    What is 30 years together, a failure? A tragedy? They chose their paths, which finally took them apart, but that's not a failure. That's their story, and that's their business.

      I agree; 30 years of choosing to stay together can be many things, but failure ain't one of'em. Emotional Hostage Situations, not included. They can appear to be consensual but dig deeper and there's usually an anchor that both may not even be aware of; perhaps that's because very few parents have mature, adult conversations with their kids about what "Love" means to them and what they value in a relationship, and manage to do so without pushing their agendas along with their views.
      I was fortunate to know them professionally, and I think "dull moments" were rare when they were together. Triple AAA Celebrity status without any of the high maintenance most expect.

    I found this very sad, I remember the chemistry, oh they were so crazy for each other, she was gorgeous and he had a mystery about him, they seemed the perfect match, she stayed 30 yrs and he kept coming back. I think they still loved each other to the end, they just couldn't be without each other but had to for her sanity as he had this deep failure within him.

    I followed Shepard for years and read many of his books and plays. I even have a signed first edition of Hawk Moon by him. The Motel Chronicles was another good book by him. He was abused by his father. An interesting yet complex relationship and lives. I've read Johnny Dark's book on Shepard whose own father was also an alcoholic., so it's epigenetic, meaning it gets passed on from one generation to the next. Also in the Bible, "The sins of the father are visited upon the son". Read also that Jessica broke her collar bone and arm after falling down the stairs. Not attibuted to Shepard's drinking? A couple of other things that Shepard mentioned was that "men lie", so he may have been lying about that incident which has been covereed up in the media and that "the great American tragedy is that families fall apart", which we see all the time, not just in Hollywood, either. After my 42 year marriage ended in widowhood, I can relate to some of this. Not trying to stereotype, but it's a known fact that a great many actors/writers have been and are alcoholics if one knows the great Irish writers/actors as well as American ones and others from other ethnic backgrounds! Shepard also stated he couldn't live anywhere east of the Hudson River, so after they moved to NYC, he probably felt out of place and then bought a horse farm in Kentucky. Lange also stated that when they broke up it felt like a divorce so it doesn't matter whether there's a legal paper involved of not, feelings are feelings. I love what the French Parisian women say that learn this from their mother's knee from the time they're little girls, "It never ends well"! You either break up after an affair, go through a divorce after getting married or end up a widow or widower, so enjoy it while it lasts if you can! They're very pragmatic about love relationships which most of their French films are about! Experts on the topic! Lange probably has had her own co-dependent traits as well! Their personalities attracted each other i.e. their passion, but it was hard to hold that relationship together along with their other personality traits, "for better or worse"! I'm sure she also felt like a widow when her beloved Sam passed away from Lou Gehrig disease, ALS! May he rest in peace.

      @@brianwalsh1401 You are so right. No one can have a healthy relationship with someone who is UNhealthy. However, I don't agree with you on how addicts become addicts. I know one who became an addict due to mental health issues as well as traumas. When they become clean, that is when the mental health issues are discovered...as well as the traumas & other unhealthy behaviors. This will never change as the sick parent will create trauma or not address trauma/mental health issues when it occurs passing on the generational behaviors. Alcoholism is a coping mechanism for not necessarily a physical addiction.

I think most addictions develop in childhood from not having your needs met and or abuse of some sort. Dysfunction is passed down from generation to generation.
      I think there are other ways, like you mention, that addiction can occur but I think most are caused by having a hole in your soul that we try and fill up with addictions that will never do it. We have to work on our issues and unresolved pain.

    I loved Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard. Jessica is a great actress and Sam was a very talented writer. I think Hollywood and stardom really messed with his soul. When I was a young teenager I dreamed of finding a man like SS and being madly in love like I imagined them to be. When I found out they split up I was sad for them. I found the love of my life and have that crazy wild passionate love. We are still together 30 yrs later and still crazy about each other. Wished they would have made it to the end. From what I have read she didn’t go see him when he was bedridden at the end. And he was with some young girl right before he was sick. I think people need to cut him a break. He was a proud dude and knew what was to come with the illness. I think that is why he started drinking heavily again. Rest In Peace Sam 🙏. And I hope everyone finds passion in their lives and that one great love ❤️

That often happens when a man leaves his family for another woman, he realizes she wasn't worth it but he can't go back either. Shepherd didn't "stay with Lange", he left her as offend as possible and I doubt he slept alone all of those nights away either. Actors and the romantic stories they make up about themselves.

