    if anyone is wondering how to boot *into* TWRP (the next step) - on my Samsung J700T1, I had to *uncheck* auto-reboot in Options so when it was done flashing, I could hold power, home, and volume down to exit Download mode. When it exits, switch to hold power, home, and volume UP. then you will successfully enter TWRP. I lost sleep on this one and hope it helps someone else! :D

      On CLI would be `./heimdall flash --RECOVERY recovery.img --no-reboot` (Heimdall v1.4.2, I had to download it manually, had some issues with 1.4.0). After entering recovery mode (check lineage wiki.lineageos) _Factory Reset, then Format data / factory reset and continue with the formatting process_, then adb update and on PC `adb sideload firmware.zip` and reboot, and voila

    Thanks for this! Around 9:00, downloading the Partition Information Table, you say "so hopefully that was saved OK" while clearly the file sizes are zero bytes. Just saying: if that happens, something is definitely NOT OK, and you know quite sure you're not going to be able to restore the PIT.
    After downloading the PIT, the file size is to be non-zero. On this Galaxy A5, it is 8192 bytes.

    Really useful thank you.
    A gotcha I found when using for a Galaxy Tab 2 PT5110 is that if you do the normal reboot after flashing then TWRP doesn't appear when I next boot to recovery mode. Straight after flashing the ROM the very next boot had to be to recovery mode to get the TWRP screen.

    Thank you for this tutorial. It is very clear to understand. The only problem is: My Samsung S5 does not boot properly. Also the standard initialisation of the download mode does not work. I got me a jig connector to set the smartphone directly into download mode. Only, the download of the pit file does not work. Neither using the GUI, nor using the command: "heimdall print-pit". Do you know a solution?

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  7 років тому

      You can not flash without the pit. The program uses the pit as a memory map to determine where to write the new information. If you can not reliably read the pit, you will surely mess up the device if you try to write, but I don't think it will even allow you to w/o the pit. My device and some other Samsung devices have some issue with unreliable USB communication for some reason it seems.. If it has this problem, it can write bad data as well, and mess up the device. be careful if you can not reliably read the pit..

    Thank you for your tutorial! I have a couple of questions, being a newbie perhaps moving from iOS to Android in the nearest future. I hope you don't mind!
    First off, what is the benefit you get from rooting? Is the purpose to install another rom?
    And once you've perhaps done that - can you easily revert the process back to the stock version of the os?
    You also mention how Samsung's booting process (if I understood you correctly) differs from other Android OS's. Is that to say that the Android is a bit more locked to it's mother ship like, say, Apple's phones?
    As you can tell, I have a myriad of questions, facing this leap, because I don't have the time (or the money) to go and make a bad decision in terms of purchasing a phone.
    Thanks for your video - much informative. I hope it's applicable to an Ubuntu-MATE also - but why wouldn't it be... ;) Cheers
    Oh - just another question - if you root and install another rom, do you delete the stock rom or is it simply ignored in the booting process, loading the other one?

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  7 років тому +1

      Hi, rooting allows you to load application on to you phone/table that are not available to unrooted devices. Rooting give you full power over the machine, where the manufacture setting are much more limited. The Samgung is Android as well. Different manufactures require different process for rooting. Rooting is not something that most manufactures really want you to do. They would prefer to keep control of the device i believe. Samsung has this special process, different from other manufactures for rooting or installing roms. I actually messed up my Samsung device and was not able to restore it to the original state. I have been successful with some google nexus tables of doing this. Google nexus are more open to rooting, and it is an easier and less risky process. Also you must find the exact OS for your device to restore it. This is not always easy. The rooting process puts some file in the Android system that allows you to have control over the device. This file can be places there, if you install something in the recovery directory like, TWRP of clockworkmod which allows you to load these root files. you can also load other things as well once the device is unlocked and rooted. It can be very complicated, and every day I am learning new things as well. hope this helps a little...

