  • The Kankakee River in North West Indiana surprises me with how clean and healthy this river is. I spend the day kayak fishing for bass and pike in this forgotten waterway. Once upon a time this river took travelers and traders from Lake Michigan all the way to the Mississippi River and then on down to the Gulf of Mexico. This beautiful day on the river is full of great fishing.

That river is fascinating. The headwater area around South Bend drains a bunch of different watersheds. It even drains a small section of Berrien County, Michigan near the town of Galien, Mi via Geyer Ditch near just north of its confluence with Chain O' Lakes Ditch. Near that marshy/farmland area in Berrien County, Michigan, those upper reaches of Kankakee River tributaries come within a mile or so of some far flung reaches of the Galien River and the St. Joseph River. Both of those rivers drain into Lake Michigan separately. If You look at a Map of "Dayton Lake" near Galien, Michigan, tributaries to all 3 watersheds are probably within relative walking distance of one another. I am sure they interchanged during times of high water back in the days of the extensive wetlands.

Good video on kayaking and fishing the Kankakee River. my son-in-law and i are planning a Kankakee River trip sometime this summer to start in nw Ind and end in ILL and hoping to fish the whole length. Really appreciate your video. Once we see how this goes we may try longer trips, maybe even over night and on different rivers.

That sounds amazing! My brother and I do the same type of trip with a canoe on another river. It's always a good time. I wish you and your son-in-law a fun trip. Keep me posted on how that trip goes, would love to see some videos and photos of those fish. I'm sure you're going to get into some good smallies.

@@user-ft9ip9zo2z Nice! This is near the spring head and is very shallow and cool water so I don't expect it to hold huge bass, I've seen some good pike in here though.

Great video and beautiful area and fish! Im used to fishing the illinois side so its neat to see further east. Ive always wanted to fish that side. Looks like the channelized portion. Did you come across any man made dikes or channels coming off the main channel? I heard the pike like to use them for spawning.
    Great footage!

Welcome to the Tribe John, I appreciate you commenting on this video! I'm going to have to fish the Illinois side sometime, or maybe start in IN and end in IL. That is a great question and you are spot on. Yes, there are several dikes and channels, on another day I saw about 8 pike in one little channel that was flowing into the main river. They were all around the mouth of it just circling around like bass on a bed. Do you mostly target pike? They are an awesome fish!

Great video! I fished the river at the state line with Illinois but never near South Bend. Where can I park to put in my kayak for the day?

Hi Eddie, There is a great place to park and launch at the Kingsbury Fish & Wildlife Area, parking lot boat lauch (S 600 E, Walkerton, IN 46574) Or if you're looking for something closer to South Bend, you can launch here: Jasinski Launch. St Joseph County Parks Crumstown Hwy, South Bend, IN 46619 In my opinion the area near Kingsbury is a better part of the river in later summer. Take care and good fishing!

@@onebadshad If your in Indiana on the Kankakee your actually fishing a man made canal but still beautiful and clean. Check out this video to start to learn about the tragedy that is the kankakee river that use to be known as the Everglades of the North the Grand Kankakee Marsh before it was drained and made into a canal and the land sold off. Most people don't know about it and what it once was. Thanks so much for the info I can't wait until I get a chance to go and check it out. Peace

What lure we’re you pitching that drove those smallies wild? Planning on kayaking for the first time out there soon

It's a Strike King swim jig in all white with a rage tail trailer, I used to find this jig and 3-4 trailers in a pack on the bottom shelf at the big W-Mart stores for a good price. I haven't seen them there in a while but they have the same thing packaged individually. One thing I do that i believe drives them crazy is I trim the skirt to just where the bend of the hook starts so the trailer has the freedom to move and then I cut the trailer ( about 1/4 off ) so the trailer is now about 3/4 the size if that makes sense. Then when I put the trailer on, I put it on the hook so the rage tails kick sideways, in other words when sitting in your had on it's side the trailer tail will look like a fish rather than a craw, it makes a compact little bait with a great profile and swimming action. When I figured this out one day, Man! they went crazy. Good to hear you're getting out on the water, just keep in mid the St. Joe when it has rained can be deceptively dangerous. Have fun and let me know how it goes?
