Bad Apple, but only the difference to the previous frame
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 гру 2023
- You can only see the difference to the previous frame. Gray means that the color didn't change between the frames, black means it changed from white to black, and white means it changed from black to white. Things that don't move (e.g. the orb at 1:38) become invisible because of this. This should in theory work with any video, but I think Bad Apple shows this effect best.
The effect was made in Blender using compositor nodes.
And no, I did not see Posy's video until after I made mine, but both use the same effect.

she deletes everything from existance just for a second

I like how it gives a strange 3D look to it, like it's a liquid being raised and lowered in certain places.
its kinda like the moving box ilusion
The original animation was rendered in 3d. Its just hard to tell the to the monochrome colors.
@@lunathecutest6652Ohhh that makes a lot more sense now... with the movements and all
@@WellHowAboutThatHuh i am a 3d animator, i know it when i see it. Its especially evident in the scene with the boat.
@@sekiezkoggit is essentially the silhouette of a MMD animation. You can search for the non-silhouette animation someone made (I think the original's from NND and some bloke reuploaded it on YT). Pretty cool stuff nonetheless
You can see how much movement there is in the animation.
if you enjoy seeing the movement in bad apple, i would suggest watching "bad apple but the colour channels are slightly out of sync"
That I think is my favorite thing about this. it really emphasizes how fluid and clean the movements are in Bad Apple. This is a delight to watch.
Smoother than ever
Yes!! Hardly anything in this video becomes invisible, and when it does it's only very momentarily!
So true and you can also see the clear colors in this video
The T-Rex can't see you if you don't move.

That's because this is very close to the raw motion data processed by our brains. Have you ever seen motion illusions that trick you brain into seeing a wobbling or shifting image just through shapes with static black and white outlines? It's really similar to this.
This edit is to the motion of the original video, what subtitles would be to the words of the original audio.
@@instantnoobthats a really good way to put it
This is a testament to just how smooth the original animation is
higher fps / animated on ones ≠ smooth
@@disrespecc9678 I never insinuated that it was equivalent? I just said the original animation was smooth?
@disrespecc9678 I meant that in the sense that, even when you only have small details to see the animation with, it still makes sense and flows naturally.
I agree with your sentiment but you're being incredibly rude and aggressive about it, why do you find this such a hill to die on that you want to harass other people about it?

@@disrespecc9678 I uh, I don't think you know what the word "smooth" means

Honesty this effect seems like it could be super cool looking if there was a good way to include a videos color.
Since it was done in Blender compositing, a node setup could be done to overlay the non-gray areas of this output (this video) over the original video.
It would be a bit less clear on a video with full colour, but the same idea can be done. Perhaps it would be worth trying on a cel-shaded style video.
If it's done on a Blender rendered animation and not just any video, then the difference calculations could be done to the "mist" depth output (black is far, white is close) and then overlaid onto the colour output.
[Edit: I might have got the close and far mixed up.]
Kind of can work if you shrink the colorspace, which is what this video does to the black and white video. Normal videos have RGB values ranging from 0-255, but if you take a change in an RGB value, that can range anywhere from -255 to 255. Then, simply add 255 to this new change (so it's now 0-510) and then divide by two (0-255), allowing it to be mapped to RGB values. It might not be extremely intuitive, but it could work
Posy made a video titled “Motion Extraction.” If you’re interested in stuff like this I’d check it out.
i would just map hue only or hue and saturation
These videos are very much a guilty pleasure of mine
doesn't matter if it's been 5, 10, 20 years I'll still watch these all the way through
It creates such a cool 3D effect at some points like the first broom transition
The original video was animated in 3d and had an effect placed over it
@@HighEffortUsernameyes that is true but that has nothing to do with the embossed effect here.
I was actually not expecting this to work this well. Things are actually in constant movement in the original, whoa
that's how captivating and lively animation is made!
i love how sometimes it looks like a fluid, and sometimes it looks like paper cutouts it just shows so much personality
Pov: A t-rex that got distracted by a funny looking monitor while trying to escape Jurassic Park
this gives off the feeling that these are like paper cutouts casting shadows
because I know nothing about image science this is just "bad apple but your eyes won't focus" to me. Good work with this!!
The black parts are the "new" parts, ie, where the characters moved to (or when the color flips), and the white parts are the "old" parts of that character's shadow/light, ie, the parts they pulled away from. The gray is the static background.
@@NotSomeJustinWithoutAMoustache yeah, i read the explanation in the description, the visuals just reminded me of my personal vision issues. thank you for the explanation though!!
this video made me realize kanako moves and doesnt stand still until she poses with suwako in the mv and i didnt know for the past few years....
This is really a testament to how impressive this animation is because every single frame has to be drawn and because of that the fact you can see everything all the time is super impressive.
It was actually 3d animated but its still very impressive
Not drawn. 3d animated. Still impressive
this is really cool from the perspective of an animator, the difference in frame rate to show velocity of movement is so impressive
Ain't gonna lie, this is actually a pretty neat style
this is the closest thing I can think of to the derivative of a video
It gives it such a cool cut-paper effect. I’d love to see like an indie game do something similar
What, where the mechanic is that you can’t see still things? That would work for a platformer.
This is such a fun idea, well done. Did you do a raw export of uncompressed frames? I love the idea of HEVC using difference frames to encode difference frames and I'm wondering if some funny artifacts got inserted in.
check the description
@@everypizzathank you, but the description doesn't discuss the stream encoding, which is what my question was aimed at.
@@ThisNameMakesNoSense sorry
No, I used Blender's FFmpeg Video output with MPEG-4 container and H.264 codec. As far as I know, Blender doesn't support HEVC natively.
@@Pasu4 you get the idea from Posy? I saw his video and have been thinking about the possibilities for weeks
Out of all the versions I've seen, this one might be my favorite.
So this is what it feels like having vision based on movement.
Bad apple but you're a T-Rex
Stand perfectly still, Touhou players can only see movement
If you move even a litle, they'll calculate your movements pattern, and you'd be dead.
This really shows how much movement is in the original.
"Movement recording" looks much cooler than i imagined
i like how for a brief moment it looks like eirin is reaching towards nothing
Probably the best music video to try this effect on. And what a result!
0:51 honestly my favorite part
It looks like it was carved out of stone, in fact, it wouldn't be a bad idea if you had put a stone texture in the background.
Now I wanna see bad apple but played in a stone tablet
Basically its just bad apple but you can only see them if they're moving
Bad Apple through Doggo’s (from Undertale) eyes
This makes me appreciate the animations and transitions even more!
this is kind of like a visual way of seeing derivatives
An approximation, but yes essentially
Something cool about this is that this is pretty much how morphological edge detection works in digital image processing, and the video being composed entirely out of black and white cartoon silhouettes makes it very easy to appreciate!
I like how positive and negative differences show opposite colors, it gives it a really nice visual effect btw