    • @gid3on
      @gid3on 7 років тому

      Thank you. Helpful answer indeed. However, as so often with helpful answers, it gives ground for new questions, as you yourself mention, of which the most important would be - what to buy then ;) The reason I'd like to switch from Apple is precisely the fatigue of being at the mercy of the manufacturer's whims, but then also to choose to be so at a later point if I so choose ;-)

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  7 років тому

      My experience is that the google nexus is the easiest types to root. I have had success with several different types of devices. With Samsung, I have had the most difficulty with. Every device, even from the same manufacturer is different. If you can get the exact part number of the device before you buy it, you can do an internet search to see how difficult it is to root. Even without rooting, android has a lot of apps that you can load and allows more freedom in my opinion. Not all apps work on all devices. This is one advantage of the apple type model. The less tightly controlled android has some incompatibilities due to this variability. I believe is is possible to jail-break apple phones. This is a risky procedure, I have never tried. Apple really does not want you do to this, so they don't make it easy. Remember rooting and jailbreaking a phone is a risky process, and can leave the device inoperable forever.. I hope this helps...

      Oh yes, Did I mention in this video that this is an extremely risky procedure? This was one of my final attempts to root my Samsung phone. Here is a quote from the Heimdall site...
      glassechidna.com.au/heimdall/
      "How do devices get bricked when flashing?Besides the inherent risks like power outs, accidental removal of the USB cable and the fact that some of Samsung's devices appear to be running somewhat unreliable USB control software;... "-Heimdall website......This seems to be the case with my device. I was originally planning to include this video with my rooting procedure of my Samsung device, but since I was not able to successfully root my device and I felt that this information was useful in its own right, I decided to release this video by itself. Yes I did check the recovery But It didn't look like the TWRP recovery that I was trying to install, so I tried re-installing again using Heimdall. This was a mistake. The green bar only went across about 10% of the way and stopped this time. This seems to have permanently messed up my recovery directory, because now I can not even boot in to recovery. I blame Samsungs unreliable USB, for this mess up during flashing. The phone itself still works fine. It no longer allows me to flash with Heimdall Any more!???.... Not sure why??? If I was able to get it to flash again, then I could try to fix it, but it just will not allow me to do any more flashings of the ROM.. I talk more about this problem in my other video about flashing the Samgung device. Like I said though, the phone still works but, the recovery is AFU!This video talks more about my attempts at the end..."Rooting Samsung Android Device SM-S820L, Is it impossible?????"

      You need to get a valid pit file, or the process will not work.. I think some of these phone manufactures maybe put "protection" in them, to try to prevent people from hacking the phones?? At any rate.. it is a risky process, and every time you attempt this.. you do risk bricking your phone! best of luck..

    Thanks, it was a terrific video. I have a Galaxy S4 Verizon and want to upgrade the ROM mainly in the hope that it will fix the wifi problem. The bootloader is locked. I have been able to root the phone and several apps (TWRP CWM Flashify) "successfully" flash the zip file but when I reboot, the process fails. I've also tried terminal emulator with the same result. I'm wondering if Heimball might achieve what the others haven't or if I can directly flash a ROM with Heimball. Any thoughts?

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  7 років тому +1

      Thanks, I have had some problems, see comments below, that it appears that some of the Samsung devices have issues with the USB communication being unreliable. The last time I tried flashing my recovery directory, it did not complete the writing process, and it messed up the recovery directory on my Samsung device permanently . Now it no longer allows me to flash the device any longer. The device still is operational and is not bricked, but.. still I can not re-flash any more.. nor recover.... Maybe Samsung has something that counts attempt to flash and prevents more attempts than a given number of tries? or maybe my attempt to re-flash the boot messed it up. Not sure??? The bottom line is that this it is a Very Risky procedure, and bricking the device is a real possibility. Then again, Having a rooted devices does give you nice advantages though... It is a tough call that you have to make. If I ever did get another cheap Samsung device again, I will definitely try it again, and make another video too. Best of luck. Thanks

      This is one of those videos that I had to shoot while I was doing it for the first time myself.. because.. once you do it.. you can't undo and do it again.. So I was learning as I was doing it... The pit is essential, because it is the memory map of the device.. Heimdall needs to know that or it will not know where the information must be written on the device (it is not just a backup, as I wrongly stated in the video!). My device stopped communication after a while.. even at the beginning of this attempt, the usb communications was unreliable.. I think the manufactures do things do these types of things to make it difficult to root the device??.. Maybe they limit how many times you can write to the device?? If you can't get the pit, you cannot proceed though.. best of luck!

