Actually, no. This is television. Thanks to the Posse Comitatus Act, the military cannot be used as law enforcement on American soil, except on military bases or pursuing military fugitives.
Nope US Military MP's are federal law enforcement, they have authority over all matter involving the Military and such as this case chasing down escaped fugitives of the Military in which again they have authority and in such they can act as regular law enforcement and can detain civilians if they are involved in the active case. However they can't just going around arresting or detaining civilians if it doesn't involve the Military or an active Military investigation, and now days most of the time the MP will just have local or other federal law enforcement handle it and just go and pick up the suspect if it is off base, and you have now civilian law enforcement agencies that deal with the Military such being NCIS, for the Navy and Marines the other branches have their equalivents. That said it wasn't uncommon in the past to see MP's patrolling around town and even dealing with civilians if they get involved in Military matters or with Military personnel such as fights and such.
Life is simple. You go to school go home and watch the A-team.
