How To Add Liquid Chlorine To Your Pool?

  • From www.swimmingpo... this video answers an important question about liquid chlorine - what is the best way to add it to the pool? While many people, especially pool industry service professionals, add chlorine to a pool by walking around the perimeter and pouring it in I find that the potential for spilling drops of chlorine on the deck (or yourself) a little high. My preferred method to add liquid chlorine to a pool is to add it (slowly) in front of the deep end return for your pool. If you lack a deep end then I suggest the return closest to where your pump is located as the flow should be strongest in this location.

    Well shit… as a pool guy who’s been running my own pool cleaning business solo for 3 years now, this has been extremely helpful. I had always been pouring it while walking around the perimeter of the pool. Knowing this just changes everything goddamnit lol well glad I know this now.

      Pouring while walking is standard process for pool technicians, but of course you risk splashing the deck, yourself etc. But I would say that walking while pouring is the more effective of the two methods. But slowly pouring in front of deep end return with the pump running at high RPM is a good option also, and easier on the back.

    Hey Steve. Good video but you left out most important safety tip… ALWAYS know the wind direction and position yourself such that the chlorine fumes are carried AWAY from you. Those concentrated vapors when you first open the jug are brutal on the eyes, nose and throat

    I have been adding liquid chlorine in front of the jet with the pump on for years. i slowly put the container of 800ml to 1 liter under the water slowly and let the return jet slowly pull it out and mix it with the water. Also always adding it at the end of the day after the sun is no longer on the pools surface and everyone is finished swimming.

    Yes, set the jug in the water before you open the lid. No matter how carefully you pour, some will always drip down the side of the jug. By putting it in the water, it eliminates splashing and dilutes any chlorine on the outside of the container.

      I always open the lid with it setting on my grill's shelf. 1. This allows me to stay back from the dangerous fumes that always come out. You get a breath of that you will never want to do it again. 2. If the bottle was partially used there will inevitably be a bunch of seal gunk at the top that I like to remove so that I don't pour it into the pool. Now you can put the lid back on and take it over to the pool and do as you said because drips are inevitable. I have natural stone around my pool's edge and a drip would etch it.

    This is my first year owning a pool and I had the same thought when pouring liquid chlorine in. It made sense to me that it would dilute it quickly and not risk damaging the liner.

    I have a heyward cl 220 that is for tablets. It holds about 9 pucks. I pour my 15% cl2 in that, 1 oz. Per 1000 gal, and feed slow, (24 oz. For 24000 gal), every morning. My residual is always between 1 and 1.5 parts per mil. Just have to add baking soda occasionally to keep alkalinity at 100.

    Great tip, but I'm just curious why you should put it in the part closest to the pump if you don't have a deep end.

      It would be likely that this return has greater flow strength than the further ones. Not always, but most builders do not hydraulically balance their systems.

    • @petersalls4083
      @petersalls4083 Рік тому

      @@Swimmingpoolsteve that makes sense. Knowing my builder, 25 years ago, most likely didn't balance the flow.

    Seems like common sense. Glad I was doing it right. I like to hold the bottle in the water so that it o ly drops out an inch or so into the pool and doesnt splash also.

    Also if you just set the chlorine jug in the pool sense chlorine is heavier than water It just comes out without splashing because it’s underwater.

    I've heard people say never pour chemicals in or near the return but I think that's probably mostly for when you add acid? Since your filter collects all the junk and algae it seems almost advantageous to give them a good strong chlorine shock. Plus within a few minutes the pump will be delivering mostly normal water again.

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  Рік тому +3

      A return is where water comes back into the pool. A suction outlet is what would be right before the pump and filter in the system. Never put anything in the suction outlet, almost universally. But in front of a return of pressurized water blowing into the pool is fine to help disperse the chemicals quickly and thoroughly

    • @kevingray8616
      @kevingray8616 4 місяці тому

      Do not do this; especially if you have a heater. The high concentration of chlorine can and will damage sensitive things; especially the metal heat exchanger of a heater. Additionally, pools and HVAC systems use the term "return" the reverse of each other. With an HVAC system it is in reference to the HVAC mechanicals (AC/Heat/etc.) With a pool it is reference to the pool. Thus the return is the water going back into the pool after it has been filtered, heated, chlorinated, etc. So you will pour the chlorine in front of the jets that are sending the return water back to the pool. For pools, don't pour damaging things into the skimmers because that water is headed directly to the mechanicals. (no chlorine, no acid, for example)

    • @Swimmingpoolsteve
      @Swimmingpoolsteve  Рік тому

      Yes completely safe so long as you do not mix scoops or containers or floaters or anything that had old chlorine in it. Never ever mix chlorine types. In the water is ok. Ypu can add calories hypo today and liquid chlorine tomorrow no problem. Just not the same bucket or scoop or same chlorinator.

      Well there's a video of a tech doing a massive green-to-clean pool rescue and he acid washed the pool. His assistant poured the wash along the walls and he stood inside the pool in t-shirt and shorts working with bare hands and feet. He said he does it all the time and it doesn't bother him much - I guess he likes how it exfoliates his feet?

    To avoid splashing, I open the bottle, flip it upside down and into the water. It’s air locked at this point. I then take a drill and pop a hole at the top of the bottle. The chlorine now rushes out with zero splash back. It’s like shotgunning a beer, but for the pool. Haha
