Absolute madlad getting everything running that fast! Very excited to see more prints and how you progress, I'm sure you're going to be making techy toning moves in like a week ahah!
So I just step in my darkroom last night for the first time. I enjoyed it tremendously. I only tried to print a contact sheet and kinda sucked at it. So many questions to answer, but Can't wait to go at it again. Been watching the same youtubers you mentioned. Here to us both having success in the near future.
Haven’t been in a darkroom since high school but boy do I miss it, it’s super relaxing to be in the darkroom and really slow down to make some old fashioned prints! Awesome video as always!
Awesome! Super productive first day in the darkroom. I just got a space set up at my home and it's so fun and meditative to make prints. I have one last tweak to make to my enlarger setup and I should be good to go for a while. Looking forward to seeing more!
Would love to do this some day, appreciate this look of what it's like just to get the process off the ground. Certainly makes it less intimidating. Super keen on these classic medium format negatives you've recovered from Emma's granddad, amazing to be making prints of those images.
I picked up a printing setup with a color head enlarger, timer, trays, etc for free. Ordered a box of Fuji paper, Kodak chemicals, and a clean Nikon lens. I attempted my first color print. Everything came out looking pretty shitty, but trying it all out was the fun part.
Kodak color print viewing filters are super helpful when trying to get correct colors in the darkroom. Changed everything for me when it comes to priniting in color
Crazy how fast you got this all going. Looking forward to seeing more darkroom content. I'm getting more and more interested in darkroom printing these days! Thanks haha
loved this video man and can't even imagine how good it must feel to touch and hold something you created from your vision. Love it. Thank you for sharing with us
Hook, line, and sinker. You're doomed. But for real...great work! As somebody who has started printing within the last 6mo, here's a handful of helpful tips. Take them for what they are worth. 1) Your dark black on edges are likely light leaks of sorts, maybe from phone as recording developing? 2) Not perfect, but you can turn phone screen red by going to settings>accessibility>display&text>color filters. 3) If you have issues with chemical odors, look in to ECO darkroom chems. 4) Split grade printing is a lifesaver. 5) Shoot Film Like a Boss and The Naked Photographer have great YT channels for all things darkroom. Enjoy!
Yeah I definitely won’t be filming or using my phone every time. Haha odors were good. The fixer I use doesn’t smell that much. There is some airflow through. Thanks for the tips!
Mine is insulated but does get cold. The developer definitely drops in temp a tad bit so it does take a bit longer to develop. Nothing substantial though thankfully.
Such a good video Bryan! I got my first experience in the darkroom a couple months ago but didn't have enough light inside the room to film anything haha. I loved the whole experience and I can't wait to get back to hand printing! Can't wait to follow your journey with that 😁
Super awesome! Looks like it was a really rewarding investment. I got my enlarger a few weeks ago, but I've been a bit busy so I haven't been able to take advantage yet. This video makes me even more hungry to get in there. Looking forward to more
I did home darkroom printing for 2 decades, plus 20 years with Kodak processing lab... Yes I'm old. I'm late with this but just from what I can see from your setup move your darkroom lights much further away... 4' away minimum... it fogs the paper. Other then that have fun.
Fantastic first prints, can’t wait for more darkroom content on your channel! I am impressed by how fast you put this up and how fast you came to usable results, my first trials looked waaaay worse haha. This definitely motivated me to un-dust my darkroom and go printing since it has been a while!
Great video dude! Awesome first prints! I haven’t printed in the dark room with an enlarged in a long time but I remember feeling like a mad scientist when doing it haha
Inspiring to see and also for you to mention that it’s not as hard as I think it is in my head! As soon as I move later this year and have the available space, I’ll be hopefully setting up my own. Expect me to hassle you with questions now you’re the man in the know 😂 Sorry not sorry.
Its so fun, been learning myself during the last year in my local photoclubs darkroom! But i have to ask, are you only doing developer and fixer, with no stop bath?? Only saw 2 trays
Photographers Formulary TF-5 fixer only requires a rinse before fixing and no stop bath. First round I only had two trays. Second round I had a rinse tray before fixing. Goes the same with developing film. No stop bath required. Super convenient. My favorite fixer for that reason.
As always, very enjoyable content! Are you sure your safe light is safe enough? Looks pretty bright and orange on the vid. That lack of contrast could also come from here.
So cool watching you start your printing journey! I've been wanting to get into darkroom printing as well, but do you think I should use my money on a workshop or the equipment to do it?
I would look around Facebook, Craigslist and online for cheap setups! Do your research on what you would want. There are a lot out there selling for dirt cheap that work great. I got mine because it had everything I needed and I didn’t have to worry about buying anything extra besides paper and developer.
I don't think it's been said, but you may want to hang your Thomas Duplex from the ceiling or something and not have it directly faced toward your paper. Although it's considered "safe", having it that close to your paper, and having it pointed directly at your trays can or may affect your paper.
@@BryanBirks I have one as well. Back when I installed it in my small makeshift darkroom/bathroom I had to do paper tests. Also check out Greg's video on refurbing your glass filters for it. ua-cam.com/video/_et0AedernI/v-deo.html

