Nice methodological fault finding Lee! I have a Toastrack ULA that similarly is perfectly working apart from needing a very high tape input (relative to other ULAs). Not sure if it’s age related, or maybe there was some variability between them when they were made? Anyway, great video - looking forward to seeing more in the next one. 👍
I have another -7 that needed the same tape levels as all the others, it was only the X marked -7 that needed the extra volume. The -7 is supposed to be the best one so I am not sure if this one is slowly failing.
@@leesmithsworkshop have you tried any of the modern replacements? I’ve had good results with Charlie Ingley’s vLA128 and vLA1 (for Interface 1) but I haven’t tried anything aimed at the 48K. I’d love a real ULAplus though (hardware support for more colour palettes) but that’s another story!
@@flatduckrecords I don't have any and I was not able to buy any for a reasonable price. All I could find was in New Zealand and I was annoyed that the web store did not tell you it's location until my £32 ula ended up at £52 with shipping and fees.
Ive tried this card on my +2B. Just always boots to a garbled screen. Its strange as the spectrum works perfectly. Always loads via tape and mp3 via cassette adapter. Ive cleaned and done continuity on the edge connector. Seams okay. I also brought a Dandanator as thought the diag card was faulty. Also does the same thing. Random garbled screen. Any pointers would be so appreciated. Great channel btw. Subbed 👍🏻
Hi! I replaced the membrane on my ZX Spectrum 128k+ "Toastrack" but it doesn't work, just the start screen. Can you please tell me what's wrong? Thank you
I really enjoyed this video. It's very useful you actually shows how the diagnostic cartridge works. Looking forward for more similar videos!
Disturbing nose shot!
Lovely video Lee! Lots of good info. Wonder who the clown was that thought those ULA's were faulty? 🤣
yes I wonder 😁

Have anyone tried the EAR socket to load. Works loads better with the TZX duino. Means you can use jumper 2-3.
That's nuts!

as far as I know it does not work on the +2 models.
@@leesmithsworkshop thanks mate. Tried a ram and ROM diag program loaded through tape. That worked. Probably confirms what you said. Cheers bud 👍🏻
this diagnostic cartrige works with zx spectrum +2 (grey) ?

it's broke.
Good video!
Thank you for watching 😁
ULAs seem to become the weak point of the Spectrum.
Yes and the two I bought cost more than the spectrums they went in.
@@NerdyNEET we have had the Harlequin kits for a while and they also replace the ULA with logic chips.
