My daughter and I just completed a build. Our first engine. We had your video up for every step of the build! Thank you, thank you, thank you! Your time is so appreciated and she loved your comments through the build.
As a note, I will say that I wish you had a video on how to wire up this thing. My daughter and I have only a vague idea of how that is supposed to work. We have an on-off switch, a push button switch, an indicator light, some wirey things that attach from batteries to a glow plug. That is about it. I kinda get an idea that we should be cutting and soldering stuff. We will figure it out eventually, but a wire diagram from the vendor with the switches, etc, would have been awesome. A video from you even better!
Dennis I first want to say what I am about to say to you is no smoke if you know what I mean. To me this is the best if not the best video you have made. You say this video might be boring to the advance guys and you mention some little mistake you made. Well, a little refresher on the tips you give never really hurts all of us advance guys and as far as your little mistakes no big deal. Think you are putting this engine together and concentrating on that, also to make sure we do not miss an important step that's not in the instructions plus keeping it true to the value of why you do these videos for us and that is to shear the knowledge you bring to the table of these engines. Tell me who can juggle all that at the same time while making a video. You Dennis that's who. Now on to the meat of my opinion and content of this video. You might want to read this when you have some extra time and a large drink of your favorite beverage. First, I would highly recommend to anyone who has never put one of these engines or one like it together to copy the full instructions that you went thru on this video ( i know its many pages 46 but well worth it) plus watch your video and go thru each page and write down all the tips and info you put out per page. I can bet you they will have a better build and less questions for TOYAN Plus a reference for future builds. Your mentioning of the direction of which way the seals face is a key point for the photos are not too clear about that. As far as the piston rings go and being match to their corresponding cylinder liner, I wish I had read that in the instructions first before inventorying my parts. For I could not find them at first and when i did i pulled them out of their corresponding liner and not thinking about the gap. Speaking of that I inspected them first then took both of them an reinstalled them back in the liner. I did not see a gap in either one of them. So I swapped them between cylinder liners and still no gap. Any thoughts on that or recommendations? I have not run the engine, but it is all together plus not much feal of compression. I would like talk about at this time of the assembling of the rocker arms and installation of the valve caps you did in the video. I noticed you suggested filling the valve caps full of grease I liked that Idea and the good reasoning behind that. You pointed out in the video after filling one of the valve caps with grease and installing it one of the valves was hard to open due to a little extra grease in the valve cap. Let me share with you what happen to me in that same area. I lap my valves in all of my engines before running them in thanks to JOHNNY Q. So, I proceeded to do that with this new OTTO engine I removed the keepers, retainers, and valve springs. Went to push the first valve out and it was stuck so I squirted a little oil on it and tried to rotate it with my finger no luck. So, I lightly tap on it and try to rotate it at the same time it finally came out. Went to put it back in after cleaning it a checking for any damage to it and it only went in about a quarter of the way. I rotated the valve to enter the valve guide at several different locations and still only achieve part of the way down the valve guide. Long long story short polished the valve and guide and now it works smoothly. Note two out of the four valves were like the first one I took out. I would suggest before putting in rocker arms and valve caps to check the opening and closing of the valves with your finger after adding a little oil. What is your thoughts Dennis on running 30% nitro in this engine as TOYAN mention? Is that what you run in your other 200 series engines? Something else Toyan did not mention in the instructions to these first- time builders of this engine is what percent of oil to mix with the nitro. What would you suggest to these first-time users? Well Dennis after all is said so far it looks like this OTTO will be a good one. I like the adjustment you can make on the timing belt tensioner, the single carb with the pump, the option of using the new style starter or old style like on the other 200 series engines. the size of the engine and the better location of the glo plugs in relationship to the cylinder liner. Cons of the engine, I wish TOYAN would put better bearings on the fan shaft and idler pully for these 200 series engines I have had several failures of these bearings on my other 200 engines plus trying to figure out at first which # code stands for what bearing and what engine it apples to. TOYAN needs to make a complete parts list with part numbers for each one of their engines they make plus have them in stock and not just a select few parts for each engine. Well Dennis I think I have bent your ear and had you strain your eyes long enough on this long input to this new engine. Thank you again for the opportunity to respond to this new engine and your great video. Wish you well and look forward as always to any new videos you make Take care Dennis.
