I am a gamer and I think the statement that "games make you smarter" is about the same as "alcohol improves social life" there's some truth to it but its a double-edged sword
I've played video games since I was 7 and I'm 33 now. The ONLY real problem is when you get a kid who hasn't been raised properly uses video games to act out on aggressive tendencies. The problem is the parents not a VIDEO GAME. We shouldn't modify an artform because some people dont raise their kids. Will they make us smarter? Overwhelmingly the answer is YES. They already are. It depends on your definition of smart, but if you want to talk about basic human reflexes, you should check out a game called Chunithm. It's insanely hard and will be directly affecting human evolution to be playing such an advanced system for so long. We will become faster and learn to economize, become efficient... Games are the nature of innovation... The other problem is the danger to your body from spending a life sitting down playing video games. You must keep you body healthy. Don't sit around for hours playing a video game in one position, take it from me----you will regret it

I see this as a great example of the problem with the word "smart." There are mentions of IQ here and there, a few instances of learning in a classroom environment, etc. I would have preferred the motion be worded more specifically.

As Daphne mentioned in the statement that playing video games like Call of Duty can have lasting cognitive benefits, I am a big fan of this game. I started playing this game since I was in high school, and I'm still playing it. It has benefited me, such as teaching new vocabularies, improving manual dexterity, and having better social skills. So, I highly recommend playing Call of Duty and other video games.
Video games aren't just video games, there are many forms of different video games. For example, there are many forms of 4X games that encourages strategic thinking, especially on higher difficulties. I have, for example, completed the likes of Total War: Rome 2 on the hardest difficulty, and I have learned many things as well as gaining intuition for lessons from Sun Tzu: The Art of War in unifying the chapter of espionage to "know thy enemy", for example. Not to mention, I read all the encyclopedias of Total War to Civilization to Endless Legend. Many games can improve various cognitive functions, however, some are just so, simplistic. In which case, when a game doesn't help with improving cognitive functions as it has reached an upper limit (e.g. Skyrim etc.), I find that these games are so relaxing in their open world that immersion itself is exactly like meditation.
I agreed that video games make people smarter but I think that was a result from some games that contain a good content that improves players. I think that the debate is just trying to find what games can improve us like a normal discussion than talk about what factor that all the games have and can improve us.
I feel this is too complicated of a question to be handled in one debate, and the examples given for both sides missed the mark. When they say smarter, are they referring to the amount of accurate information that can be learned through video games? If so, then that would depend on the developer of said game. If they are referring to cognitive function, then that debate would have to go down the rabbit's hole of which functions and whether or not they're being stressed enough to cause growth in those areas. Different games force you to interact in different ways. Call of Duty has more to do with reflexes, as in whether or not you can perceive a threat and respond quickly. Stealth games, the original Splinter Cell for example, focus more on pattern recognition and problem solving as they reward players who can bypass enemies without being noticed. The level of difficulty probably plays a factor to. If you are playing a COD campaign, you can play on easy, and breeze through levels. You can also challenge yourself on its hardest setting. Regardless of what you do in life, you will never grow as an individual if you do only what comes easy or is comfortable. I feel that video games, like other forms of media, can only give what their creators are willing to put forth and what their audience is willing to take. They can be leisure activities designed as a relaxing way to escape, or they can be stressful endeavors requiring a lot of trial and error.
That guy's "peacemaker" game is clearly an outlier in terms of educational content. The vast majority of popular games, the vast majority of time spent gaming, is nowhere near as educational.
Thats more a function of the types of games people choose to play. FPSs tend to train reflexes and not much else, however strategy games can be a bit more cerebral, they are simply less preferred by a large chunk of gamers.

I totally agree with first expert who mentioned that he played game for two hours, and then he understand the Middle East conflict than watching news for two years. I think some game gives us brief information with the animation or story which make us understand some history that has a length more than 4 or 5 years.

Both sides seem to be in agreement that games can be designed to teach you things and both sides seem to agree that mass market games (brain games or otherwise) really don't teach you much. It's definitely interesting, but that makes it hard to choose which side is right when they both seem to agree with everything that is being said.

I agree with his opening statement that argues for video games. The just of it is that when you find a way to influence people and find a way to open people's minds to things they would otherwise not be open to because lack of motivation and interest, it should not be simply discarded or thrown away because of potential mis use. All great and powerful things are a double edged sword. The greater the risk, the greater the reward. The smartest path to take is always the riskiest and instead of focusing on what may happen as a consequence, we need to be focusing on minimizing those risks the best we can while moving forward. Anything less then that should be considered to be slowing mans progress of obtaining a better future.
It all comes down to the way you play them and what you are playing. If you read super easy books and don't think about what you are reading you won't learn much either.

The first game I played that I think shows it's possible to teach about real life without being a teaching focused type of game is the board game monopoly. I learned that once someone wins and the game is over, only 1 person had fun for the most part lol but there are many things you can learn about each other in that game.

In my opinion, too much of anything can be bad. Playing video games need a lot of skilled eg. making decisions, observant, management, and more! So if you don’t spend too much time on video games, your skills will be improved for sure.
Although not as effective as reading a book, obviously, there still is something to be taken from video games. They're an art form and should be appreciated as such. Will they make you smarter? Well, it really depends. They're made as a source of entertainment first and foremost, but there is knowledge to be taken from them. For example, when I was a kid I learned of what guns each country used in WWII; each tank; different flags, etc. However, nobody is going to play a video game to educate themselves as they would with a book, in most cases.
And can we all fucking stop with the basketball analogy for a moment? Playing basketball *_does encourage growth_*, how is that difficult to believe? As would high intensity exercises for a well nourished and well rested growing teenager. Also, for consideration, you're not going to improve cognitive functions if you're just going to "wing it". Nor will your physical state improve noticeably if you walk on the treadmill while watching the television. You have to push yourself. I did with lumosity, and various of my cognitive functions has improved significantly over the years.
A no-brainer. Of course not, you just think you are smarter. Just look at all the people using 'smart' phones while they walk, talk, drive etc. Just sad folks looking for a life they do not have.

I was addicted to playing videogames for about 10 years and they made me socially awkward, selfish and suicidal.
