The fact that they have enough self awareness to look into a mirror, or a phone and see themselves, and THEN realize that the person holding "them" in the phone is you, but to realize something isn't right, and look up and be scared of you because of your reflection. Tells us they have enough cognizance for this. Previously it was thought that primates realize this but now we know our feline and canine friends do too. Intriguing...

But when I put on a 50-cent plastic coyote mask, he freaked out and went BALLISTIC!!! He literally went crazy-barking and growling, the hair on his body standing straight up. It think it was something about that pointy snout that elicited some sort of primal instinct in him that said: "Danger." It made him so upset, I never put it on again...
The crazy thing is that they know it's their reflection. I remember they made tests & said that only some apes are able to realize when looking in a mirror, that it is their reflection. I believe my dog realizes it too. He sometimes watches me through the mirror in the hallway.
My cat and dog both always watch me through a mirror when I come down the stairs. I’ll ask what are they doing and what are they looking at and they sit still and silent until I’m silent and still then they will meow or bark. Maybe to see my reaction? And will come up the stairs if I’m still silent and not moving for more than 30 seconds lol 😂
