If done properly this could become an awesome game… Imagine fully destructible environments and you can be either the monster , the army defending the city or a survivor trying to escape the disaster.
That would be an awesome idea! Kind of like that old Reign of Fire game they had. Where each the humans and the monsters had their own campaign that takes place on each side of the conflict. Players could change the ending based on in game extra tasks (kill X number of enemies, destroy Y object, rescue Z character)

There was a PS2 game called War of the Monsters which is basically exactly what you wanted. Obviously it was limited by the technology of the time but that game still holds up and is fun as hell to play even today. It'd be cool to see that game remade with today's tech.