Thanks for the video! I ordered my engine November 2022 and got it almost 5 months later and finally got time to put it together today (4/15). The only problems I had was too much grease on the rocker covers made it hard to turn the camshaft, I just used a tiny piece of paper to get some of the grease out and one of the e clips for the rocker had a burr on the side that wouldn’t let it snap in place. I went to a local rc hobby shop and got a pack for $3. I’d like to get good at cad design and make my own mini diesel engines someday! Thanks for the help! I did have some extra parts in the pack when I was done putting it together though I’ll have to go through and see if I missed something
I just fought with your build man. Thanks for helping me build this motor. I won their 5.1 giveaway and one this little engine but I don't know how to hook up the wiring they sent me a CDI box running on gas too but I'm just going to run it on nitro at first and see how it works. But you may be send me a video of that
I have the same engine that I built that I am using for a STEM class in my High School class. First of all thank you for the video. Very well done. I have two questions. I can’t get it to start. 1. What fuel do you use and where can I get it. I have the gasoline version. Not the Nitro. 2. How far out is you gas screw turned out. I messed with mine and I need to set it back to factory. Thanks again for the video and thank you in advance for the help.
Hi thanks for your question the carbs are pretty sensitive to gasoline the nitro fuel uses twice the amount to burn where gas is half or less the incoming charge, if your carb needle settings are 1.5 on the idle and 2-2.5 on the high side on nitro try setting your idle to 3/4 of a turn and 1 3/4 on the high end for gasoline. I have had some tuning issues with gas and always go back to glow plugs and nitro lol
Hi Dennis Thanks a lot for this video I want to start my build for the same engine but I don’t know what fuel should I use and what type of oil should I put for assembly
I use any RC 20% nitro fuel that is available I use Valvoline red high temp wheel bearing grease to assemble but use the red grease on the cam and rocker arms, whatever you use for the lower rotating assembly will get washed away and replaced with the oil in the nitro fuel when you start it up, 👍
Thanks for all of these detailed instructions. I have not watched the full video (I've been jumping ahead), because I'm looking for advice for what type(s) of assembly lube and grease is necessary, and where... do you have any suggestions, as the Chinese assemble instructions do not mention assembly lubrication. Thank you!
I am just a bit concerned the camshaft timing wheel can be assembled 180 degrees different by the keyway. Both dots have to be at the bottom but surely 180 degrees off has to affect the compression?
Very informative video thank you but I have one query, where did you download the parts list for construction? I have searched and cannot find it. Cheers Q
Hi brother I just went to the link I had in my bookmarks and they seemed to have deleted it this is puzzling to me I actually visited Stirlingkits website and it's not there, I will contact them to find out why,
I need instructions with one more thing. Wiring a separate button for starting. I was told on a Facebook reply battery to button, button to starter motor red wire then negotiate from starting motor back to battery. What I'm confused about is d you do this with 2 glow inginters regulars? Thanks
Thanks for doing this video! Can it put in a rc to run a rc model? One more question sorry but I'm curious about powering the starter motor to v start the fs l200 ac thank you so much
Hi Dennis. I have this engine and built it buy following this video and reading the instructions from the toyan website. My engine just won’t fire up at all, I have thought of every possible way and solution to get it going, but have had no success. Would there be a way of contacting you other than this for some advice please? You seem to know a lot about these engines and feel your knowledge could help me to get this engine going. Thanks
It was the first build for my daughter and myself. We had never done a build before. We worked one afternoon for 3 hours before we broke a cam shaft. After waiting 2 months for a replacement, we worked another 3 hours and had the build complete. We were kind of slow as we would read the pdf instructions for each step, watch Mr. Dempsey perform the steps, decide our course of action and move onward. I don't know if that helps. Again, first timers.
