    I recommend putting them as high up as possible and then tilting them down. Perhaps try getting some wall mounts. This can let you track most of the room including the floor. I got a greenscreen a few years back, and I used the things that held that in place almost as tripods for the sensors. Although you could just use a tripod. I also have a third sensor in one of the corners just to make sure I don't have many blind spots.

      @cooleobrad  7 років тому +1

      +TheCaptainBaker - TCS Yeah wall mounts or mounting the sensors to the ceiling upside down would definitely provide the perfect coverage, and I may end up doing that some day. For now my tracking is very good, especially with all the software updates Oculus has released.

      If you’re using 3 sensors, don’t just place them all up high. Test with various heights and try two mounted high and one mounted lower, that way you can bend over without losing tracking.

    • @fahimay8799
      @fahimay8799 6 років тому

      Use selfie sticks there cheap and easily extendable for height and if u buy the monopod one it has a hole at the bottoms which attaches easily to the sensor base

      Are there any screweless options? I have a pretty small play space so having 2 of them high would help. But unfortunately the wallpaper I have is not available anywhere on aerth anymore so I don't want to destroy it

      Tenho Andersson amazon sells mounts that come with 3m tape. Supposedly the adhesive they use is safe to put on walls.

    Old video sure but for anyone who just bought an Oculus Rift (like me) I wouldn't put your room boundaries "guardian system" close to walls or over desks and other furniture. Give yourself plenty of room to punch or reach through it and just remember you can't see so reaching down for something or to reach up you can smash your hand/controller on a table or desk. Give yourself some extra space to pass through the grid that comes up. I personally turned mine off because I bought floor mats and kept the grid to that size so i knew when i stepped off I was "going out of bounds". Just my personal two cents.

    I'm cursing my Rift at the moment. Despite a new computer, all of the recommended configurations for cables/extenders, sensor placement (x4 sensors), my rift's audio cuts out constantly, the apps crash constantly, the sensors lose tracking. I spend all of my time troubleshooting and never actually using the Rift. *sigh* Lucky you for getting everything up and running smoothly..

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому

      Sounds like you may be pushing your PC too hard with too many USB 3.0 inputs. Have you tried a PCI-e card with extra USB ports to reduce the bandwidth going through your motherboard (I've linked a couple in the description)? Also make sure 2 of the 4 sensors and are on USB 2.0, try putting the Rift's USB cable into a USB 2.0 slot as well. I recommend asking Oculus support directly or reddit.com/r/oculus for any troubleshooting advice.

    • @Jontiac
      @Jontiac 6 років тому

      CooleoBrad These all sound like really great tips worth trying! I ordered a inatech pci-e card from amazon and am just waiting on it. I’ll try the USB 2.0 ports as well as you said (although it’s advice I find odd considering how everyone speaks of the bandwidth demands of the sensors). Thanks for the reply!

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому +1

      Oculus themselves says its best for your 3rd and 4th sensors to be on USB 2.0, but it definitely does sound counter-intuitive at first - www.oculus.com/blog/oculus-roomscale-balancing-bandwidth-on-usb/

      Update: Fixed my problem; I sent my AM4 system back and bought a 8700k system. No more problems. One minor glitch I did experience was choppy audio, so I i switched out my 3.0 active USB extender for a 2.0 active extender and now everything runs smoothly and sounds smoothly! I don't blame AM4 about before, I blame the particular limiting asus strix board I happened to have been using.

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  7 років тому

      It's very good, but for me it was worth it to get a third sensor. If you mount your sensors on your ceiling and angle the camera down that way, I hear you get much better coverage than placing them the right way up.

    what is a sensor for VR?

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  7 років тому

      So the Oculus Rift comes with an infrared-camera which tracks the headset's position in space, then sends that info to the computer and adjusts what the player is seeing based on that. So for example when I lean forward with the headset on, the sensor sees the (invisible to the naked eye) infrared LEDs(lights) on my headset change position and as they change so does my view inside the game. I think PSVR uses the same system, and Vive's is a bit different, however they all accomplish the same goal -- tracking the player's head and hand controllers.
      Hope this helps, but if you are still confused reply back and I'll try to provide a better explanation!

    Couple things I forgot to mention:
    1.) You can use USB 2.0 cable extenders, however you will not get as high quality tracking experience so I think it is worth it to just go for a USB 3.0.
    2.) The Rift's cables itself gives you a pretty decent amount of room to walk with and a 10ft hdmi extender & 10ft USB 3.0 extender is probably overkill for most people. I have provided extra links in the description for smaller compatible cable extenders.
    Other than that, enjoy! And subscribe for more VR content []-)

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  7 років тому +2

      3.) If you are using 3 sensors Oculus recommends using a USB 2.0 port for the third sensor so your motherboard is not overloaded. Apparently 3 active sensors on 3 USB 3.0 ports can actually cause tracking tracking issues. I'll try to do some of my own testing when my third sensor comes in and let you know if it makes a big difference or not!

      People are quick to forget the rapid progress that has been made in VR/AR/XR. It was only 10 years ago that the Oculus DK1 launched and reignited people's interest in the space. Just 10 years ago the state of the art headset was a non-HD, 60Hz, 3-DOF tracking, no tracked controllers, no hand tracking, tethered to a PC, terrible ergonomics, no passthrough, no guardian system, no ASW, no AST, no eye-tracking, no IPD adjustment, no prescription lens support, no pancake lenses device from a random startup on Kickstarter. Can't wait to see where things are in another 6+ years!

    could you make your oculus home imitate your room? I mean make it the same size as your real room and if you have obstacles like a table in one corner you could place a table in same place in oculus home, that way your obstacles in your real room become an asset in your oculus home.

