Squid - Pamphlets (Official Video)

- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Here's the official video for Pamphlets by Raman Djafari. When planning the music videos for this album we wanted to make sure we covered a few different mediums, so we're super happy to have a freaky animation ticked off the list.
Unsettling? Yes!
Hopeful? Yes!
Life affirming? I wouldn't go that far... but close!
Enjoy.

“The video for Pamphlets is a meditation on the feeling of being unfit, unlovable, not compatible and the manic anxiety and stress that this results in. I wanted to explore a state of mind that I have found myself in many times, of fearing to go outside and being confronted with everything that one cannot love about themselves.
Rooted in trauma that is as personal as it is always connected to society at large, harmful self-images are incredibly hard to escape. The fear of being rejected for the ways one is marked as different and perceived as such, manifested in the presence and gaze of others, becomes the way we see ourselves. We internalize the rejection that we are subjected to. As a result, there is the urge to hide away, suppress and judge whatever it is that we have been taught to hate. Thus detaching from the self and thereby detaching from others.
This is a video that relates to my own experiences as well as it is a solidarisation with everyone that has been made to feel this way.” Raman Djafari
-- Pamphlets Lyrics --
That's why I don’t go
Outside
Pale teeth and white smiles
They don’t care and I don’t mind
Pale bricks and wide smiles
That's why I don’t go outside
I’ve got a brand new car
Right on my drive
But those pale bricks and white smiles
That’s why I don’t go outside
I don’t go outside, outside, outside
I’ve got flagpoles in my sights
Legs still but the herd is in motion
Legs still but the herd is in motion
Legs still but the herd is in motion
Could you do another and could we be in motion?
Pamphlets through my door
And pamphlets on my floor
Open wide, we’ve got everything, everything you like

Just sat in a presentation of the creative brain behind this music video, Ramar Djafari and thought it'd be interesting to know some of his background thoughts on this :) basically to him (short version) , it's about being trapped in your own head, being too scared to go outside because you feel worthless/ ugly/ invisible etc and then at the end, how that pain and loneliness can be channeled into art and becomes a part of you and your personal development.
Thanks for this!
how does one channel their pain and loneliness into art tho
@@youokboi8556 just doing art having comed to terms that it will fucking suck for a long time while you slowly improve
@@youokboi8556 I had an old instructor who said the most effective way to make art from within is to either find a way to shout how you feel as loudly as possible, or push yourself to find a way to describe your feelings without speaking them. His example was a painting he made about how apathetic he had become after his family was killed in Palestine. I can't describe it accurately enough to do it justice, but it was a piece of incredible pain through intense color. No figures, no people, no text. But visible pain and resignation in the work. He never submitted it to any gallery or sold it or anything, he made it to externalize what he felt. Sometimes that's enough. Most important is trying. If you never take the first step, you'll never learn how works best for you. No one can tell you how to create art, they can only give you tools to try. It's up to you to do the rest.
Im 68 and got this on heavy rotation, had tickets to see them in Bham but couldnt go, going to see them in Bristol in the summer....if Im still alive? 😅

On constantly in my car. I'm 50 next week and new music still amazes me.
I'm 54 in July and I love this, and Sleaford Mods. New music is life.
48 here... Same. Warp records... Wasn't surprised to see they're signed by Warp.
Yeah, what is this insanity I keep hearing from "studies" finding that "no one over 33 listens to new music?"
I beg to differ! Good day.
I said GOOD DAY!!
Tomorrow 56, still waiting the next band to warm my heart
Based boomers. I showed my dad squid and it made him so happy for modern music. Of course the mainstream sucks, but there's so many amazing outliers.

The music sounds like Primus meets Echo and the Bunnymen, the vocals sound like Pere Ubu meets Frank Black. Very odd.

Song of the year. An absolute masterpiece.
I still like 2010 more
Fucking loving the whole wave of incredible Post-Punk that "coincidentally" has arisen since Mark E Smith left his corporeal form.
This has vibes from Radiohead's Bodysnatchers. Very vivid musicwriting this is. I love it.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR! THE LADS DID IT!
Second best of the year, wait until Calvacade comes out