There’s something really interesting to say here about animation, frame rates, interpolation, and how the human eye and brain work to make whole images out of fragments that I’m not qualified to put into words but I sure do think is neat
when the things completely disappear, and you go watch the original and see the still frames, and every moving part... it really makes you think
genuinely such a cool effect
Someone finally found the derivative of bad apple.
This is amazing! I love how they disappear sometimes, it just adds to the animation, and I love how they flow about!

Since there tends to be black and white on opposite sides of a moving object this successfully creates the world's shittiest embossing filter
Bad apple: shaders on.
This would be one hell of a form of vision for a living creature
idk why but this makes me think of paper when I look at the animation

It has become tradition to watch any Bad Apple variation that pops up in my feed
If you're into mathematics:
Ah yes, the derivative of Bad Apple
the transition between patcholi to remlia is flawless
This just shows how much movement there is, even in those seemingly still sections there is always something different.
So this is how a T-Rex feels.

Довольно оригинально, не смотря на то, как просто в исполнении
this proves how well the original was made, rarely any full invisible frames
and you can usually always see people fully
my brain is lagging from this video
This reminds me of the 3D drawing feature they introduced to the Nintendo 3DS.
It's crazy to see just how big of a part motion plays in our perception of the world
This is actually so interesting to see as an animator. Getting a visual representation of just how much motion there is, even in shots that look very still
This is how it feels like to me when i learned to look at the magic eye version of this
this has made me realize how odd the camera is
I read the description and think I know why this got recommended… I’ve done some blender animating myself. Nice work with the frame movement effects!
Reminds me of that one effect every TF2 video essayist under the sun does every time a weapon is mentioned.
It's awesome how to this day people keep editting Bad Apple.
I like how 95% of the original video's content comes through completely clearly here, to the point that if you hadn't seen the original in a long time and you saw a clip from this you might think this *was* the original and you were just remembering it wrong... and then the other 5% is things just instantly vanishing.
It’s like everything is moving forward in reverse
I don’t like how accurate that is
They learned to move so slow that they become invisible to the naked eye
whenever theres a bad apple remix video on my recommends, i always gotta watch it.
I love how it looks like it has a sort of bevel filter on it
This is the perfect example of how video codecs compress file size
The visual effect this creates is genuinely incredible... if it had a "baseline" thickness for how much of the current frame it shows to prevent the near fade-outs in slower scenes, it would look insanely cool as an artstyle imo
dude, this is so cool! thanks for making this
I think its fair to say bad apples the GOAT of transitions
It kinda ends up looking like a displacement map from a 3D model
It cant. See us. If we dont. Move.
So this is what it feels like to have vision based on motion.
Simple to understand yet incredibly elegant and well executed idea!!
