This is an excellent breakdown! 2 Points!
I've used ticktick in the past and dropped it because I found myself not using it as much at the time. Now I'm feeling the itch of a task manager and ticktick seems to be the best for me, though I do like the more transparancy that todoist has but I like ticktick's feature set. Specifically curious to see if ticktick can also replace habitory.

Great job, Lucas! I also compared the two apps, though not as in-depth as you did. What sealed the deal for me was TickTick's impressive calendar interface. I'm baffled as to why Todoist hasn't incorporated a comprehensive calendar, given that's how many of us plan and organize daily tasks. You made a valid point about TickTick's privacy concerns and its origins in China. If it's not transparent, it likely stems from China. If Todoist introduces a good calendar feature, I'll immediately make the switch.

Superb comparison and the right result. I am a paid user of both apps for more than 4 years and keep switching back and forth when I get bored. Tick tick had responded to all my queries till date though a few replies were delayed. I prefer tick tick due to their pomodoro functionality, both start and end date availability, time estimation, check lists and better outlook integration which captures details under description. Even the sorting in tick tick as groups gives a better interface. Tick tick also has a plan your day feature which can be run multiple times a day. But if you are using a free version of the apps, todoist gives you more options now than tick tick which was not the case earlier. I also like the Karma feature in todoist compared to tick tick statistics. Language processing is also better in todoist and the interface and ease of use for todoist mobile apps are better whereas I like the desktop interface of tick tick. If you have similar subtasks under different tasks, which is very common, in todoist, you would go nuts in the Day views. Todoist have addins even for the mobile outlook app.

One of things I prefer about Todoist's Quick Add feature is that regardless of what context you're in when you hit 'Q' to add something, it always starts with just putting it in the Inbox UNLESS you provide additional attributes like a list, tag or date. TickTick will look at the list or filter you're currently in and add certain attributes based on your current context when you hit Tab+N. Sometimes I'll be in a particular list or filter and think of some task to add that is completely unrelated to the context I'm in, so I'll have to remove the tag or change the list or remove the day. Or I have to do "GI" to switch me to Inbox and then Tab+N. So I prefer Todoist's approach there!

Yeah, same thing happened to me. The limits are just stupid and lame.

First time I've see a reviewer looking at the company that is offering the app. That can be a very important issue for some people - it surprises me at times how some people will jump on the newest app (especial those dealing with financial and other sensitive information) without considering the company values. Thanks for including that in this excellent comparison.

This is the best side-by-side app review I've ever watched, now an eager subscriber. I was able to make a clear decision on which one to go with. I'm back and forth between iPhone/Windows so the widgets and note taking were Ws for TT, and was going to look for a separate Pomodoro which I really need w/ A.D.D., another W for TT, I used nested so W for TD, but also have massive amounts of subtasks w varying available time and urgencies which was probably the knockout blow to go with TickTick.

Great review! Learned a few things. I do disagree on the filtering part of the review. Although, TickTick does have a very helpful UI around creating the desired filters, the filters that can be constructed are limited in some significant ways compared to Todoist. For example, Todoist allows me to create a filter that includes dated tasks for the week for a given list (Project), but that same filter can also show me tasks with priority 1 or 2 AND no date. It seems in TickTick once you've used a particular type of attribute in the filter you cannot use it in another part of the filter. In the above example, I'm using date in the first section of the filter to say give me this weeks tasks and then in a separate section of the same filter I'm saying priority 1 and 2 AND no date. This is extremely useful in a variety of cases.
Also, I love the fact that you can build up filters in Todoist with separate sections just by separating the search terms by commas. This is something you cannot do TickTick.

Thank you for the professional analysis. For me, TickTick has a couple of powerful features which beats Todoist: habits tracker, Asenhouer Matricks, notes, etc.
But, as you reasonably mentioned, Todoist has a rich history. And most importantly - values and culture.
For me is highly risky to trust all my personal and professional project management systems to guys who may suddenly disappear from the radars.
But with your video, everyone has an excellent opportunity to choose )
    Upd
After some surveys, I found that Tick Tick is a USA company launched in 2013. Annually their development staff released major updates. Now it's a 6th version of the App. TickTick actively publishing news in Twitter.

Incredible such an in depth comparison, thanks a lot! Have been using both for about a year each, but I will go back to TickTick. The task description of Todoist just plain sucks. If I want a picture added I have to make a comment which just doesn't make sense to me.
I do have to disagree with you about the theming. Todoist for me has one of the most boring themes. There is just 1 dark mode and it looks very gray and sad. On the other hand TickTick has some colorfull themes which looks way more attractive to me.

