Letts React after u finish the series react to nostalgia critic's (another youtuber) videos on avatar best and worst episodes along with his live action review. They are all hilarious
When Katara said Aang wouldn't understand she meant losing a parent, Aang didn't know his parents, especially his mother as the temples didn't mix male and female. And she also meant that he does not understand taking revenge as he was brought and taught by the monks to not engage in and to avoid conflict at all costs. And through out the series it was proven over and over that Katara was more drawn to her mother especially knowing that she was the reason for her mother's death in a way. Sokka was more drawn to his father as it was proven over and over. Tho I must admit it was insensitive but then again we are talking about a 14 year old. Just wanted to lay it out, hope you understand now. : )
@@amahlgrant Except he would likely understand very well. Monk Gyatso was essentially Aang's father, and had a very similar parental relationship. Also, we know from The Storm that Aang feels responsible for Gyatso's death. So the situations are quite similar. Aang even went into the same level of rage initially when he found out about Gyatso, but Katara was there to calm him down, and prevent him from losing control. The parallel's are really amazing how they tie into each other, as Aang's words probably helped Katara to not lose control when she was about to go for the kill.
Maybe because only 5 episode left after this episode ? When would she even bring her mother honestly, during the war ? or between the fight with azula ? Very flawed argument.
@@the_crypter argument? Who am I arguing with? Lol It was a light hearted observation, and I think she always has blamed herself a little for her mother’s death. “If only I ran faster” “what if I stayed with her” “I was too late” , and I think after this episode she does let it go, even if she didn’t forgive the man who murderer her mother, she finally had the resolution she always wanted, which is quite powerful.
Yes, that makes so much sense! I don’t think it’s out of the picture to say that Hama was the last waterbender taken from the Southern Tribe before Kya’s death. The tribe was already familiar with waterbender imprisonment but they never knew of the horrors Hama committed that would cement Kya’s doom.
The fact that Montana understood that Katara had Survivors Guilt is incredible and kind of a relief bc I thought she was gonna turn into a Katara hater. Katara went through a lot at a very young age and being the last person to see her mom before finding her burned to death is traumatizing.
One overlooked detail. A lot of people overlook this one. When she said to Sokka that he didn’t love her the way she did. She was referring to when Sokka said he couldn’t remember his mother’s face because Katara filled the role. She called him out in a fit of anger. And judging by his tone, it wasn’t him being offended. It was more him silent agreeing. Because another large difference between Sokka and Katara’s story aside survivors guilt. They left Kya’s body. So when she ran into the tent...yeah. Did they talk it out later? Most likely judging by how they went right back to normal. Not something one can just ignore and move on
Take a moment to appreciate that Katara was the one who caught Zuko when he was falling despite her antagonism towards him. They both saved each other's lives in that opening. Also Katara forgiving and hugging Zuko in one of the best moments in this whole show.
Zuko: You were right. Violence wasn’t the answer. Aang: It never is. Zuko: well I have a question for you... What are you gonna do when you face my father? Me: DAYYYUUUUUMMMMMMM This is a very unique show that ask the hard questions and that’s why I love it.
Well, he can imprison him... But considering this was a year ago I assume you already watched the end and know what happens. I wont spoil tho in case you didnt idk
Another reason why katara talks about her mom so much is that yon ra was unarmed so he had to fire bend to kill kya and then when katara came back she had to see her burned dead mother and sokka didn't.
Plus, its likely that Yon Ra was particularly brutal, considering how he managed to kill her quickly enough that he was out of the house by the time Katara and Hakoda got there. Not to mention it would've been quick and brutal enough to ensure she couldnt fight back (considering he assumed she was a bender). So were probably talking explosion or house fire victim bad.
ah yes the infamous Grey Delisle a voice of our childhood, she also voiced Daphne from a Scooby doo cartoon, Mandy from Grimm adventures of billy and Mandy and was the voice of Frankie from foster home for imaginary friends
That's something I feel a lot of reactors don't get. Like, she was a child and found her brutally murdered mother. Yes, Sokka lost his mom, but he doesn't have the same memory (and he even admitted that he barely remembers her thanks to Katara taking her place). And yes, Aang lost his people, but he never came face to face with the people responsible (and they must have all been dead anyway) and we shouldn't forget how *he* treated everyone, especially Katara, when Appa got stolen. Idk, it just feels a bit hypocritical to me how people shit on Katara for how she acted in this episode, it's very understandable imo.
She probably ran into the room to find her mother whom she loved so much’s burnt, limp body laying on the ground. Then she probably had to run, crying, to someone else who she hoped could heal her mother. After trying to feel hopeful, she was given the news that her mother was truly, 100%, dead. It’s so sad
I see a lot of people really disliking the way Katara treated Aang and Sokka in this episode. Let me just say that there are *a lot* of irrational things you'll say or do when you're full of built-up rage. Yes, it was irrational for Katara to say that Sokka didn't love their mother. This is from her built-up anger and grief. Sokka might have been more attached to their father, wanting to be a warrior and a leader growing up. He might not have as close a relationship with their mother, which might explain why he couldn't even remember his mother's face. Katara was left to fill in the role of their mother while Sokka, being older and being a boy, might have handled the grief better. Next, Aang lost his people, his culture, his whole identity, which is a tremendous loss. However, he was not there to help them. He did not even know that shit's going to happen after he left. Moreover, the people who conducted the genocide are most probably dead. Aang couldn't focus his anger on anyone because he's a natural optimist, taught that everyone has good in them. Aang naturally looks on the bright side of things and the monks taught him to forgive. When Aang found out about the genocide, he had emotional support from Katara, which plays a big part of handling the grief. Now, think of it in Katara's POV, she was the reason her mother sacrificed herself. She was there just moments before her mother was killed. She saw the killer right in front of her and she couldn't do anything at all. She was just a small, weak kid. It's *very* easy for a kid to blame themselves for anything that goes wrong and we're talking about the death of a close family member. Having a war going on, her father was probably out training all the time and Sokka could've easily followed to train. Katara has her responsibilities to do and barely has an outlet for her grief.
