not even for my towels

    • @wavyjenny602
      @wavyjenny602 3 роки тому +5

      Here in Spain it’s the same: almost nobody has a dryer and we wash in cooler water (apart from sheets, cleaning cloths and towels) to reduce the impact on the clothes as well as the environment. Correctly hanging clothes is key to avoid them being misshapen when they dry. But also, one trick I learned from a friend years ago was to hold a garment by the seams and shake it vigorously before pegging it. It shakes out the creases so that the garment dries less creased. I now have a clothes rail on my balcony and shake all items before hanging them on hangers, and I iron almost nothing as a result!

    Alyssa, you have changed my life! I love your videos. Your style is so similar to mine (although I am 63). After several years of illness, during which I put on weight and lost interest in myself, I am now losing weight healthily and need to get back out there. You have made me fall in love with clothes all over again. I have 'shopped my closet' and curated my wardrobe, and yesterday I spent just £20 in charity shops (I have always bought second hand) and, inspired by you, I bought 8 amazing pieces which I am now taking the time to style. Covid restrictions end here in the UK on 19th July and I can't wait to get out there and show off my 'new' wardrobe and my new-found confidence. Keep it comin' at us!!!!

    Great that you share tips for increased sustainability in everyday life. I work with sustainability research and would like to comment on one thing: Don't be too hard on plastic bags: if you have a plastic bag and reuse it, it is far more sustainable than throwing that away and buying a new textile or a nylon one as these have to be used several thousand times before they "earn" their carbon footprint, so to say. It is also far more important to focus on what you put in the bag rather than the bag itself: do you really need your purchase? Is the purchase itself the most sustainable choice between equal alternatives? Thank you for a great channel!

    In Australia we line dry most of the time and an adage to go by is to 'hang tops by the bottom and bottoms my the top'. That way any peg marks are minimised and they hold their shape well.
    A cute embroidery patch on the stained pocket might work well. A little embroidery bee or bug or flower etc. Most fabric stores sell these embellishments and they can just be ironed on.

    Ah, you are inspirational! I love how you talk about sustainable living as something that gives you inspiration and energy, rather than something that restricts you and just makes you feel like you're never doing enough.
    For me, my favourite sustainable swaps ( next to second-hand everything and upcycling) are:
    -outdoor space: Even just taking one paver out and creating a tiny space where rain water can percolate into the ground and where plants are welcome has such a positive influence on your environment.
    - transport; I've found that walking, biking and public transport instead of taking the car have been a sustainable habit that I really enjoy, and it has been so beneficial but for my mental health as well. And in so many cases I'm just as fast by bike, as I am by car. ( then again, I live in a very bike-friendly country, so that may play a part here)
    Thank you again for your wonderful videos, I really enjoy your style and your message!

    Another great video - thanks, Alyssa! I was always forgetting my grocery and produce bags as well but now, instead of taking them out to the car as soon as I've unpacked them (the car is parked a little way from my door and out in the weather so it's not always convenient), I leave the empty bags by the front door... that way it reminds me to take them out to the car when I'm next going out! And I totally agree to wash in cold water and turn the garments inside out... but do it before you even wash them. That way any friction they're exposed to in the machine will be on the inside of the garment, not the outside. :-)

      I don't have a car so I make sure I have at least 1 shopping bag in each of my handbags and the rest are in a little cabinet at the front door. I also use a granny trolley when I buy groceries.
      (And if I end up with plastic bags somehow I feel no guilt cos I just recycle as trash bags - I never buy specific trash bags)

    Hello from Ireland. So lovely to see more of you in 'your natural habitat'. You are a gem, a gem. I don't know if you grow herbs, berries, veg, salads, roots, beans... you seem to have outdoor space, but that might be communal. In 6 years I have gone from growing 2 or 3 veg organically to about 60 different veg. It is slow (unless it's radishes or some beans), and a trial and error endeavour, but it is my escape. It's so fresh for meals, and I can be so generous to others as there is often more than we can use. Eventually getting around to learning about growing non edibles from seed, for the bees and for beauty. The insects, the wildlife.... just watching them is so gentle and funny.

    • @susie9893
      @susie9893 3 роки тому

      Communal doesn't matter either so long as your landlord/body corporate doesn't mind.
      My brother and family live in a block of units where they have a big paved space out back and pretty much everyone (in the building) has at least a few pots in that space - they've turned it into a potted garden and most grow at least a few veggies - it's like an explosion of plants and they use the walls and fences too and there's a picnic table out there (and my brother's bunnies love their outside time there)

    Growing up, my parents taught us to turn off the shower while we soaped or shampooed, rather than having the water run continuously. Have gotten so water wasteful with time. :-(. Need to return to my childhood ways!

