This interview is exactly why Mr. Harper is the man to continue in the drivers seat to keep our Amazing Country of Canada strong. I chose wrong careers. One thing I’ve learned about politics & politicians over the yrs Claude, NO PM will ever be perfect or Please everyone. Just NOT possible. There will always be people who Hate & Love the PM, whoever it may be. There are things Mr. Harper has done, for sure I don’t agree with. But I just cannot fathom Mr. Trudeau or Mulcair as Leader of our Great Country. I remember in 2011 reading in Yahoo News, there were 12 Political Experts across Canada, interviewed & asked ‘Who’ is the right man to lead Canada. +oicub2 Delivery of healthcare is a provincial responsibility, it has nothing to do with Harper. Unfortunately, Ontario Liberals have delisted several procedures in order to pay off their union buddies.
+Ric O'Shea You understand the federal government is the one in charge of distributing the healthcare budget to each province, right? They also, for the most part, control the legislation. So when Harper makes cuts, each province takes a hit.

He has everything to do with making Canada overly dependant on the price of oil, though. He's been in power for 9 years, so the economic policies that lead to us falling into a recession when oil prices drop, are fully on his administration.
9 years of deficits and 2 recessions under a conservative government. Economic policy should not be a conservative talking point as they clearly aren't very good at it.
+stygiansun Statist myth and BS on stilts. The size of the oil and gas industry in Canada (and hence our dependence on it) was determined long before Stephen Harper's Conservatives came to power.
The environment in which the oil and gas sector developed included free markets, the size of the resource and a combination of federal regulation and provincial regulations and royalties. The biggest influence by far was provincial government policy. This is made obvious by the differences between conservative Alberta and socialist Saskatchewan. Alberta's oil industry grew and Alberta became wealthy while Saskatchewan's stagnated and Saskatchewan remained a have not province for decades until conservative Brad Wall recently turned things around.

Just curious, can people give me three UNBIASED reasons why he had to be removed from power? Like, facts, not just blind hatred. I am having a hard time finding neutral websites on what Harper did during his term.

He removed all protection on endangered animals, so you can kill a endangered deer without a prob if you are following TN the guidlines for regular deer. He removed science advisor roll and cut Canada's science budget and almost half the scientist were laid of.(Biased part) He is an asshole
+Philippe Well some issues that happened in Harper's tenure were:
-Continuing with the F-35 program that has gone over budget and costly from it's original projection
-He was found in contempt of parliament in 2011 because he wouldn't disclose the information on the program
-Stephen Harper's PMO office had become a highly centralist organization whereby cabinet ministers were put on a tighter leash (MP Michael Chong made a bill to react to Harper's actual restrictions)
- Many people blamed Stephen Harper on cutting budgets to Health Canada to properly test drugs and pest chemicals (notably Neonicotinoids that kill bees), as well as meat processing/ mad cow disease response
-He removed the mandatory long form census and replaced it with a voluntary household survey, which has removed important information for government to make valued decisions.
-Harper used Lynton Crosby (australian campaign strategist), who gave him hints to use ethnic politics to rally up the conservative base against the liberals, but people saw right through it and were very angered by that action.
-His caucus was staunchly Pro-Israel, and many people, even conservatives, saw it as an obtuse policy during last years palestinian conflict.
-Harper made Bill C-51, which basically ended all votes from the libertarian side of the conservative party.
-Bill C-24 was viewed as a highly controversial bill that made a two-class system of citizens, ones who are not first or second generation canadians, and those who have been here for a long time.
- Private prisons, the same entity as that used in the United States (blamed for causing high incrimination rates: refer to cash for kids scandal) was created by Harper.
- Stephen Harper cut income tax rates for the upper income individuals of canadian society, but also cut employment insurance and welfare transfers to the poorest
-He didn't take any action about murdered or missing women, he didn't see the death of indigenous women as important.
-His actions and spending for the G-20 summit on gazebos and fake lakes was scene as extremely overzealous spending by a majority of canadians
-His muting of Canadian scientist on climate change was abysmal, even by many conservatives. He intentially defunded environment canada scientific discoveries.
-He was staunchly a denier of major climate impacts of the Alberta Oil Sands, really rallied up the environmentalist side of Canada.
I probably missed a lot more, but that's just a few of many reasons that he rallied the people of canada against his party.
Liberals, liberals, and liberals. Same goes for the US.

I would 100% agree with you on that. Canada wasn’t even in a recession in 2015, it was just slow growth coming from other countries. People were able to live a normal life with minimum wage, shootings were low, taxes were low for small businesses, 80% of Canada was proven to be healthy and strong. Obviously Harper wasn’t perfect, he often tells people that. When people got too comfortable with the way things were, people just thought anyone could run this government.