I agree with some of what you said but I don't agree with what you said about aang. Aangs race was killed in pursuit of killing the avatar. And then he wasn't even there to help when the fire nation attacked because he was stuck in the iceberg. Who knows what could have happened if aang was there when the fire nation attacked. He could have entered the avatar state etc. It almost feels like you completely forgot about aangs entire character arc of learning to let go of guilt.
What I'm trying to say is that aang is potentially more responsible for the death of his people than Katarras is for the death of her mother. Katarra was a helpless little child who could barely bend while aang was not only a fully fledged airbending master, but he had the power of the avatar state within him. I'm not hating on katarra, she is absolutely a queen, but there's no point in defending her actions in this episode. She was PURPOSEFULLY supposed to come off as a dick during this episode and that's okay
@@MadeByIsmael Yeah, part of Aang's arc is his guilt for leaving, but there's no telling what he could've done or what could've happened. Maybe the Avatar State could've stopped a few sieges or maybe the monks could've just escorted him away again and again, pushing him to master the elements. The war would've been a lot more intense at that time too Also, my post is just a debate from a different point of view. The episode really does demonstrate the irrationality of rage :)
@@pas6789 Actually, irrationality can be explained; we can talk about why the behaviour occurs. However, it is difficult to argue with irrationality. That's why Aang couldn't get through to Katara, even though he has facts and experience
Very interesting. You are the first reactors I’ve seen to partly defend what Katara said to Sokka. And I agree. Yes, what Katara said to Sokka was awful and should have never been said... but I see where she’s coming from. Especially after learning more about Sokka and Katara’s relationship. Sokka confessed to Toph that he can no longer picture his mother’s face. All his life, Katara was the one looking out for him. SHE was the replacement for Sokka’s mother. So while Sokka is sad and angry that his mother was killed, he had someone in his life to replace that loss. But what about Katara? Who is HER new mother figure? Who is there to cook and clean and provide support and empathy to HER? ... There’s no one. By Katara taking up the motherly role at such a young age, she has completely lost her mother. She has BECOME the mother when she was not ready to. While Sokka has forgotten his mother’s face, Katara still remembers it. And so when Katara tells Sokka that he didn’t love her like she did, she’s saying it out of anger, and a misunderstanding on why Sokka doesn’t want revenge for their mother too.
That makes a lot of sense, and could also explain why she was so mad at her father when Sokka was (relatively) fine. Their dad was their last parental figure, not a replacement for their mother but someone to make them feel safe and loved and help them in the ways a parent does, when he left, Sokka still had Katara to mother him, but Katara was stripped of the last paternal figure she had (Not counting Gran Gran because she seemed to be more of a teacher and mentor than a paternal figure). Sokka was effected of course, but he at least had Katara to fall back on.
@M M I read a comment on here that said that's probably why sokka's obsessed with being a Warrior and protecting his tribe. It was the loss of his mother that made him act like that. And I think it's 100% most likely that in the end of the episode when katara forgives zuko she goes off to talk to her brother and fully apologize for what she said and they share a sibling hug
But how? Katara says her mom died/was killed in the first ever intro, and the Southern Air Temple when telling Aang about the Fire Nation's ruthlessness.
What kills me is that Katara's mom was wearing her necklace when she died - this heavily implies that her body was left there and baby Katara saw her. Breaks my heart.
The way I see it, Katara never claimed to love her mother more than Sokka, just differently. The show makes clear that Sokka was always closer with Hakoda, and Katara was always closer with Kya. They had different relationships with their mother, and I think that’s what Katara meant.
Okay I know what Katara said is messed but here is her reasoning: 1. She is still a kid. In fact she is 14 lots of teenagers have said a lot messed up things when they were teenagers. I will admit I said a lot of messed up things too. 2. She saw her mother burned alive when she was 8 YEARS OLD. No normal person will ever recover from that without therapy plus let’s add on that there is a literal war happening and her father leaves just a few years later to fight in that war. That is a lot for anyone to go through and she had to act like mother in her tribe all in a young age. 3. Sokka is not going to get offended because he knows his sister is in a lot of pain and trauma. He knows that she’s hurt and hasn’t expressed that in YEARS bottling up your emotions like that for YEARS is going to make anyone snap. Sokka tries to protect his sister from anymore trauma because he knows Katara has been through enough already. Sokka didn’t see their mother burned alive, Katara did. 4. Aang isn’t going to compare his trauma to Katara because that’s basically saying “Your trauma doesn’t matter because mine is worse” Aang would NEVER do that to Katara because he knows she hurting and he knows she hasn’t been able to express that. Comparing someone’s trauma is messed up because why the hell would you do that!? People have been through their own trauma and you shouldn’t invalidate that by comparing it to someone else’s trauma. It’s messed in my book if you don’t agree you worry me. 5. Katara has literally made fun of Toph for being blind because she was pissed off with her. Katara really isn’t scared to go that low. She has done it before. 6. As friends you know when your friend is hurting and everyone knew Katara is in a lot of pain because she has a lot of anger and blames herself for her mother’s death. Her friends understand her frustration, anger, and pain. I’ve made my case and if you want to debate about let’s debate about it.
People who slam Katara for what she said to Sokka forget how Aang unfairly snapped at Toph, several times. He accused her of letting Appa get taken on purpose, and yelled at her saying they were pretty much better off without her (when Appa was tired and shedding a lot). He and Katara both said things in the heat of the moment that weren't exactly called for, but Katara gets hate. It's just weird to me people are extremely critical of her, specifically, but not the rest of the gaang. I'm not saying it's right to say hurtful things, but it's understandable and a very common thing people do when they're upset and not thinking rationally. You're absolutely right: they're kids. And nobody is perfect, we all have moments where we say or do things we regret.
@BB. Creative Even though sokka wasn't fully hurt I bet in the end of the episode she does apologize to him not with words but with a hug. Him losing his mother in a theory that I saw on here explains why he really wanted to be a Warrior more than just for what his father wanted. He wanted to protect people so They would never lose another parent like he did.