    • @wavyjenny602
      @wavyjenny602 3 роки тому +1

      Me too! Also important to do so when brushing teeth, to not waste water. My parents have a large container In the garden which is filled when it rains from the gutters. They then use the rainwater for watering plants and washing the car. My cat seems to only want to drink water from the running tap (faucet) so I have bought a miniature fountain so that the water is recycled to ensure she is hydrated without wasting water. We use the air conditioning outlet water to water plants on our balcony, since it doesn’t rain as much here. Barcelona is very humid so there is quite a lot of water on a daily basis! We have installed an awning on our balcony which provides enough shade that we don’t have the air conditioning running for as long as we used to, but it still puts out a lot of water when we do!

    Other than grocery bags, I also save take out containers and leave them in my car. So next time I couldn't finish my meal at a restaurant, I don't ask for another to go container.

    Some of the most fun gifts I’ve bought are second hand. My mom collected teacups - she liked having an assortment of them. They were easy to find, too. I’ve also searched local shops for fun, old artwork (old maps of a favorite place are fun to give). It’s definitely more effort to think about what to give and then to find it, but it can feel rewarding.

    • @AlyssaBeltempo
      @AlyssaBeltempo  3 роки тому +4

      YES! I found a local seller who takes vintage teacups and writes the best messages on them in gold pen. Totally agree that it's more effort but such a special gift!

    • @susie9893
      @susie9893 3 роки тому

      My sister buys most gifts second hand. She buys most of her kids clothes there cos they grow out things so fast and it's either that or buy cheap crap - so she just has a good look around while she's there (she has found some pretty good stuff).
      Then I have another friend who we've had to BAN from dropping off donations during business hours - she's trying to go minimal but if she drops stuff off while they're open she comes away with more than she left 😆

    I don't have a yard but I use an air dryer over my bathtub to dry everything but sheets. I live in the States now but I got in the habit when I lived in the UK where lots of people use them (or they used to, not sure about now) and, you're right, air drying makes a huge difference in terms of clothing longevity (as well as being better for the environment of course!)

    It is a journey but as long as we are becoming more conscious of our impact on Mother Nature, you slowly start to see how far you have come. Small steps are so important. My consciousness started at the garbage bin. Then fashion. Now I have moved with my family to the Australian bush, living off grid (rain water, spring water, solar electricity, no garbage collection etc). I use metal straws, coffee cups, smoothie cups and bamboo cutlery set when I purchase outside of the home. Cold water, soap nuts and Australian sun for washing clothes. I was bought up by a thrifty Mum, so have always purchased second hand but definitely buy less fast fashion but it’s a hard one to do completely. Still working on that one. Reusable bags and container. Composting, recycling and reusing food containers, donating to tip shop, outlets that recycle specific items like eye glasses, mobile phones, ink cartridges, soft packaging recycling etc). I buy food in bulk when I can and buy local fruit and veggies. I support local businesses which also means less impact on fossil fuels and roads, as the product is transported in one truck to town/village, instead of hundreds of cars travelling at least an extra 1 hr round trip to the larger town. Buy goods that are sustainably sourced and/or in sustainable packaging, less packaging. And the list continues to expand. I would say my journey started when I was pregnant with my son 17 years ago, and continues today. Small baby steps forward, but I am constantly moving forward as it is now habit and my thought process whenever I make a choice or decision, involves sustainability and impact. Can’t change overnight, but know every change helps. Every single change. Love your vlogs. Loved your videos from years ago, but you look so happy and content in these, it’s relaxing to my soul when I watch them. Thank you for sharing. 💕

Currently, I wash on cold (and use laundry sanitizer for bedding and undies), use eco cycles, dry most of our laundry on hangers in the laundry room to extend the life and save on our carbon footprint. Oh, and we purchased a programmable countertop oven...it's amazing. It's fast, cooks super accurately, uses far, far less energy (and gives off much less heat, especially in summer) and should pay for itself in about a year. It does eveything from turkey to cookies, pizza, toast, roasts, broils and slow cooks. Love it!

      That's great but lol, my sister bought this toasted sandwich maker which turned out to be an amazing find for summer. Here in Oz you just don't want to cook thru the summer at all! (and many Aussies have an outdoor kitchen aka just a bbq in some cases, cos of this) but she can grill meat in half the time cos cooks top and bottom at same time, cooks eggs, waffles, pancakes - basically she does all their cooking with this all summer (which, where she lives is at least half the year 🙄).

    Great post! This could be a great quarterly series. My sustainable contributions, as tiny as they are, include using Bees Wrap rather than cling film or tinfoil; using bamboo or palm leaf picnic accoutrement rather than plastic or styrofoam; air drying my clothes (takes planning and effort) which has an evaporative cooling effect in the room where they hang; buying in season fruit and vegetables from the corner farmstand; of course using my cloth shopping bags; doing a quarterly purge of clothing and housewares at the local opportunity shop; and using TerraCycle to send back healthcare and beauty product packaging. And I just discovered Swedish dish cloths as an alternative to paper towels (so far, I am loving them). Thanks for letting me share, Alyssa! And because of you, we will a wonderful pasta salad for dinner!

