  • Whether it is running educational and medical institutions, engaging in charity and development works or endorsing candidates and lobbying for ministerial berths, mathas or mutts are institutions peculiar to the state of Karnataka.
The State is home to hundreds of mathas, representing the many castes and sub-castes. Politically significant among them are Lingayats, Vokkaligas and Kurubas.
Over the years, Karnataka has seen a growing interdependence between politicians and pontiffs. Today, these spiritual and religious institutions can even make or break a candidate’s electoral fortunes.
Successive governments have also supported the mathas, whether by association of high-profile leaders, allocation of land or through budgetary grants.
But how did these mathas and their pontiffs gain followers and clout to become so crucial to Karnataka’s political landscape? How has this affected the State’s electoral and identity politics?
We speak to Janaki Nair, a Bengaluru-based historian and retired professor, Centre for Historical Studies, JNU.
    Presentation: Nalme Nachiyar
    Video and production: Ravichandran N.

The amount of financial transactions done by these religious organizations in the name of medical education calls for investigative journalism.

They don't have a problem with that. Only hindu is baad saar hindu temples bad, mathas are bad but churches, mosques and missionaries are good. This channel is owned by khangress who wants to divide lingayats from hinduism too
Mathas opened schools and feed free food for poor students. My father himself studied in siddhaganga matha now he is in good position

You cant see other religion issues only hindus will be targeted. I lt is as N. Ram owner of The Hindu media is a left leaning media boss.
We know kerala politics is dominated by mullahs and diocese. They decide who wins the political battle, but The Hindu wont discuss that. N. Ram should change his media from The Hindu to The Hypocrite. That will be more Apt...

Remember it’s not about Caste or Religion. It’s all about land and money. Very topical. Nobody has the guts to question both parties. Thank you The Hindu.

Ahuja, all these MATAS run 100s of english schools and colleges some are completely free like Siddaganga and others are cheap just like foreign funded christian convents or waqf which destabilise demography .So they prevent influence of foreign religions and prevent us from fleeing from our homeland Karnataka just like ur sindhi ancestors did in 1947 or these keralite Nair madam recently.

Political leadership should be merit based.
Prove oneself at the local or municipal level first. If you can create first class cities then run for chief minister post.