Yo
I'm surprised I don't see a lot of people mention pere ubu as a band that probably had some influence on these guys. I've seen a lot of great bands be brought up, but I guess thats just goes to show you how impressive this band is at showing their who they got inspired/influenced by musically. I'm really digging it
Good observation there. Could also add Primus, especially Southbound Pachyderm here: ua-cam.com/video/6xb898sQtu8/v-deo.html
@@ForARide yea I didn't even put that together! It does definitely give me southbound pachyderm vibes, it's got the exact same mood for sure. Haha even the music videos have that similar animation lol
mate, people born after 2000 think everything they hear and see is the first time it’s ever existed. Then forget about it when something new comes out.
Lots of James Chance and the contortions as well. The electronic noise is 100% Pere Ubu inspired, those screaching noises are easy to recognize xd And some Talking Heads, maybe even some Pop Group. Lots of sounds from the funkiest of the new wave.
Get ready --- as the future overtakes us, we'll be in a world that no longer knows your references and never heard of your favorite artists. Everything swirls around the present, where most people are able to recall 5-10 years ago, but the number remembering the 60's, 70's, and 80's is dwindling. Try going to a bar and making a joke about Space Food Sticks. ........crickets.
dude warp records has squid yves tumor oneohtrix point never and danny brown all on the same fucking label.
Pamphlets just became my favourite song off BGF, this is so opportune
I already loved the song but this video makes it even better. Kudos to the animators and all the creative people behind this!
Yes the video is great!!!
Will we be seeing a music video for paddling?
Bright Green Field was a workout on first listen, I was out of breath when this track ended!
This track on record too... you guys nailed the pressing, it sounds incredible!
I mean GSK slaps you right in the face I get it
If you think this is a work out, try listening to Black Midi's "Cavalcade"
@@David_T I have a few times, it’s soooooooo good!
Great for when you're on the treadmill. This or Pixies or I recently did it with Yard Act's record as well, and my aerobic fitness really improved.
What an amazing piece of art. Congratulations to all involved in its creation
This music video really reminds me of "The Unlimited Dream Company" by JG Ballard. I know the band are fans of Ballard because of "GSK" so I'm wondering if it's an intentional reference.
I had never heard of this band, but this is immediately one of my favorite songs/music videos of the year.
Panfletos 💌greetings to all anxious people out there from La Paz, Bolivia.

One of the best records ever made by anyone ever.
Visually very clever and just a great song aurally. this is my new favorite music video of the year so far i would even say.
There is this videogame called No More Hero's
I wanna use this to open up a live action short for it
The drum beat at the very end of the song is the beat from You Made Me Realise by My Bloody Valentine
primus meets radiohead
The fly @5:30ish reminded me of the cover of Miscellaneous Debris, and dislodged a Primus memory I haven’t had since last century. Good job squid 🦑

you guys are my favorite band right now but ads in the *middle* of the vid is a terrible idea
I think this video is about being neurodivergent, and finding a way to be with people through creativity. The apples represent the unique ideas he can access through imagination. Note how he stacks the apples and arranges them in a straight line; these are behaviors associated with autism. In the end, his obsession results in a work that stuns everybody outside.
I discovered this band a week ago and now i can’t let to listen them!! I LOVE so much! All songs are like a trip, a tour for the mind! 😜 Thanks for your music!!
on a 400ug acid trip.....Squid has it, and it has it in spades.

I love the simple singing, it's got that beautiful melancholy.
The production is perfect and the video is gorgeous!

I've just discovered you guys fee months ago on Spotify. And noe I listen every day. Please come visit İstanbul after pandemic. It would be an amazing concert.
been trying to find out for ageds who this band was after hearing on radio 6 , one random click on UA-cam later and finally...
Man this just Screams / Drips with High Functioning Autism / Asperger's Syndrome. As someone who has this, this really Speaks to me. Reminds me of childhood days when I really didn't want to deal with the world. I did a lot of "growing up" & learned to cope / "mask" pretty well, so things aren't as extreme as they used to be, but I can certainly Relate to this song / video. Good Job!
animation is sick wow!!!!!!!! fits the song perfectly
this is the Paranoid Android of this era of rock music. I don’t quite know what that means but it just is.
Hahaha, I feel the same.
The starting of this song is "I might be wrong" all over it
I can't believe I got a fucking ad IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SONG wtf UA-cam
This album is already one of the highlights of 2021. Love this band so much!
This is so visually pleasant
Will never hear the song the same way..
They were excellent at The Fine Line in Minneapolis.
Check out the basement version...
Won't regret it!!!
Late to the party, but this is empowering, even in a shit 2022.
If you grew up with Pere Ubu, then Minutemen, then Pavement and Slint, then Tortoise to name a few.. it's not so difficoult to love this band

Ads on a music video sucks too much!
Hard agree, got totally sucked out of the vibe when the ad started in the middle of the song.

GOD DAMN WHAT A JOURNEY

This sounds soo unique to squid and so glad they created their own sound! However you do hear the jig saw falling into piece and 2+2=5 inspiration ❤️ absolutely loved this album
Ugh it's like if parquet courts and LCD Soundsystem had a baby and then they sent it to a British boarding school.
Parquet Courts sure but I don't see the LCD Soundsystem
I thought the same, LCD Soundsystem's North American Scum meets progressive rock
i'm definitely picking up some allegories and maybe even metaphors from this video
If radiohead and cake had a baby and it was raised by john lydon.....
This shit is genius ❤❤❤
Early 80s Oingo Boingo vibes. Love it.
Oingo Boingo being my favorite band explains why this song got me into Squid!
This video is profound.