Leaving here my two cents: after commenting this I decided to go with tick tick because it's cheaper, but I miss a few things from todoist:
      - It's natural language processing is snappier. When I type something like "tomorrow" on a task on ticktick it feels like it takes a while to process it, while todoist feels like it goes instantly
      - It works with multiple languages (in ticktick I need to type stuff like "tomorrow" or "in three days" in English even if I'm typing my tasks in portuguese)

  • @DiegoRevilla1605
    @DiegoRevilla1605 Рік тому

i like that you focus on GTD method

  • @arahadiy
    @arahadiy Рік тому

Another thing to add is seems like the natural language processing of Todoist a way better than TickTick. For example you can easily just type out "tom" and it will become tomorrow, type out "fri" and it will become Friday. Type out any time format (12h or 24h format) and will add timed deadline.
For TickTick I remember correctly you need to type out "today", "tomorrow" in complete format for it to be able to recognize what you mean. And if I'm not mistaken, sometimes TickTick also can't recognize when I type out these words. This means Todoist will be faster if you need to capture tasks ASAP especially on mobile app.

  • @soyarturoayala

Excellent comparison Lucas. TickTick hands down a few points better than Todoist and I've been using it for it.
I love Ticktick's integrated calendar feature, "popup" reminders on mobile and the option to create extensive notes, but it is very true that the support service is very poor and slow. Just yesterday I had a problem and I will wait for them to answer during the week.
In addition to the above, the issue of "who is behind" is very important and even more so in these times of invasion of privacy, so this aspect is another vital aspect to take into account.
So based on what you've shared, I would "sacrifice" my TickTick preference and continue with Todoist.
Thank you very much for the information and the work you did. A hug.

    Todoist for me

  • @zhuraitsuki
    @zhuraitsuki 2 роки тому +1

The two things I like most for ticktick for my routine/setup, that made me swap over to using ticktick only (and I've tried todoist and bounced around multiple times) are:
    - Timezones
    - Pinned Tasks
most notably, Todoist is very weak at timezones (since pinned tasks was something more recently implemented, though needs some improvement but "works")
ticktick letting every task have it's own timezone and also converting it into yours (and knowing when that timezone has DST or not) is actually quite strong (this goes for both timezones, since the US does DST timeshift at one time, whereas other countries do their DST timeshift at another time)
and in a global world where someone may be associating with someone remotely in another timezone on a repeat basis (or if you're using part of your todo list for game tracking that may be based in another timezone, if you for example wanted to track events in something)
... Then in that context, todoist's timezone function is actually very lacking since you can only pin it to a current local time, not to mention that I can write into ticktick a specific time in that timezone and not have to manually do the timezone conversions, and ticktick would do that for me.
    ----
re: support, I have gotten responses actually quite quickly but I'm on premium (e.g. today I sent in a feedback and got a response in less than an hour, and earlier than that I had 2 day response), that said they haven't really implemented the stuff I recommended except for some simple stuff (I honestly don't really ask for technical help right now)
premium support in the past for todoist: they didn't respond for a very long time
and more recently, honestly they seems dismissive of the things I was asking about, or didn't even read my whole message entirely and assumed I was saying I liked what they did, when it was the utter opposite.
Also their integration with google calendar can be weird.... gcal -> todoist integration has a weird quirk where todoist doesn't actually follow whatever you showed in gcal (e.g. daily until 8/19), which can be okay if you use one or the other, but is very weird if you were to use both (gcal and todoist handle "daily until 3/30" end date a bit differently) - I asked them in support, but ended up not changing it because they thought their implementation of the logic made more sense, but then that's not exactly an integration is it...?) but whatever... the entire reason I was using the google calendar integration in the first place was because google calendar handles timezones and todoist did not

My biggest concern is the transparency these companies have, Neither of them supports client side encryption, which makes the user data visible to the product vendor. In this aspect as you mentioned ToDoist seems better than TickTick, which I also felt in my little research. I liked TickTick, but recently switched due to the privacy concerns. We are sharing a fair part of our life with sensitive information, and the value of this information is much higher than what you post on social media.

Neither app supports start dates which renders them both useless

TickTick supports start dates through its "Duration" feature.
Todoist does not support start dates natively but there is a workaround explained here: ua-cam.com/video/rKuCZl6ilwE/v-deo.html

At 17:34, did you mean to say, "from," instead of "to?" You say, "skeptical about making the move TO Todoist despite the superior feature set." I think you meant to say, "skeptical about making the move FROM Todoist...."

Yeah I meant to say FROM Todoist 😅

Great comparison! I was trying to decide between these two and this video was extremely helpful.
One thing that the video didn't touch on is that Tick Tick offers reminder notifications for free users, while Todoist only offers them for premium users. Just wanted to note that in case it helps anyone out.
However, after testing both apps for a day I found Todoist more user-friendly and I trust the company behind it more. I'm going to go with Todoist for now!

Great video. I’m using Tick Tick for more than a year now. Also, you’re my crush. Haha

For me Tick Tick was the obvious choice because it's cheaper and has a student discount which Todoist does not have anymore.

It's funny because I experienced a very fast support from tick tick and and very slow one from todoist. And every time I report a bug to todoist, they told me it's a feature. But I agree that it is much reassuring to trust a company like todoist. However, I never store information that can compromise my life in these applications. Same thing for Evernote. I would save sensitive information in my google drive and add a link from tick tick or Todoist or Evernote to this link.
