It was a long time coming, but I am back in the sub-3 hour marathon club after breaking down the barrier at the Melbourne Marathon.
It was a marathon that almost went 100% to plan.
There were a few little hiccups during the event, which is all explained in the video.
Thanks to everyone who shouted out on course, it was a great lift.
This is my full race recap from the Melbourne Marathon 2022.

Good on you Neil. Been waiting for the recap! Forgot to mention how good the weather was, perfect temp and no wind! Also your 2nd place in the AG! Completely agree with regards to the congestion at the end. The way it was set up had 3hr marathoners (4:15pace) running into 2hr, half marathoners (5:41pace). And it gets worse for a 3:30 marathoner (4:58pace) running into 2:30(7:07pace) half marathoners.
They could start the 21.1k event half an hour later, so you would have run into 90 minute half marathoners running the same pace as you. And there wouldn't be such a different for the other groups either.
Great to meet you in the finish area Stuart. Yeah, I did skip a few things in the recap, but was mindful of how long the video was. I'll touch on those in the next video. Good idea about the half start too. They have to do something, because they was just too crazy with all the congestion. ☺👍
Once again, we’ll done. What a relief! It’s done! It makes achievements like that makes all the hard work worth it.
Thanks, always feels great when a plan comes together, or a goal is reached. Really appreciate all your support.☺👍
Looking forward to your return to the trails

Watching this.
Eating breakfast b4 my marathon
Cheers.☺👍
No mean feat running sub 3 at 56. Hats off to you
Cheers Brian.☺👍
Great run Neil! I did my first mara at age 46 last week at the Melbourne Marathon and finished sub 4 at 3hr 55. Exactly the same problem with running into half marathoner's who by this stage would be walking, often 2 abreast. My pace group also went out faster than I'd like but that's okay, I would have been dropped like a sack of potatoes anyway when we hit the hills near the Shrine. Running into the G will never be tiring and the support along the way was sensational. Can't wait to do another.
Huge congrats Guy, that's a fantastic debut and you should be bloody proud. I'm glad it just wasn't me having a whinge about the congestion, hopefully the organisers can fix for next year. And running into the 'G, just a special way to finish a marathon.👍☺
Congrats on 2:57 at 56years thats exceptional running. Im hoping to drop my 1st one in 4wks at s.c.m , cheers 🎉
Good luck at Sunny Coast mate. Almost taper time. I'll be there, so make sure you shout out if you see me.
Hey Neil, great recap. Glad you did hang around the finish line so us slower runners could catch up. Agree the HM was tough going and even found myself running at 10k pace just to pass or GPS went crazy. Myself, been crook since that Sunday night but tested for covid everyday because I was visiting family in Hamilton and Warragul for the last week but was all clear. Just a bad head cold I think.
Second that, great recap Neil.
The bottlenecks with HM were very difficult - we just need to split both to left and right sides of the road - and make sure all participants understand their 'lanes'.
I fell short on my goal A - getting to goal B felt like an apt reflection of a perfect Melbourne day.
Keen to get closer to both of your times across the finish line gentlemen - it will likely take many more attempts though : - )
Thanks Alan, and hope you are felling better and escaped having Covid. It was great to catch up with you, and hopefully we can sit down and have a coffee or beer at Tarawera.☺👍
Sorry you missed your A goal Bartek and sorry I missed you over the weekend. Splitting the half and full marathoners would make sense, but would probably mean more volunteers stationed on course. But I think we all agree they need to do something to fix it.☺👍
@@runwithwoody I won't be forgetting to hydrate more again!
30min improvement on doing it solo last year will have to do until next one : - )
@@bartekzielinski1645 that's one of the reasons I don't do this goal B, C thing. I think it gives the brain a cop out. I go for my goal time and stick with it. So far it's worked all 5 marathons.
Congratulations on your sub 3! I’m running the half this weekend and loved your insights to the day 😊
Good luck mate. we will be down there. No run for me, but wife is doing the marathon. It's a great day and finishing inside the 'G is fantastic.
Brilliant Neil well done. That’s really poor organisation though that you kept getting caught up in Half Marathon runners.
Thanks Eoin. Yeah, it got hectic, but I'm sure they'll change it next year. 👍😊
The uphill battle towards this sub-3 marathon makes it even more rewarding. Mental fortitude.
Thanks David. It tested me at time, but I got there in the end. 👍☺
Huge congrats Neil. I knew it might take you a few days to post your vid, but couldn't wait to check if you hit your goal and found your result on the MEL Marathon website. Top effort and super pleased for you! Really enjoy your vids, and thanks to some of your earlier ones I've entered the 50km at Tarawera next Feb. Looking forward to watching your prep for the 100km one, and learning from you along the way.