This is the best “Forgivenesses” kids episode out there. Aang is right. We should strive to forgive. Holding onto anger isn’t the right answer. But Katara can’t forgive the guy. He killed her mother, and she’s not wrong to never do so. But more importantly no one judges her for it. He did something unforgivable and the show says it’s ok to not forgive.
They are not saying not forgiving is ok. They are saying you need closure. Closure is more important than forgiveness. Now she can move on and forgive Zuko
@@TheSaxAppeal Funny thing is, only the person who is forgiving can decide that. Given they are the one choosing to forgive, it certainly does bring closure.
What gets me about that Sokka and Suki bit is whatever they were planning on doing, they were planning on doing it near a girl who can SEE THROUGH VIBRATIONS IN THE GROUND. Also Zuko knew what he was doing when he stood outside the tent for an extra few seconds 😂
Mai ranked Zuko above Azula, so Azula wanted to put herself above him in an area that she always has: combat. Because she acts more emotionally than logically, her attack becomes a fiasco. Zuko is up to par with her with his new firebending and he is moving towards her on the airship. Team Avatar escaped and Zuko got help from Katara while she survived by the skin of her teeth. It’s like how the fight at 2x13 went. Aang had help from Momo and Azula had to get on top of the drill by herself. Azula is good by herself but she is great when there’s people with her, helping her out. She took a huge blow in losing people to help her out.
@@yeahkeen2905 I wasn’t talking about her firebending. I meant her decision to strategize and her decision to attack at the Western Air Temple. She wasn’t her usual calculating self. English is not my first language.
Exactly, it's clear she lost herself after that episode, she just can't function, since all her firebending comes from technique, she's still able to keep up at one on one, but the decision to go there to fight them all of a sudden without knowing anything they had in their favor was so pointless coming from her, great analysis
I think their mother's death is also more traumatic for Katara because she found her body along with her father. We know their mother died but we don't know how. The implications are horrifying if you think of the ways a firebender could have killed her. For a child that must have been terrible.
The thing is, you can’t always forgive, but sometimes you just need closure, katara’s journey shows this, she doesn’t forgive him, but she does accept what happened
This is my favourite episode in all of media and the scene were katara forgives zuko is one of my favourite moments in the show also that scene on the blimp is proof that zuko and azula are equally matched
@@petertracycarroll lmfao it's very clear after Mai and Ty Lee betray her that Azula is unhinged. She goes full loco during the finale. The voice acting and lines are the cue.
@@petertracycarroll yes...but notice i said unhinged... not full on crazy. she's unhinged from the moment mai tells her she miscalculated in the boiling rock part 2 episode...She's actually out of her mind during Sozin's comet. As i said Zuko only matches Azula equally when she was unhinged (before finale) and only really beat her 1 on 1 when she was truly out her her right mind (finale).
The morning after Zuko interrupted Sokka and Suki''s uhhhh get-together, you can see him crafting a necklace with flowers on it. in other words .... a lei Sokka got lei'd lmao
The idea of Zuko firing a precision shot of fire through a guy’s temporal lobe was chilling and badass, but I imagined it actually playing out, and I feel like it’d look like a moment of foreshadowing that Zuko still has darkness in him.
Anyone else notice that the life changing field trips with Zuko are in the order of least-to-most resistant to Zuko? And the one person who didn’t get a field trip, Toph, was the one who was ready to accept him almost immediately (and had by far the least negative experiences with him)? And every time he goes on a field trip with one person, everyone else trusts him more, making the next trip possible.
i feel like all of the zuko field trips are the other characters having emotional or semi related motives/ characteristics that remind zuko of his past which is helping him grow even more
UA-cam actually suggested this channel because I was watching Avatar Videos, and It’s the most genuine reaction to the Aang Series. I can’t wait for reactions of the Finale! And do continue on Korra as well!
10:52 I don’t think Katara meant that Aang wouldn’t understand her pain, even if Aang thought so too. She knows perfectly well what he’s gone through. I think she meant that he wouldn’t understand her overwhelming desire for revenge, since he’s shown himself to be incredibly forgiving and reluctant to use violence. ... At least, I HOPE that’s what she meant 😅 I also think her words to Sokka happened because she was feeling angry and hurt from Aang comparing her to Jet (which I think was very unfair) and Sokka seeming to agree with him. I hope she apologized for that offscreen later though One thing I really love about this episode is that it teaches us that it’s okay not to forgive people who’ve done terrible things to you, as long as you don’t let your anger at them hold you back and poison your life
And it's not really THAT unfair to compare her to Jet in that moment tbh - Jet's actions were because he was consumed by hatred and revenge. Katara was heading down the same emotional path, if she hadn't had the gaang all this time plus Sokka when they were kids, she may have very well ended up just like Jet.
The best part about the Zuko field trips is that because the Fire Nation was who they had to fight, the whole gang was imbalanced in that they lacked fire. For each of the field trips, each of the characters got an experience that brought out the fire in them. Zuko became like an unintentional therapist for the issues they never resolved. For Sokka, he felt inadequate trying to defend the southern water tribe. He needed to restore his confidence in himself. For Katara, it was that she felt helpless and guilt-ridden over the loss of her mom. She wasn't the helpless little girl. She totally overpowered Yan Ra, and in doing so realized how small he really was. For Aang, it was a fear of power. He feared power for its destructive capability, but learned that it also comes with the power to create. The main exception is Toph. In her case, it was Zuko who needed Toph therapy, which he got during the Ember Island Players when Toph reassured him that Iroh would still be there.
Zuko: I gotta find out who raided ur village in the south Zuko: this might be come as a shock - but I think it was the southern raiders One can tell he's been trained by a military mastermind haha
The line Katara says to Sokka about their mother is the worst she has ever said in the entire show, but I find Zuko's sarcasm to Aang about "the air temple preschool" just as obnoxious knowing that there is no more air temple preschool because Zuko's grandfather massacred all the children there and that the day before, his sister destroyed a good part of one of the remaining air temples.
When they were talking about how to handle Ozai my first thought was 'pull a Dobby' "Dobby never meant to kill Anyone. Dobby only meant to maim or seriously injure"