Haha platinum palladium prints coming right up.
Happy that “Madlad” is also a phrase used in SA!
When that initial music first can win I was expecting a comedy of errors but images looked amazing!
love how calming your videos are! really refreshing

Yes sir. It’s a great process to take part in. Cheers 🤘🏻
I took photo classes in the early 2010s and the Darkroom was always fun!. The Lab guy always played the Rolling Stones loud!! Good Times!!!!
I’m going to need music in mine as well.
I knew you'd love developing yourself, seeing the print appear before your eyes is so much more satisfying, can't wait to see you develop next
It really is like magic.
Super cool. I know nothing about darkroom printing but now I'm intrigued.
It’s very rewarding. Definitely check it out!
Cool seeing you go through the process. The reward is even sweeter after getting your own set up going too! Can’t wait to see more darkroom videos!
It’s the best. More darkroom stuff in the next vid!
Can’t wait to see more videos on the darkroom. Thanks again.
I am envy you got that whole set in such a good price. Hope to see more of darkroom printing
Great Video. Darkroom Printing is very therapeutic
I can definitely see that.

The enlarger is huuuuuuuuge!!
A wee bit. Haha

Like someone else said I can already see it being very therapeutic.
That's so exciting. it's something I'm looking forward to doing some day. Those vintage negative prints look fantastic!
I was very surprised by how good they came out myself.
Awesome portrait prints, those old negs you printed came out so well too!
Thank you John 🙏🏻
Excited to see you eventually use some fiber based papers
Everyone is talking them up. Definitely excited to try them 👊🏻

@@majus7032 do you have any recommendations? I was looking far and wide couldn't find many options.
@@atroche1978 The one I bought is called "Kodak color print viewing filter kit" and I got it on eBay for around 50$
so so so good

More to come in the next video as well 🤙🏻
Great job Bryan!
Thank you!
cool, I have the same enlarger.
Congrats! Darkroom printing is really fun and zen like. Btw using no contrast filter is about the same as using a grade 2 filter.
Thanks! Yeah I read that after the fact. I was using a grade 3 for the old negatives that seems to really help with the exposure time.
It caught me off guard when he hit his head. Quality content as always.
Yay! :)

Building up my darkroom in the garage. Can’t wait, but it’s not insulated so I’m hoping April will be warm enough

Definitely scratching my mad scientist itch. Haha
hello, where can i get myself a handyman such as this to install a darkroom in my tiny apartment? kind regards
The only thing I know how to use is a drill. I could barely hang a power strip from the ceiling. Lmao

Interesting. I may have to look into that. I feel like they’re really red at the start and then gradually start to turn orange. Hmm.
@@BryanBirks at 3:45 the red light seems way safer
Yeah I figured that. If anything I’ll point the other ones out of direct position. Or just get new ones. Thank you!

I subscribed a couple days ago. Will have to dive into his darkroom vids.
Check out Shoot Film Like a Boss channel. Such a geniune no-nonsens channel with lots of hands on in the darkroom.
I’ve watched a couple of his already. Great dude.
Never seen anyone wear a mask in a darkroom before
Poor ventilation. I had spilled some chemicals and the stench was strong.
