    Good, interesting and informative video.
With regards to the minuses - there is an extremely interesting situation.
Initially, the AK-12 was created by the Russian designer Zlobin V.V. had a lot more options. Among them:
    - Double sided shutter.
    - Two-way translator of fire modes (less cumbersome than on a classic AK).
    - Adjustable rear sight (provided that the front sight did not move to the gas tube, but remained in its usual place, which really was much more aesthetic, and also increased the aiming line)
    - More monolithic stock (somewhat similar to the FN SCAR stock)
But due to the fact that the new machine gun was assembled in a limited time, its design was not fully developed, and it had a number of "childhood diseases" (inherent in new weapons).
But it took a long time to fix the problems. In addition - the designer Zlobin V.V. left the Kalashnikov Concern and other people were already working on finalizing the machine.
Since the deadlines for the competition (for which the AK-12 was created) were running out, a decision was made to simplify the AK-12 as much as possible.
Because of what, many alleged innovations were crossed out, and the appearance of the weapon itself became more rude and nondescript.
That is why the current AK-12 is different from the early model that was called the AK-12 and was introduced into games such as Battlefield 4, Ghost Recon: Wildlens, Rainbow Six: Siege and World War 3.
Over time, the current version of the AK-12 will be improved, and all the originally announced innovations will be returned to it, as well as the original visually pleasing appearance will be returned (including the front sight in the right place, like the AK-47 / AKM / AK- 74/AK-74M/AK-103).

    • @kyleabrezzi
      @kyleabrezzi 2 роки тому +15

It seems there were real innovations planned, but due to time constraints, staff leaving and other common issues; it was decided to remain conservative.

Others have mentioned that the AK-12 doesn't lock back on the last round, which I see as a potentially complex change to a proven design. What I'm curious to know is why the Russians went to the trouble to make a new magazine with features like witness holes and a photoluminescent follower, but didn't add a bolt lock follower like Croatian AK magazines? I have a whole box of them, they've been absolutely reliable, and the empty magazine bolt-lock feature works perfectly. That seems like a simple solution with a huge payoff as opposed to redesigning the rifle itself.

    • @_b_x_b_1063
      @_b_x_b_1063 2 роки тому +9

When developing early versions of the AK-12, this was the case, but reliability decreases. Also, with frequent use of the GP-25 "Koster" or GP-30 "Shoe" grenade launcher, it becomes impossible to use lightweight or balanced automation (for this reason, the early AK-12 and balanced AK-107 were abandoned). The under-barrel grenade launcher literally "kills" the AK resource

@@_b_x_b_1063 Appreciate the response, and you're absolutely right, "The Unknown History of (the) Russian AK-12 Kalashnikov Rifle: Part 2" article by Kalashnikov Concern's Vladimir Onokoy describes this. The strange part is that the current bolt-lock Croatian AK mags don't require any special mechanism (as Onokoy appears to describe) added to the AK design. The follower simply sticks up far enough to stop the bolt after the last round, so there's nothing to reduce reliability when the magazine is loaded, and no special bolt lock mechanism is needed. So, again, why complicate the rifle and the magazine, when a simple follower change will do, the design concept already exists, AND they're creating a new magazine already? Very interesting mindset, to say the least.

It's kinda interesting how different areas of military tech have kinda stopped evolving at different points. Guns have largely been stuck in the past, with minor updates and changes over the years. Most aircraft in service are airframes that were designed decades ago. The A-10, F-15, F-15, MIG-29, and SU-27 were all designed in the late 60s and early 70s. There are newer versions of them (like the SU-35, which is an updated SU-27), but these updates are mostly concentrated on instrumentation and sensors, not airframe changes (you can imagine that planes designed before home computers were a thing need some upgrades in the electronics department). Tanks are much the same story, the M1 Abrams and Leopard 2 were both designed in the 70s, the T-80 a couple years before that. The Challenger 2 is probably the newest tank in proper active service, entering service in the late 90s. Like the aircraft these tanks have been updated in terms of optics, targeting packages, and new armor addons (both composite and ERA).