Technically speaking ember island could be seen as not a filler episode because its all about how the fire nation is using propaganda to make them look better so really its still following along the theme of war throughout the series
15:29 this angle that they chose to draw Katara's face in, shoulda been a dead giveaway that bloodbending is coming cuz the only other person who's face was drawn in this same angle was Hama (back when Hama says "They put me in prison to rot! Along with my brothers and sisters; they deserve the same!")
This show is loaded with so many well done parallels. Kya and Ursa has to be my understated favourite. Also, how hard must it have been for Hakoda to keep being strong for his children after loosing his wife like that.
This is probably one of my favorite episodes in the series overall. It's such a great episode for Katara, and I love that they let her finally deal with the feelings she had about what happened to her mother, and that they didn't shy away from making it dark. It's also a great example of the cycle of revenge too. The only thing I've never really understood or agreed with is the idea/theory that they were looking for Hama or that Kya was killed _because_ of Hama. The timeline just doesn't add up. Kya was killed when Katara was 8, about 6 years before the start of the series. Hama was shown to have escaped when she was still young, middle aged at least, which Gran Gran definitely is not. I feel like if they were looking for her they would have come looking long before that.
I love how you could see the increasing excitement on his face when his girlfriend saw Sokka turn around. Fun Fact about that scene is: The creators don't know how in the world they snuck that into the series. 🤣
That "Then you didn't love her the way I did" line hurts more when you realize sokka can't remember what his mom looks like and that sokka can only see Katara when he tries to remember his mom
To me I’ve always seen the Zutara relationship as Katara is the little sister that Zuko didn’t have. It’s always looked more platonic to me but that’s just my opinion.
I think the best way to talk about Katara in this episode is by saying that this episode was her "avatar state". What I mean is that in this episode Katara is consumed by anger, and sadness, and has no recognition of the safety and well-being of others around her, in the same way that when aang lost appa or found out about his people, he went into the avatar state, and almost hurt everyone around him while consumed by rage and sadness. They both needed to let out their grief, aang had the avatar state to really start that, Katara does no, which is where this episode comes in.
I never noticed before that Katara and Sokka’s mum was called Kya, now I’m getting all emotional about the fact that Katara and Aang named their daughter after her!
10:56 he didn't actually SEE IT though. Yes he saw Monk Gyatso's skeleton, but he wasnt there when his people were attacked. Katara WAS THERE and she saw the soilder with her mom. It's not the same thing. That's like how Superman was TOLD he's the last son of Krypton, vs Bruce Wayne actually SEEEING his parents die right in front of him
not a fair comparison: in Superman's case, Krypton was destroyed by a natural disaster. There was no culprit. In Aang's case, they were attacked, there was a reason behind the attack and he knows that: 1) they were searching for him. 2) There is a culprit ( aka Sozin) 3) it was a violent crime.
I’m not a big shipper guy and honestly you can ship whoever you want with whoever you want. But the Zutara shippers use this episode as evidence for them but really it has one the biggest points on why katara and aang work and why katara and zuko don’t work with one line said by zuko. “You were right about what katara needed” zuko thought he know what katara needed and wanted but at the end realized that he was wrong and that aang from the beginning know exactly what was best for her to get over this trama and grow as a person
Hello there, I am a multi-shipper just to share my insights from my- and several others- understanding during the Southern Raiders. And one of the foremost is that Zuko was not at all imploring Katara to kill Yon Rah. Zuko, offered information to Katara on how to find him, but not once did we see in the story of him goading or encouraging her to kill him. Zuko wanted Katara to have closure and justice-in a manner in which is Katara's decision to make- and he supports her all the way. And yes it was Katara's choice to spare Yon Rah after she saw him as a pathetic shell of a man that he is. He was not worth it anymore. Neither Zuko nor Aang had an influence on her sparing him. If you look at how Katara confronted Yon Rah, the person who was responsible for the biggest trauma of her life, you also see a comparison to how Zuko confronted his Father who was also responsible for the biggest trauma of his life. Zuko had an understanding that closure is necessary to begin healing from long-pent up trauma as he underwent such an experience himself. If you are going to say that Aang was right in the whole debate on what to do with Yon Rah, it's a hard press. Because if it were true, then Katara would have forgiven Yon Rah- which was what Aang kept on telling her to do- which she did not. You can also argue that although Aang was right that violence was not the answer, he was not right in trying to initially dismiss Katara when she wanted to search for Yon Rah by asking her to just forgive. The problem is that people suffer trauma differently than others and she was not thought the monk's way of forgiveness, which Aang kept on stressing. The man who killed her mother is still alive and she was being encouraged to just let it be. Considering her pent up trauma for years, it would not have been healthy for her to just let be and not find any closure.
Can we discuss the theory that it wasn’t Katara they were looking for? She was a child, they wouldn’t have known about her yet. They were looking for someone else from the southern water tribe...someone they knew...someone who escaped...someone who was so powerful they knew they had to kill them and not just capture them...Hama...
At no point did they say the waterbender was a fugitive aka “escaped”. They said a “source” told them there was a bender in the village. I doubt either party decided to verify the benders age. Kya died only 10years ago and Hama had escaped way before that even. For Kya to even fit Hama’s description, she’d have to be only 10years younger than Hama is now, but clearly Hama is GranGran’s age.
Katara “not being used to leading with emotion”? That’s her whole character lol. In many episodes like The Painted Lady, they got into trouble because of her emotions
Hama escaped the fire nation weeks earlier thats the source yan ra was talking about they came back looking for Hama and because Hama was so dangerous they were going to kill her instead of capture her like a normal water bender. Sadly kya assumed they were talking about Katara and gave her life to protect her daughter...
If they were looking for Hama wouldn't they look for a young woman and not an middle-aged one because from the flashbacks when she escaped she was young
@@hlianaa_q Hama was around kataras mothers age a few years older at the time of her escape but Hama escaped to the fire nation instead of returning home