Cheers Paul, really appreciate your support. Tarawera will be an interesting challenge, hope I can give you a tip or two. Good luck with the training and hope to catch up with you in NZ. 👍😊
I guess they'll never eradicate the problem of bumping into half marathon competitors, even I had some issues with them as my 4:30 schedule blew out to 5:00 thanks to groin issues that have plagued me over the last 15 months (but that's 8 down, 2 more for the Spartan singlet).
Not alone in thinking pacers were going quicker than expected, the 4:20 group I assumed were going to gun rather than chip pace at 10km (I was sub 60, first time in a while) because they were going hard as well.
Good to know there were issues of congestion right through the marathoners bumping into the half runners. Let's hope it's changed for next year. I have paced many times and it is a fine line to get it right, but being minutes ahead of time after just 10k is a little bit off. Sure bank some time, but make it seconds, not minutes.☺👍
Congratulations Neil well done and well deserved yes you do inspire us that follow you give us hope that are goals can come through here is to many more of them coming true
Thanks Michael. It's all about consistency and I hope that by showing what I'm doing it may help in some way to helping others achieve their running goals.☺👍
@@runwithwoody I'm sure it will lad well done again 👏
Brilliant work, thanks for the in detail break down. My target is to hit 3:30 before I hit 55 (Just turned 51) seems a long way off when I am stuck with a lung infection! Resting up and then I'll start all over again lol. Keep on keeping on.
Thanks for watching Chris, really appreciate it. Rest up and get healthy before you start back running. Good luck with that goal. Be consistent and patient and I'm sure you will smash it. 👍☺
Mate, inspirational. You’ve given me a lift for my own goal… a sub 3.40. My best was 3.39 in rome at the age of 34. I’m 57 now, and will run my 7th next year in Buenos Aires… a really flat course. Congratulations.
You have got this Shane. That will be a special marathon in Argentina. Be consistent with your training and you will smash that goal. 👍☺
@@runwithwoody cheers mate
Absolutely brilliant Neil !! Seen quite a few fail at there marathons this year (including me 😂 ), well you've done us proud. Sub3 at 56, whereas I don't want to wait that long it's inspiration, a reminder it's doable if nothing else. Ofcourse you've been a great athlete for more than a few years mind ☺
Thanks RTP. Hang in there, we have all had bad races, the next good one is just around the corner. 👍☺
@@runwithwoody I not sure what your first ever marathon time was, but it would interesting if you were able to do a video based on your times progression, say from 4hrs to sub3, and what you did over the years to get there.
Fantastic!
Many thanks, Don.☺👍
Did the work, reaped the reward! Huge congrats on a goal achieved! 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks so much Helen. I really appreciate your support here. You have been a great supporter of the channel and my running journey. 👍☺
Amazing race. Really happy for you. You've really wanted this for a couple of years. Well done. Besides being annoying with combining the racers at the end its just so dangerous. FYI your race description every 5Ks is unbelievable in this video. Really helps us see how you were doing along the way. Keep up the great work
Your support here on the channel, Jonathan has been amazing and I'm so thankful you have come along on this running journey of mine. Plenty of more miles to cover and many event to be done. Good luck to you and your running adventures. 👍☺
huge congratulations for an amazingly strong running Neil. I am watching your channel since the time you were recovering from the ankle break, and you worked so hard all that time...unbelievable achievement to get another sub 3.
Thanks mate. It's been a long and sometimes wild ride, but got there in the end. I have appreciated your support along the way on this running journey. 👍☺
Always inspiring mate..and hope the MM organizers see this, how to make a tough finish even tougher by throwing a few hundred obstacles to run-around😮
Cheers mate. Fingers crossed they get plenty of feedback. If they stick with that set up then over time marathon runners will just give the even the flick.☺👍
Nice wrap up. Awesome mate :)
Cheers mate.☺👍
Thanks for the video Neil. Really pleased for you. Recover well and keep on running.