Weapons development has hit a plateau by now. Pretty much everything IN and ON a gun has been done to meta. Something that could spark actual innovation could be a breakthrough in things we already see in the prototype stage like Railguns, Coilguns, Laser or Plasma.
Or, as was suggested in a Q&A on FW, if tomorrow a powder is discovered that is double as powerful as what we have today, that could spark innovation. Shorter, smaller guns with the same power (as only half the powder is required) for example.

Cool video, what can I say in addition ... well, firstly, this is one of the first samples of the AK-12, let's conditionally call it generation 1 or type 1.
Secondly, they refused to misfire in two rounds, for two reasons a) the army is not needed, b) it made production more difficult
Thirdly, they also abandoned the stock, on the new ones it comes from AK-evo (AK-12 generation 2)
Fourthly, the sights were changed to more compact ones, for the convenience of installing optical sights. (AK-12 generation 2)
Well, by the way, he did not show a removable gas outlet cover for ease of cleaning, but in the future it allows you to install adjustable gas blocks. The butt is fixed by analogy with the Vyatskiye Polyana. Well, the forearm always plays on the AK, so it doesn’t matter. Well, although there are aluminum solutions that will solve the problem, just don’t ask the question why they didn’t do it right away, the contractor of the RF Ministry of Defense was obligatory to mount an underbarrel grenade launcher, so the poet did it.
P.s. I wonder how much money Brandon will spend on AKV-521?😅

The AK-12 having a burst-round mode that's basically a "conscript-proof" feature kinda reminds me of the M-25 Hornet from the sci-fi shooter Mass Effect 3. The M-25 Hornet was designed by a human black-ops military organization known as "Cerberus" as the main weapon used by their common soldiers. It has a three-round burst with decent armor penetration, but the reason why the gun is stuck on that mode is because it's to save ammunition for prolonged firefights, so that the troops don't just "spray and pray" and waste ammo like noobs. At first, one would ask the question "why would Cerberus conscript-proof their guns when they're supposed to be an elite black-ops group?" Then you raid Cerberus HQ and find out that most of the guys they were throwing at you were new recruits that they probably scraped off the streets, which explains why their guns have such a feature.
Then you find the Cerberus rifle that's assigned to their elite troops, and it's the Cerberus Harrier; a fully-automatic rifle with high armor penetration and RPM, and the elite Cerberus troops that wield it, according to its lore blurb, are trained to fire short, controlled bursts. You don't need to conscript-proof a gun that only the real soldiers get to wield.

I'm kind of surprised that they didn't just go with a more "modern" design, meaning possibly something like giving it a "true" upper receiver type design that most modern assault rifles have that holds zero-both for the top rail and the handguards-much better than a top cover with pic rail slots in it(and doing essentially the same thing with the handguard), giving it better ergos, particularly the handguard, etc., as opposed to just making a slightly better AK that can more easily accept optics.
I mean I get that this is probably much more cost efficient, since they can keep the same tooling, and they can maintain parts compatibility with the ak-74m's, as well as being able to keep the training and manual of arms nearly identical, but man. I'd really like a truly modern AK(hell, I'd like to get my hands on one of these, and this is barely different than a 74.) Then again, I suppose if they did that it wouldn't even really be an AK anymore. Maybe they just need to move from the AK(and uh, you know, just send the old one's here when you're done. 😉)

^thats not true. Idky people just say things without knowing anything about it. That would bother me if I ever did that. Much of the most combat ready infantry units were part of the initial invasion force. It was a blitzkrieg. It was meant to last 3 days - why wouldn’t they send their best? That’s how it’s always worked in a modern army. The US will always send either marines or a select few units in the army. 101, 82nd, 173rd, 1-4 ID, maybe the rangers. The best.

Like said in another comment most russian units in ukraine at the moment are conscripts and reservists. They're starting to see some vdv but outside of that not much modern stuff. The russians knew modern AT weapons were going to take a toll so they wait for things to calm a bit before sending there shiny new toys

Can't believe that in December the Ak-47 will be 75 years old from when it first did testing trials at the Shchurovsky testing range.

I'll be mildly interested in an AK12 review when you have an actual AK12.