@@markanjelloagrabio7515 ok, even if you’re a Tokka shipper which is fine, please stop :/ Toph is 12, not even a teenager and Sokka is 15-16. This never happened and it’s kinda messed up.
For your argument about him not being on the ship, most commanding officers typically stay on their ships for several tours before they retire/become promoted to admiral, so it’s not unlikely he could’ve been there. Also, kataang for life
I don't get why some people get scandalized when there's any Zutara moment. like when he saves her and hesitates a second everyone is like WHAT IS HE DOING um idk maybe he's still trying to protect her or just waiting for her to thank him, after all this episode is about their relationship and her not even thanking him for saving her life shows she still didn't want to accept him. and the Zutara hug omg that was so cute and appropriateb it was nothing romantic. Girls and boys can be friends.
You can even tell Azula is starting to lose it by the change in her bending style. No more controlled two finger shots, just big wild fire blasts with her fists.
The only thing I didn’t like is how Katara just up and forgot that everyone from the air bending nations died and how Aang reacted when he found out or when he lost Appa. Like he guy knows what he’s talking about.
Mmm I disagree, aang was raised by monk who teach him that all life is sacred, the only moment when aang wants revenge is when he goes in the avatar state and kinda lose control, katara told him that he would understand why she wanted revenge for two reasons, aang didnt grow up whit parents so he doesn't really know and he is against revenge and murder
This Episode is great! The Zutara tension in this is undeniable, Zuko and Katara are the two most emotional people in the whole series which is why i personally believe that aang is a better fit for katara because he balances her out. Nonetheless, I love the zutara dynamic and this episode. I really feel like Katara got the closure she needed and deserved and Zuko supported her with whatever she needed to do because he can relate to her due to him losing his mother too. The way they showed Katara's "dark side" more in this episode and katara bloodbending again, obviously not thinking clearly but just out of pure sadness and anger, this episode is top tier.
@@DarkAttackYT he actually did tell them in the Western Air Temple. If Aang didn't trust Zuko enough, he would have left him in the woods after saving him. Aang did trust him enough that he was willing to offer a hand in friendship.

