Toasting barrel is much more complicated than a cosmetic browning of the inside. The heated wood makes the sap that is trapped inside the wood coagulate so that there isn’t as much loss of the spirit to the “angels share“ during the aging process. I certainly agree with the second part of your explanation that charing it gives it much more character because the penetration of the spirit into the charred oak barrel allows the spirit to take on many of the enjoyable flavors that we look for in a good bourbon.
Thanks Ed. I spent eight weekends on the Bourbon Trail when I was on an employment assignment in eastern Kentucky. I was planning on doing a UA-cam video for bourbon lovers describing my experiences and guiding someone who might be interested in either taking that trip or who cannot make that trip but would like to know what type of experiences they can experience on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
You might want to try Lagavulin it'll give you a whole new taste of char. You will either love it or take up smoking because of the unforgettable smokey flavor.
Willian Fender haha that is going to make Evan unbearably happy... Thanks for watching Willian, appreciate it (as Evan will the observation). Cheers, Ed
The sound effects on this are hilarious

@@mariocerame876 That sounds like it would be a great video. I've not had chance to do the Bourbon Trail - but would love to, at some point.