      Often times when I use rift some apps won't shut and I have to switch back to my projector to restart oculus client.
      I'd like to know if there is a way to assign a mouse key button to do oculus client restart (my mouse is Logitech Performance Mouse MX)? That way I could do a restart without leaving OR.?

    A big problem with only using two sensors for 360 tracking is that you tend to get massive amounts of jitter, as you can see in this video if you watch his in-game hands. I mean, that's really really bad jitter. That would drive me nuts. Three sensors fixes it completely. Tracking is rock solid and stable. If you're doing 360 roomscale, you already spent $400. Spend another $60 and do it right IMO.
    I guess it's a moot point now that you can't buy the Rift CV1 anymore, but for anyone still using it... (I am! Index almost convinced me to upgrade, but not quite)

    a point about DVI adapters - some are only rated for 1920x1200 at 60hz which provides too little bandwidth for the Rift's requirements.
    so generally a 4k-ready dvi-d adapter would be expected to work better
    also some dvi male adapters are only single-channel which won't have enough bandwidth - or they are split digital and analogue so half of a dual channel would go to either analogue or digital. So it seems getting a DVI digital-only adapter would be another best bet for getting the rift running through dvi.
    in saying that- some people have claimed the regular dvi adapters work fine and some 4k ones haven't worked for some people so it seems like a tossup whichever way you go.
    with extenders it seems to depend a lot on the individual graphics card and how much power the manufactuter decided to route to each of the display ports.
    in any case my regular hdmi port on my gtx970 is busted, and I need the displayport for a 1440p g-sync monitor. So I'm going to have to get it working on the DVI ports.
    I've ordered a handful of adapters, and will be testing all of them.

I should note though, that the Rift's cables itself gives you a pretty decent amount of room to walk with and a 10ft hdmi extender & 10ft USB 3.0 extender is probably overkill for most people. The amount of quality free content Oculus releases/funds paired with great built in audio and amazing hand controllers makes it worth it for me though.

No bullshit, I had to spend over half an hour the other day just trying to find the exact spot in my room where it would recognize the controller enough to continue. Is the roomscale for rift comparable to the vive?

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому

      Just as good as Vive roomscale, but depending on your room's size you may need 3 or 4 total sensors. 2 sensors works for most people's setups however.

      2 sensors is fine for most people. No harm in trying that first and then upgrading to 3 sensors later if you feel you need it.

    Yeah... The problem with your recommendation of cables for this setup on my end is that I have a lack of USB 3 and HDMI ports... I have 1 USB 3 port, and 1 HDMI port. Bad news for someone who just received their Rift and wants to play with it right away. So, I went to Amazon and ordered a 4-Port USB 3 hub and an HDMI splitter which gives me two HDMI ports now.

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  7 років тому

      I hope your USB 3.0 hub connects directly through your motherboard and not your single USB 3.0 port because otherwise you are just going to be splitting the bandwidth between all 4 which is going to cause a lot of latency and unwanted issues. Same thing for the HDMI splitter, but I'm not sure what made you think you need 2 HDMI ports in this video. I only have one on my graphics card. There is a link to some USB 3.0 cards that connect via PCI in the description.

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  7 років тому

      There are adapters to convert hdmi to DVI or Displayport which I mention in this video and link in the description which you could use to run both your monitor and Rift, but no you don't need to connect a traditional monitor to run the Rift as long as you have Oculus Home installed as far as I'm aware.

    why do we need all these cables? don't they come with the sensors?

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  7 років тому

      The sensors included in the Rift and Touch box are standard Oculus sensors with a 6 ft cable. The headset itself comes with no extenders (but those cords are ~13ft), and the sensors come with no extenders. Only if you order a third sensor do they send you a USB 2.0 16ft extension. (They recommend one sensor on USB 2.0 and the other 2 on USB 3.0, when connecting 3 sensors).

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  7 років тому

      This video uses only 2 sensors lol. Setting up roomscale is going to be a bit more involved (as seen in the video with the cable extenders and such)for the Oculus Rift, but I prefer Oculus's hand controllers and exclusive & free games compared to the Vive. They are both excellent products though, you can not go wrong with either one.

      Valve does have some new prototype controllers similar to/possibly more advanced than Touch that look really cool. You can just google "valve vr controller prototype" to find more info on them. And like I mentioned to the commenter above, it is a pain to initially set up this roomscale system and I really wish Rift had used a lighthouse based system, but for me it was worth it. Oculus Touch is really immersive for hand presence, and also there is a crazy amount of great free games Oculus gives to people for just buying Rift + Touch. Thanks for the comment!

    Do you need the hdmi extension cord if you have a 15 ft hdmi cable

    • @cooleobrad
      @cooleobrad  6 років тому

      I'm a bit confused by your question. The Rift comes with a ~13ft HDMI cable which cannot be removed from the headset(easily anyway), in order to make it any longer you would need to plug that cable into an HDMI extension. Whether you need an extension or not would be dependent on how much play space you have. You should be able to test if you need longer cables or not by moving your headset around your play area and by seeing if the headset cable is becoming taut or tangled.