      As for homewrecking: he was the one who was responsible for his own marriage, not her. I don't understand why the woman is always blamed when it takes 2 to have an affair and he chose to leave his wife for her. He did propose to her, he said so, which means he did in fact want to marry her. She's the one who didn't want to get married. She wanted to stay with him but didn't feel the need for an actual marriage. And even after they broke up, he stated very explicitly that, while he felt bad about leaving his wife for her, that it was 100% worth it (because of course it was-- have you seen Jessica Lange? Watched her? She's mesmerizing). The fact is they did stay together for 30 years. They probably both had affairs, who knows (they do both have a history of it), and I'm sure there was some toxicity: but they kept coming back to each other. He even wrote about how they couldn't live without each other (not sure that's healthy, but it is what he said). Their relationship was a muse for a lot of his writing, which should tell you plenty. You can see that by the way they looked at each other, even right up until the end of their relationship, that they were very much in love. Both have implied that had his drinking not been so much of an issue, they probably would have stayed together until he died.
      So yeah, definitely not the healthiest relationship: but the way you characterize it comes off oversimplified and a tad misogynistic.

    • @paulascott5701
      @paulascott5701 2 роки тому +1

      @@valerirutland2468 The woman is blamed because men are weaker to sexual temptation and flattery than women are, men have a much stronger sex drive that these home wreckers take advantage of and the fact is that every marriage will have very low points. Women who stand in the in the wings, waiting to sweep in and take advantage of that inevitable situation are, in the kindest description possible, criminals. Men shouldn't have these weaknesses but they do and everybody knows it. People who exploit it are lowlifes and it always backfires eventually. I'm pretty old and I've never seen a case where it didn't backfire on the home wrecker spectacularly, though they may swear they don't regret a thing and are happy....it's a lie.

    • @valerirutland2468
      @valerirutland2468 2 роки тому

      @@paulascott5701 men do not have a stronger sex drive, they are just socially conditioned to be more comfortable with their sexuality. This has been scientifically proven. Women are sexual too (especially the one in question) and that's why they too are susceptible to affairs-- it's very rarely some grand scheme to steal someone's man just because. She was with Mikhail Baryshnikov at the time, one of the most desired men in the world. She didn't need another woman's man. It just happened, passion got the best of them. According to her, she never intended on staying with him: it was gonna just be an affair, but they fell in love. Jessica was not the first affair Sam had had on his wife, he had been cheating on her since long before he met Jessica. But she is the only one he CHOSE to leave his wife for.
      They must've really seen something in each other to stay together for nearly 30 years. Again, it wasn't some perfect fairytale but to slut shame a woman and give the man a pass, and then act like she's just trash and deserved to be treated as such by the man who CHOSE, AND CONTINUED TO CHOOSE OVER THE YEARS to be with her, is beyond sexist and gross. This is the same kind of narrative that perpetuates rape culture. Even if a woman gets assaulted, all of a sudden it's her fault because, "Oh you shouldn't have worn that skirt, you know men just can't control their sex drive." It's a load of bullshit.
      I'm wondering if you even watched the video. If you had, I wouldn't be having to tell you that 1. He wanted to marry her, 2. He said even after the breakup that being with her all those years was worth it, and 3. That she said it didn't start with the intention of them running off together.

      @@paulascott5701 A relationship or marriage does not mean that the partner becomes our possession. Whether people remain faithful to each other is a matter of will, willingness to sacrifice their fantasies, and libido for the sake of bonding with another person. Marriage is just a symbolic ritual with no guarantees, no binding contract. When it comes to betrayal, the role or behavior of the temptress doesn't really matter. Because women anyway, consciously or unconsciously, will always compete with each other for the attention and desire of men, and there is no ethics here.