    One of the things I do is re-use resealable plastic bags. Originally I thought I’d buy sustainable ones after all the baggies were used, but after two years, I still have nearly the same number of sandwich and freezer bags. It’s nuts how long those last. Lovely video🥰. Can’t wait to have a yard large enough to hang my clothes to dry outside. It all gets done inside. My extra laundry tip is to use vinegar instead of fabric softener. You don’t smell it at all and it keeps things soft. I still have a Downey ball from 20 years ago that I use with vinegar. Love my laundry strips, too! Now when I go down the detergent aisle at the store, I feel like I’m going to be sick with all the strong scents!

    I've looked again online but alas can't find the article; I remember reading that we have already mined enough natural resources (like gold, copper etc) to produce what we use in production every year. The thing is it's in items that have not been recycled "yet?" (such as old mobile phones, laptops etc) so we just keep mining instead.
    Recycling is important and really makes a difference.
    If something is too new to recycle, try donating to charities that refub' tech for developing countries/poor families/victims of house fires etc etc.

Her entire process is self funded (including things like lodging for all project members, tech, and food), and she provides things like cell phones to her project team members so they can stay in contact because they're too poor to afford their own. I've never thought about purchasing tech second hand for myself though. Definitely want to look into it! What a great partnership Alyssa, congratulations!

    There's a Canadian non-profit organization that takes your pre-owned devices, refurbishes them and donates them to charities across the country. You can find them at era dot ca That's for Canadians looking for sustainable ways to dispose of their old/unwanted devices.

And yes, there's simply no other way - I also always do my laundry in my fancy clothes and usually also leave the heels on 😎😆 Thanks for a good laugh. Ciao Bella, and have a wonderful weekend! Big hugs, N💗

    Another tip for laundry, specifically to reduce microfiber shedding of synthetic clothing into the water supply is to invest in a Guppyfriend wash bag. You put your clothes made of synthetic fibers in the bag and it traps over 90% of micro plastics that break off your clothes. Additionally it can reduce the number of fibers that break off your clothes by up to 86% thereby extending the life of your garment!

    I never ever use a paper to- go- cup at a coffee shop. Most people I see sitting in my local coffee shop have their paper cup , their paper sleeve topped with the plastic lid, which we all know goes in the trash. Why cant they get it in a ceramic cup if they are staying at the coffee shop??? Anyway the biggest factor is when you make coffee at home you don't put it into a paper cup do you? Coffee is so much better out of a ceramic cup!

    • @pohoka_
      @pohoka_ 3 роки тому +1

      As I see, here in Canada using paper and plastic cups are just easier for the coffee shops. And a few of them won't even give you a ceramic cup when you ask for it. I'm from Europe and I've never had this problem there.

    I wouldn't peg your tops on the shoulders- it can make a peg mark or pull the shoulders out of shape. Fold the t-shirt over the line and peg it under the armpits. Then if you get a peg mark it doesn't show!

    We also hang clothes outside to dry in California! Sometimes it's even more hot and dry outside than in a dryer. When I was little everyone used those wooden clothes pins. Now I could only find plastic ones which break easily in strong UV light. What a waste.

    Awesome 👏 Hang drying my clothes makes them smell so nice. For your shirt, put a cute patch or embroider something on it if you know how. I was using bags for groceries seriously 20 years ago. You can carry more things and you don’t have to worry about the bag breaking. I have had people give me second hand items as gifts. It was because whatever it was reminded them of me! I know a few people who wouldn’t care but there are some who may feel insulted. Personally I love hand me downs in fashion furniture etc. I really want to work on refashioning. I have done a few easy things like change buttons or add trim. Enjoyed your week very much and face it we all end our week doing laundry 🧺 🤣

    Over here, we hardly use hot water, or the dryer, and we are used to relying on the sun to dry the clothes. Speaking of which, I just did a full load, and they are out in the sun, some pieces are turn inside out to avoid fading. Your essential oil tip is wonderful, do you have any tips on natural softener by the way?
    And____ pertaining to reusable bags, I usually leave them just near the door after emptying them or washing, therefore it will remind me before heading out, just my own way of reminder, as I live on a high-rise apartment, and the car part isn't just outside the door ;-)

    The way to make a positive impact on the community, the world around us, is “Love thy neighbor”. If we all practiced the Golden Rule more, it would be a kinder world, and people would be more conscious of each other and the environment. That’s how I choose to walk in life.

So now I see why you have those great legs and small hips! It's all that running! I used to love to run but due to multiple injuries, I can't run anymore and it's hard to walk long distances. Are you single?! Always wondered why the small closet, although I do love it very much. Love you! 🥰 XOXO

      I think it depends on the item and the person you're buying for. You can get some really unique things secondhand AND very person specific.
      I probably wouldn't buy 2nd hand tech for someone (but I probably wouldn't buy NEW tech for someone either, tech is so personal these days, everyone has their own v specific preferences in brand, requirements etc).
      My sister found a little sugar and creamer set for my other sister that are cats. My sister LOVES cats and bcos it was secondhand she doesn't feel guilty about using it every single day (which she does); so it was a great gift