Cheers Ewen.👍☺
What a run! Big congrats to you Neil. I have only just come across your channel and it's so great watch your journey. I am running my first ever marathon in the new year and watching your videos have really inspired me some more so thank you. And thank you for keeping it real - it never gets easier, you just get better 💪
Thanks Amanda, appreciate your support and kind words. Good luck with your marathon. Be consistent with your training and I'm sure you will crush it.👍☺
Awesome work so happy you did it
Thanks Ash.☺👍
Wow! Congrats Neil. You give us old guys a lot of hope. Would love to go sub-3, but with a PB of 3:13 10 years ago at 45, I think I've got a little bit of work to do. 😢😢
Never say Never, Robert. There is still time to get there, and your time from when you were 45 is much quicker than mine at the same age. 👍☺
Amazing run! It just goes to show the value of consistent training over a long period
I ran my fifth marathon down there as well, came away with a well executed PB off a hip/glute injury interrupted build up (2:47:21). Like you, I was pretty emotional coming in the MCG, soaked it up (a volunteer actually asked if I was ok, and I just said “I’m just happy” 😂)
I had the same issue with the half marathoners, cost me about 30-40seconds as well. I found it a bit disappointing but overall I had a great day
Stephen, that is awesome. You absolutely blitzed it and coming off an injury - just bloody brilliant. Rest up and recover well mate. 👍☺
Great recap and really glad you made your sub 3 hours. You are definitely an inspiration and gives me hope that with hard work and a bit of luck I still could go sub 3. I ran in the marathon, fresh from a calf strain so I took it pretty easy. The crowds of runners was a struggle all morning, but you are right, it got a bit crazy when we linked up with the half. All the best and nice to meet you at the Albert park Parkrun. Paul
It was great to catch up Paul at parkrun. Hope that troublesome calf behaved itself in the marathon. Plenty of time to get that sub-3 mate, get the body healthy and have another crack in 2023. 👍☺
Congratulations Neil. I'm looking forward to your build up to NZ.
Thanks Badger. I'm glad you're looking forward to the NZ build up, it has me a little bit frightened tackling a 100k trail race. But seriously, I have appreciated all your support here on the channel.☺👍
You are such and inspiration. I’m 58 and have not yet giving up on that sub 3 goal 😬
Just keep pushing forward Michael, keep knocking on that door and it will open. Consistency and patience. Good luck. 👍☺
I love this Michael. Don't give up. You're only old when you stop trying. #Grit
Amazing result Neil. Persistence pays off. Great job
Thanks Maurice. 👍☺
Such an inspiration to this 61 year old beginner. Great result Look forward to your 100k
Well done Craig to be a new runner in your 60s. Your running journey has just started and I hope that it brings you as much joy as it has for me.👍☺
Awesome run. Very nice to see you overcome that brief bout of negativity a while back and push through. Age is definitely not getting the best of you! Great inspiration to others.
Thanks Greg. Sometimes the tough periods can make you stronger. Just got to stick at it and keep pushing forward. Thanks for all your support.👍☺
Soooooo awesome mate. Absolutely thrilled for you. Just rewards for your hard work.
Cheers Karl, appreciate your support.👍☺
Well done Neil. I like your channel because you try and explain the ups as well as the downs, and coming through everything and hitting your goal must make it feel even sweeter, I’m sure. Congrats.
Cheers Graydon. I have appreciated all your support along the way here on the channel. It is nice to hit a goal. 👍☺
Well done 👍 New Subscriber 🙂 I am interested in running an Australian Marathon one day and I am also 50 years old with Type 1 Diabetes but I have not given up hope of running a Sub 3 yet. It may have to wait another couple of years almost before my next attempt as currently having to save for Boston 2025 which is my next big one.
Thanks for following along Mark. You are going to love Boston. Still my favourite marathon by far. The atmosphere is just next level. Good luck with the runner .... and the saving!
Yeah I have run NYC, Berlin and London previously and NYC was the best atmosphere on and around the course. It might change come race day but I would just like to try and enjoy Boston taking as much in as I can and getting around relatively comfortably 🙂
Very happy for you Neil, great result for your hard work.
Many thanks, Kevin.👍☺
You're certainly inspiring me, thanks! I've got a tough 50 miler at the end of January, so hoping for some more inspiration with you 100km training. Congrats again on your sub-3.
Thanks Nigel. And good luck with that 50 miler. I'm going to take a couple of weeks before I launch into the 100k preparation. 👍☺
well done Neil fantastic achievement
Thanks Jack. ☺👍
Well done Neil. Amazing consistent dedication.
Many thanks, John. 👍☺
Amazing run 🎉
Thanks Sonny.☺👍
Awesome stuff - top running skills!
Cheers Adam, appreciate that.👍☺
Hi Neil. Great video!! 👍 I enjoyed your recap on the Melbourne Marathon.
How did your shoes go? Did you feel as though you made the right choice?
Your videos are really inspiring!!
Again...Congratulations on getting your Sub 3hr.
Cheers Darren. Shoes were great, will talk a little more about them in the next video, was just mindful that this recap was getting a little long. Hope you are doing well, and keep kicking those running goals.☺👍
Great job! Sounds like you would have shaved a few more minutes off your time if you didn't have to weave between the half-marathoners at the end.
Cheers mate. Not sure about a few minutes, but did cost me some seconds. Thanks for checking out the video. 👍☺
Hi Neil, congrats mate, how do I follow you on Strava
How did you deal with you PF please mate
Cheers Malcolm. Just search for Neil Wood - i'm the one with the runner and duck emojis.☺👍
Not as well as I should have, but rolling and stretching the calves, some dry needling in the calf and using a gold ball and rolling under the foot. But I could have, and should have, done more of it.☺👍
