  • Are you thinking of selling your business on your own without an M&A advisor? Have you received an unsolicited offer? How do you say you are "for sale" to your competitors without tipping off your customers/suppliers? In today's video we cover the 5 common mistakes people make when selling their business on their own and dealing direct with a buyer with no M&A advisor involved.
While I strongly recommend you retain some sort of M&A representation to help you deal with the work involved in selling your business (its a lot!), there are sellers that still choose to deal direct with a buyer especially when they receive an unsolicited offer. I frequently receive introductions to these types of prospects that have pursued selling their business alone and have failed to close their deal wasting valuable time and money. The 5 common mistakes are:
    1) Information Overshare - when do you share your confidential information with a buyer vs when do you ask for an offer to make sure they are serious?
    2) Confidentiality Mistakes - do you have the proper documentation and rules of communication in place to protect yourself?
    3) Getting Lost In the Details - Do you have the bandwidth to manage the business while supporting the buyers due diligence? Are you too focused on the details to get the deal done?
    4) Dealing With Too Few Buyers which limits your options.
    5) Not having a clear exit value/business valuation

I don't really give a lot of investing tips. Traditionally, if you are young, holding a greater mix of equities will bode well over the long term. If you dont have the time to research your investments, buying ETFs is also recommended so you dont mess around with stock picking and take on too much individual portfolio risk. In the current inflationary environment, commodity-based investments are bound to do historically better (ie. gold, oil, etc). Hopefully that helps!
