    Our first car, an Austin A35, was not fitted with any heater. Back in the 1960s, I fitted a little electric heater bar to demist the windscreen. It was never intended to heat the car interior . We just wore coats, scarves and gloves!

      Thankfully I’ve managed to repair the heater but it was definitely looking like this was the way to go!

    On your dead heater...has it got OEM door mirrors fitted? There is a temperature probe under one of the mirrors. On those vans, the heater will only work if the temperature is below (from memory) 10 degrees C. To test heaters before, I've had to put an ice cube on the sensor to force the heater to kick in. Maybe if the mirrors have been replaced (common on vans) with cheapie mirrors, the sensor has gone, or not been connected.
    But as you say, it could well be the HV fuse.

    • @ModernHeroes
      @ModernHeroes  3 роки тому

      Interesting. Is it on the NS mirror? I think they’re OE but there’s a big chunk of the casing missing on the NS 🤔

    Thanks for the update. I think as more full electric vans hit the roads in the UK the MOT exemption loophole will be closed. Also, if accidents due to unsafe exempt EV vans increase, insurance companies will greatly inflate premiums and possibly call on the government to make MOTs on these vehicles compulsory.

    • @ModernHeroes

      Already has been closed - anything registered after 1 March 2015 needs a MoT as usual. Guess they saw it coming!

    I have a 2014 Kangoo ZE LL21, bought at BCA Glasgow through Jonathan Porterfield at Eco cars Feb 2020. I haven't used public charges yet with the Kangoo but when I had a Zoe, it was okay on the Podpoint 22kw AC only chargers but I could never get it to charge on the Podpoint Rapid charger at my local Lidl, that also has CCS and CHadeMO. I was rather shocked when the ZE arrived as I opened the fuel flap and it said diesel!! I then found out it had a diesel heater fitted at the factory! But this was not mentioned on the auction details. The diesel heater is in addition to the standard heater and I haven't bothered trying it, as like you I'm trying to avoid burning stuff. A nice upgrade I've made which is useful in a work van, is I have managed to fit a Kenwood DMX7018DABS radio in the space on top of the dash. It gives you a 7" touchscreen, handsfree phone connection, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and has Waze satnav built in. You can also plug a reverse camera into the unit. And by fitting the right adaptor loom, I have retained the Renault remote controls. I look forward to seeing what else you get up to. I haven't MOT'd my van either as it gets regular checks on tyres, brakes, suspension etc

    • @ModernHeroes
      @ModernHeroes  3 роки тому +1

      That sounds pretty good, adding a unit with a screen to the weird empty bit on top of the dash. My van definitely doesn’t have the diesel heater - there’s just a massive blanking plate under the fuel filler flap 😂

    • @dougowt
      @dougowt 3 роки тому +1

      @@ModernHeroes the unit fits because it doesn't have a CD player so its quite a short unit, it is nicely shaded by the dash. The hardest part was making up a surround, as I couldn't find anything from all the audio guys. (A great job for someone with a scanner and 3D printer). And you just get a single DIN pocket to fill the hole left by the standard radio.

    Really dont like the fact of any vehicle electric or fuel powered being exempt from an mot. That will lead to potentially loads of unsafe vehicles on the road especially ones who dont see the inside of a workshop due to a diyer who could still miss or ignore potentially dangerous issues. All vehicles need yearly mot's until their date with the crusher.

    • @ModernHeroes
      @ModernHeroes  3 роки тому

      I don’t think it’s the crisis you’re making it out to be - there aren’t that many qualifying vehicles on the road to start with. Plenty more that scrape through a MOT every year but that are in truly horrifying condition.

  • @chrisstleger9181
    @chrisstleger9181 3 роки тому +1

    As with milk floats, you may not need an MOT but the vehicle needs to be roadworthy for insurance purposes and to be legally on the road. So having an MOT test would help to confirm this.

    • @ModernHeroes
      @ModernHeroes  3 роки тому

      It’s only going to be an issue with insurance if an accident is caused by something that would make it not roadworthy - a car that scrapes through a MOT but has a terminal failure some time later would be treated exactly the same.

    • @stevenmoran4060
      @stevenmoran4060 3 роки тому

      Only a fool would believe electric cars won’t need MOT, the more there are on the road then the rules will change.
      Just like the grant for new electric car suddenly went down.
      If the use of petrol and diesel goes down too far the loss of duty will magically make electric bills far more expensive.
      One thing the government won’t miss out on is the income from vat on fuel, that loss will have to come from somewhere else.

      Definitely thinking about giving it a go out of curiosity more than anything. I’ve never had any issues with the PodPoint app, just for some reason with this van it stops supplying power after a certain amount of time! Really odd.

    If more ev vans hit the road guaranteed you will be paying for mot's and road usage better known as road tax the government will and have to charge to recoup billions of lost revenue on ice vehicles as more take up ev's also current battery technology is old hat and new technologies need to come they will be very expensive to replace after warranty basically ev's will be throwaway vehicles so not really environmentally friendly

    • @ModernHeroes
      @ModernHeroes  3 роки тому

      Why do people crow on about increased taxation? It’s currently far more expensive to use an ICE vehicle, right now, today. That isn’t going to change - any rise in cost that affects EVs will also apply to ICE.
      This van is very unlikely to require a MOT in the future - it is exempt!