      Hi This is the recovery mode with the dead android laying on its side. There are two partitions in android devices, one with the main operating mode which runs your phones programs, and the other with recovery mode (dead android), this is used to try to fix/reset your device when it gets messed up. this is the partition that we hope to overwrite with a new boot loader like TWPR which will allow us to load custom ROMs. Yo do not want to be in this directory at this time. You need to used the up/down butting and other button to get out of this mode and reboot into regular mode. I have some linux script I am using at the beginning of the video that test communication with the device by just doing a harmless reboot, I recommend trying these first if possible to make sure communication are good. I had issues with the usb communication with my device, and it ended up messing up my boot loader one time I tried to flash it. The rest of the device still works, just I can not get into that screen you sent me a pic of any more... here is one way that maybe you can get out of this mode.

    How to do the Root on the Samsung SM-J120H with Jodin and heimdall? Thank you ...

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  7 років тому

      Hi, I believe the the same process should in principle work on any Samsung device. It seems that some do have different issues, such as the one I was trying to root seemed to have unreliable communication over USB. The idea is that you have to put a new boot loader on the device so you can load the root files. This can either be Clockwork Mod or TWRP. Every device seems to have its unique issues, and the process is risky, and you do risk bricking you device or making it so it never works again if it fails. With that said there are many that do succeed and the rooting of the device gives you many options not available to unrooted devices. I have never rooted this particular device, If I had I could probably give you some more helpful information... Best of Luck.

    How did you find where downloaded pit is?

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  7 років тому +3

      This pit is on the device that you want to flash. You have to download it using Heimdall from your device prior to flashing it. It is like the file allocation table for your individual device. For instance, if you save a new program on your device, it could change the pit. You have to use the pit that you download immediately before you are going to flash the device. Otherwise, it is not valid, and Heimdall won't have proper memory locations on your device to save the ROM's.

    • @jaynesnetwork
      @jaynesnetwork  7 років тому +1

      It has been a little while since I did this, but yes you have to save the pit to your computer, then in the next step you have to point Heimdall to the pit you want to use. Then it will recognize it as a proper pit or not. I had some issues with mine because it seems like the USB communication was a little flaky and did not always recover a good pit. When this happened Heimdall recognized it a a bad pit and would not allow me to use it. best of luck.

      I was not successful at rooting this particular device because of some weird issue with unreliable USB communication which messed up my recovery partition. When I rooted my google nexus tablet, the TWRP or clockworks mod was used to load the special file on to the device that created the root. If you do not have TWRP or CWMod, then you can not load files to do the rooting. TWRP allows to you flash a file called SuperSU.zip, and this will give you access to root functionality. Hope this helps... All devices are different, and some are more difficult than other to root.. and there is always the risk of "bricking" your device, so proceed at your own risk.. best of luck..

    Your pit files are empty! Look at the size. If you want to back up your os, Linux has an iso creation tool built in. I believe it comes as part of the GCC tools bundle...

    Blah. Doesn't work in Manjaro. "Protocol Initialization Failed" or some such message. I'm using Gnome edition Manjaro... at first I thought it was sudo problem, but it gives error either way... though interestingly the process goes further without sudo. Sad. I should've left that crappy android phone alone

      I know what you mean!!! With this one, I only get one chance though... If I did it once, and didn't take the video... I would have missed my chance.. I actually made a separate video of all my attempts to root this device.. the video is very long and includes all the things I tried.. Thanks again for the morel support..