When are the Veterans of this country that have "Written a check with their lives, to be cashed by Canada if need be" now that the check wasn't cashed, when will our Veterans looked after for the sacrifices we/they have made. I don't give a shit if duffy spent 90k I care that thousands of Veterans are starving because they can't work, are medical/mentally injured, and need the help. Harper needs to open on the VAC offices, and to delete the limitation of veterans pensions penalized at 65. When do we get this help? The Conservatives are the only party putting the economy first and their they only part who's fiscal policy actually makes a lick of sense. I have problems with his social policy, but I think his policies are the most beneficial for the Canadian taxpayer in a long time. What I'm hoping is that if he wins that in 2-5 years, he'll step down and a new leader will continue his economic policies with a more center leaning social policy. That would be innumerably better than the current opposition alternatives. Particularly Justin Trudeau.

If Canada was like a car and the prime minister was the driver. Which out of these three would you pick to drive you through a historically deadly narrow cliff side road?
A) A driver who has his full license and gets you to where you need to go. The cost of this driver: A cover that prevents you from seeing outside the car so that you don't panic and ask him to stop and turn around. His main goal is to get you to where you asked without you panicking about the cliff. Occasionally in the cover you forget there is even a cliff.
B) A driver who says he has a full license and is promising you to get you to where you need to go. He seems like a nice guy. Based on this you believe him. The cost of this driver: It turns out the driver doesn't have a recognized license (he has a license from a failed driving school. People keep going to this driving school because the driving instructors seem like nice guys. Unfortunately their previous graduates have driven down this road and have been killed.
C) A driver who is completely honest and forthcoming, leaves no covers, tells no lies. The cost of this driver: He admits from the onset that he has no license. But if you let him drive you through the deadly cliff side road, he will get practice. And if he gets practice he might be able to drive you again. At the end, this might end up in him being the only driver that can drive well and be transparent. But most likely it will end in another car in the deadly cliff side.
D) Green Party. Cost: Won't get to drive even if you pick them.
E) Bloc Quebecios. Cost: Will take one of the tires off the car and try to make a new car from that tire. As for journey, you now have a car with three wheels and still no driver
F) This. I'm not letting any of these guys drive in my world. I'll let others decide for me since all of these guys aren't perfect.
A= Harper B= Mulcair C= Trudeau
(Despite what you all may say I support none of these guys for the reasons stated above.) Although it might seem as if I support the Liberals or Conservatives I'm in F) response camp for now. Unless Trudeau magically finds his license or Harper cuts the secrecy and lies I plan on remaining there.

A good interview by Peter Mansbridge. In spite of the badgering now and then, it was tough but fair. Stephen Harper's responses were excellent, he appeared relaxed and in a good humor, tossing a couple of good zingers Mansbridge"s way.
Harper is a better choice any day than the hopelessly immature boy Trudeau or the NDP (no matter who leads the NDP, it will be dominated by far left, out-to-lunch radicals).
Everything seems to be so simple from his point of view.
Then it will be simple for Trudeau even if he is not ready (just to mock the ads campaign).

I don't hate Harper. He seems like a nice guy. His policies are ridiculously close minded and I can't wait to see him go. I think he'll make a good post-PM, you know one of those guys who shares his opinion in newspapers. Got to get him out of power though.

I'm incredibly worried about the level of exaggeration going on in the discussions about this election. None of the party leaders are evil, or out to do harm to Canada (Quebec separation aside), or the people they represent. The reality is that these are all people who sacrifice their personal lives to do their best to serve the public. Obviously that's not true 100% of the time for any one of them, and there is an intense need to look critically at each politician's shortcomings - whether they're the leader of their party or not - but it needs to be understood that we are electing people to these positions, and not the perfected personas that they put forward during a campaign. Stephen Harper is a person, with feelings, who understands the pressure of being the leader of this country. That being said, in this interview I believe he showed that he can no longer hold the confidence of the members of his party enough to dictate their actions the way he's done in the past, and his track record has shown that he is not a collaborative leader. This means to me that his lack of absolute control can very easily turn into a lack of any control. He and his party don't have economic, social, security, or international policies that I support so I won't be voting for them - but that doesn't mean I think he's evil, he simply doesn't represent what I want for Canada. It's important to understand the issues, and be informed so that you can form an opinion for yourself, the idea that this hyperbole is contributing to the political conversation whatsoever is absolutely wrong, and actually dissuades people from looking farther into important issues.

The problem with Harper is, it's either his way, or no way. Kind of closed off about what he does, not transparent enough. You can see he doesn't like taking questions though, despite this i don't mortally hate him like what i'm seeing in the comments.
