I’m English so I cannot really relate to it, but from what I can tell: people in USA have to file their own taxes, and it is a task virtually everyone struggles with since it is not taught how to be done in schools and because the process is a lot of maths/documentation of every little expense (people who don’t have a head for numbers may struggle because of this). I think it is also a stress factor since not filing taxes is a felony which can result in prison time, so it can feel like a “do-or-die” situation a lot of the time.
Scout: First time filing Taxes (It isn't taught in school), and he has no idea how to handle it himself. Soldier: Has been Evading Taxes for years and it has caught up to him. Pyro: Cannot remember the name of the company he ran, and now has to pay those company taxes. Demoman: has been grilled by his Momma about his taxes... And he's been sober for too long. Engineer: Is filing his Income Taxes and has found out several of his deliveries were intercepted, with the sentries being stolen. Medic: Has to deal with his income taxes and his buying of highly expensive exotic animal parts having been found out by the government. Sniper: Found out his last few taxes never made it to the IRS, and may have been stolen by the postal service, so now he has to file those taxes manually. (Sniper's Van has a windshield sticker that says: "Tax is in the Mail".) Spy: His multiple false identities have caught up to him, not helped by his highly expensive tastes.