@@halo3iskewlyay he trusted him enough to offer his hand in friendship, but was indeed cautious enough to keep his distance and guard up to expect the worst. But he did indeed see the good in Zuko to trust him enough to tell him about Kuzon and make the offer.
I always interpreted Katara's "I knew you wouldn't understand" as more of a "You're a pacifist monk and you've been taught to forgive your whole so you don't actually understand WHY I can't" and I think it all boils down to the fact that Katara very much walked in on her burned mother who she'd just talked to 5 min before, whom she left to go find her Dad, whom she maybe could've protected - which Aang does feel as well, but he didn't witness the genocide as much as he was burdened with it. He's also the most emotionally mature member of the Gaang imo and he can manage his emotions and his trauma a lot better than everyone else for most of the series. People always hate on Katara for this but she piles up Survivors Guilt combined with seeing her mother's dead body on the ground and possibly taking the necklace from her body... And then having to grow up sooner than Sokka to play mommy for him on top of that. Then their dad leaves for the war. Sokka may have had time to process the trauma of losing his mom, but Katara didn't because she was too busy keeping everyone together at 5 or 6yo, just like she did in the desert.
It's not a plothole, it was their only lead. They would either find the leader and he was the same, or they would find clues on where he is with the raiders. And yes, in such a case you hope it's still the same person, because it is less work to find him.
"Then you didn't love her like I did!" Remember when Katara overheard Sokka telling Toph he couldn't remember his mom properly. Katara knows this is an insecurity he has and is targeting it
In grief bottled up and expressing, she may have temporarily forget and is truly feeling and running on her emotions. Thinking back in real life especially for a 14 year old, we wont truly remember everything at any specific point in time and coupled that with extreme rage emotion, it is logical to be blinded by it and thus saying based on grief and hurt. #FlawedCharacters It really resembles us in real life as humans which is what I like. It makes me think in real life what I'm did or say that may affect anyone thus apologising for it later on. So this is still justified for Katara being a 14 year old human.
No, that’s completely wrong. Katara lashed out at Sokka because his reaction was so different from hers and she couldn’t understand why in that moment. She didn’t consider the possibility that she might’ve had a much more traumatic experience that day than Sokka did, which of course would lead to him being less angry with the killer. Also, Sokka not remembering his mother’s face was never shown to be an insecurity. I mean, he immediately followed it up with “It really seems like my whole life, Katara’s been the one looking out for me.” So Sokka had Katara as his maternal figure after their mother died, but Katara never had that, and as a result she never truly healed from that incident. Which of course led to her actions in this episode.
Interesting fact Harma learning blood bending and escaping is the reason the fire Nation started killing Southern water benders they were scared all them knew the technique

