For my money, Jerry Garcia is the greatest guitar player of all time. But here's what Bob Dylan said when Jerry died: There’s no way to measure his greatness or magnitude as a person or as a player. I don’t think any eulogizing will do him justice. He was that great, much more than a superb musician, with an uncanny ear and dexterity. He’s the very spirit personified of whatever is Muddy River country at its core and screams up into the spheres. He really had no equal. To me he wasn’t only a musician and friend, he was more like a big brother who taught and showed me more than he’ll ever know. There’s a lot of spaces and advances between The Carter Family, Buddy Holly and, say, Ornette Coleman, a lot of universes, but he filled them all without being a member of any school. His playing was moody, awesome, sophisticated, hypnotic and subtle. There’s no way to convey the loss. It just digs down really deep...BOB DYLAN
One of the very best right there. Beautiful & real. Jerry Garcia always offered something special when he was on stage. An incredible sound that would turn into an experience. True, honest & incredible. The JGB and the Grateful Dead were two of the most intense & real sounds that anyone could ask for. Fantastic. Appreciations to you for sharing this.
I don't know where Jerry belongs in the greatest guitar player ever contest. All I do know is he is the best in my opinion and no one else comes close. His guitar playing reflects emotions that others can't touch to balls to the wall shredding.
JGB was often more enjoyable than the Dead themselves - after Englishtown in 77 the Dead just got so popular. JGB you could still catch in small venues or colleges often with an early show and a late show. Great times
For other guitarists they talk about a couple of amazing leads they had for Jerry Garcia you talk about how many amazing leads he had in any given show
WCOZ one of the big three FM radio stations back in the day in Boston, along with WBCN and WAAF out of Worcester. Jerry Garcia at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, N.Y., always a treat, he loved the place. Got an amazing "Sugaree" at my first Grateful Dead concert, it put me on the bus for good, and it was about six months after this show. Jer on the "Tiger" Guitar.
Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Jerry Garcia at number 13 on their list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. That might be a stretch, however, he is probably more original sounding than almost any other guitarist. Jerry Garcia has a totally original sound and style and played with true soul. With the Grateful Dead - he and them are legendary. Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead are the Grandfathers of tailgate parties and filling stadiums without hit songs and without marketing and advertising - a very grass roots approach of playing and growing the audience.Their own people designed and built their early microphones, speakers, speaker systems and recording devices. They also allowed their fans to record the concerts with equipment. The more you listen to Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, the more you will understand how great they really were.
jerry garcia"s strenghth as a guitarist seemed his abi lity to build extended solos of interesting move ment with a dreamy stoned quality and apparently if the occasion was right amazi g.
The best way to listen to the Grateful Dead is to listen to or watch the entire concert. Alpine Valley 89 or Tinley Park 90 are both available on youtube for free and MANY more. The Alpine show was released on DVD as its all downhill from here. I had the pleasure to be there and whenever i close my eyes and imagine being at a show, i always go straight back to Alpine 89 all three shows. I know an entire show is hard to react to but you could break them into a series. The Dead are extremely liberal about their copyrighted material. They just want the music to never stop. It was the honor of my life to have seen Jerry many many times including his last show.
Jerry was a great guitarist. He is often under rated because it makes it look so casual and easy. Check out Jerry's version of Georgia on My Mind for some fine guitar work.

Late 80's to early 90's JGB is the best, with Melvin Seals on the Hammond and keyboards. 🤙😎 Check out JGB's cover of "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down" from the late 80's to early 90's. There's a great version on a DVD they released years ago. 😎