Ohhh wow, I never thought of that😱🤯
Yes, that makes so much sense! I don’t think it’s out of the picture to say that Hama was the last waterbender taken from the Southern Tribe before Kya’s death. The tribe was already familiar with waterbender imprisonment but they never knew of the horrors Hama committed that would cement Kya’s doom.
I think it goes deeper that they were there looking specifically for Hama.
I had not considered that, but it makes perfect sense. Thank you.

Not something one can just ignore and move on
Did Katara find Kyas body?
Take a moment to appreciate that Katara was the one who caught Zuko when he was falling despite her antagonism towards him. They both saved each other's lives in that opening.

Another reason why katara talks about her mom so much is that yon ra was unarmed so he had to fire bend to kill kya and then when katara came back she had to see her burned dead mother and sokka didn't.
We know he’s a firebender too, we see him bending right before he got ambushed
Yup, she also had a heavy survivor’s guilt, and also the fact that she knew her mother died because of her :(
Plus, its likely that Yon Ra was particularly brutal, considering how he managed to kill her quickly enough that he was out of the house by the time Katara and Hakoda got there. Not to mention it would've been quick and brutal enough to ensure she couldnt fight back (considering he assumed she was a bender). So were probably talking explosion or house fire victim bad.

Fun Fact: The voice actress for Azula also voiced Katara's mom in this episode.
I just replayed that in my head and can’t believe I never noticed. That is definitely Azula’s voice. Holy crap.
I believe she also voiced Roku's wife on their wedding day
ah yes the infamous Grey Delisle a voice of our childhood, she also voiced Daphne from a Scooby doo cartoon, Mandy from Grimm adventures of billy and Mandy and was the voice of Frankie from foster home for imaginary friends
Does Montana know that Katara probably saw her mother burnt because the raider wasn't armed and he's a fire bender.
It’s so sad
She said in this episode when she got back to the tent with hakota, they were both gone. So fortunately I don’t think she saw that
@@Jacob-sr2wd I think she meant gone in both ways as in her mother was dead and the man was gone
@@Jacob-sr2wd gone=dead....
The war would've been a lot more intense at that time too
Also, my post is just a debate from a different point of view. The episode really does demonstrate the irrationality of rage :)
You admitted Katara was irrational in your first sentence. If you admitted it, then there's no explanation.
@@blitzer9981 that’s exactly what I was thinking too! This show is just... too good
@M M I read a comment on here that said that's probably why sokka's obsessed with being a Warrior and protecting his tribe. It was the loss of his mother that made him act like that. And I think it's 100% most likely that in the end of the episode when katara forgives zuko she goes off to talk to her brother and fully apologize for what she said and they share a sibling hug
This is where I figured out why katara’s mom was killed instead of captured! If you follow the time line in avatar you will find it too.

@@finneas9839 Hama just escaped with bloodbending. Waterbenders were seen as too dangerous.
Woa
It's further explained in the 1st episode of season 3 and in the run away. Katara with her relationship with their dad and sokka with their mother
Okay I know what Katara said is messed but here is her reasoning:
No debating necessary. You summed it up perfectly
@@murlocow2996 You have no idea how annoyed I get when people are mad at Katara for being a teenager, like I doubt anyone would handle it any better.
I would be katara's therapist and try and lessen her guilt

She also doesn’t firebend with 2 fingers anymore, it’s aggressive and less precise

That's how I saw it too. She knew he wasn't vengeful like she was feeling in that moment.
I don't think that is what she meant, honestly. I think she intentionally chose her words to hurt Aang and Sokka because she was so angry
And it's not really THAT unfair to compare her to Jet in that moment tbh - Jet's actions were because he was consumed by hatred and revenge. Katara was heading down the same emotional path, if she hadn't had the gaang all this time plus Sokka when they were kids, she may have very well ended up just like Jet.
i’ve been on youtube for 7 years, no other channel has this level of pure happiness, you guys are amazing

Zuko: I gotta find out who raided ur village in the south
Zuko: this might be come as a shock - but I think it was the southern raiders
One can tell he's been trained by a military mastermind haha
Lmaooo I guess they weren't exactly the most creative with naming their military forces 🤣
When they were talking about how to handle Ozai my first thought was 'pull a Dobby'
"Dobby never meant to kill Anyone. Dobby only meant to maim or seriously injure"
I don't know who I feel more sad for: Katara for not having her mother or Yon Rha
for having his.
You feel sad for yon rha?
Lol
There should be an obvious answer but I understand your implications. He def should just fly into space and get away from her vegetarian hate speech.
@@DarkAttackYT I agree, but you can’t help but feel a little sorry for him
Technically speaking ember island could be seen as not a filler episode because its all about how the fire nation is using propaganda to make them look better so really its still following along the theme of war throughout the series
That's when you know that anger is consuming you
Aang and Sokka tries to reason out to Katara but Katara just gives it all back to them..
Fun Fact about that scene is:
The creators don't know how in the world they snuck that into the series. 🤣
Kenny: “The only true filler”
The great divide: “Was that a challenge?”
"Are you challenging me?"
I hate that episode so much
I don't think the great divide was true filler, it did involve Aang doing his avatar duties by uniting the two quarreling tribes
Same tbh
I think the best way to talk about Katara in this episode is by saying that this episode was her "avatar state". What I mean is that in this episode Katara is consumed by anger, and sadness, and has no recognition of the safety and well-being of others around her, in the same way that when aang lost appa or found out about his people, he went into the avatar state, and almost hurt everyone around him while consumed by rage and sadness. They both needed to let out their grief, aang had the avatar state to really start that, Katara does no, which is where this episode comes in.
I love how every time they get sent on a wild goose chase it's to Whale Tail Island

kenny’s 4th wall break: *aggressively stares* 👁👁
I never noticed before that Katara and Sokka’s mum was called Kya, now I’m getting all emotional about the fact that Katara and Aang named their daughter after her!
10:56 he didn't actually SEE IT though. Yes he saw Monk Gyatso's skeleton, but he wasnt there when his people were attacked. Katara WAS THERE and she saw the soilder with her mom. It's not the same thing.
That's like how Superman was TOLD he's the last son of Krypton, vs Bruce Wayne actually SEEEING his parents die right in front of him
Great example for the comparison 👍
not a fair comparison: in Superman's case, Krypton was destroyed by a natural disaster. There was no culprit. In Aang's case, they were attacked, there was a reason behind the attack and he knows that:
1) they were searching for him.
2) There is a culprit ( aka Sozin)
3) it was a violent crime.
“They were seriously about to go to bang time” 🤣🤣😭😭😭
I’m not a big shipper guy and honestly you can ship whoever you want with whoever you want.
Thank you!
@@MrDiplomat180 That last paragraph is excellent!
@@MrDiplomat180 she figured what she needed to do by herself (kind of)
Can we discuss the theory that it wasn’t Katara they were looking for?

Thank you! I knew I couldn't be the only one to think it!
1:51 “the cave…the cave! Remember your failure at the cave!”
Katara “not being used to leading with emotion”? That’s her whole character lol.
In many episodes like The Painted Lady, they got into trouble because of her emotions
Zuko was too focused on helping Katara and Katara was too focused on revenge to think logically about, “what if the guy isn’t in charge anymore”.
Hama was the same age as Gran-Gran so your timeline and theory make no sense
Except she is significantly older so it makes ho sense
@@hlianaa_q Hama was around kataras mothers age a few years older at the time of her escape but Hama escaped to the fire nation instead of returning home

For your argument about him not being on the ship, most commanding officers typically stay on their ships for several tours before they retire/become promoted to admiral, so it’s not unlikely he could’ve been there. Also, kataang for life
The Taco Bell sound when Azula and Zuko’s fists connects has me sitting here dying for 2 minutes before I can continue the episode 😂😂😂😂❤️
Lol I was looking for this 😌
I don't get why some people get scandalized when there's any Zutara moment. like when he saves her and hesitates a second everyone is like WHAT IS HE DOING um idk maybe he's still trying to protect her or just waiting for her to thank him, after all this episode is about their relationship and her not even thanking him for saving her life shows she still didn't want to accept him. and the Zutara hug omg that was so cute and appropriateb it was nothing romantic. Girls and boys can be friends.
Haha, Montana's reaction to Suki and Sokka was soooo adorable.
Well yeah, she obviously wasnt thinking straight and was blindfolded by anger and hatred

The Zutara 4th wall breaks are killing me xD I laughed every damn time

Katara: I was the first person to trust you!
Me: WRONG! It was actually Aang who was the first person to trust Zuko.
Exactly
Yeah u right blue spirit
@@DarkAttackYT he actually did tell them in the Western Air Temple. If Aang didn't trust Zuko enough, he would have left him in the woods after saving him. Aang was cautiously willing to try and reach out to Zuko. He even used his history of being friends with Kuzon as a way of offering a hand in friendship. Aang did trust him enough that he was willing to offer a hand in friendship.
Aang didn't fully trust Zuko he just saw good in him. If he trusted Zuko he would have got burned at the end of Blue Spirit, but he was ready to dodge and get the fuck outta there.
I lost it when Akatsuki theme started lmao
It's not a plothole, it was their only lead. They would either find the leader and he was the same, or they would find clues on where he is with the raiders. And yes, in such a case you hope it's still the same person, because it is less work to find him.
I can't who wait for the episode after this
It’s so cool to watch the video quality increase exponentially from the first avatar reaction to now!

"Then you didn't love her like I did!"
Remember when Katara overheard Sokka telling Toph he couldn't remember his mom properly.
#FlawedCharacters
It really resembles us in real life as humans which is what I like. It makes me think in real life what I'm did or say that may affect anyone thus apologising for it later on.
So this is still justified for Katara being a 14 year old human.
No it’s not. This is literally just her grieving and not being able to express it properly. It’s literally the POINT of this episode.
