By far the best Barkley coverage. Just the right mix of background, attitude, training, and race coverage. I'm in awe at the smiles and laughter. All of you rock!
@@apothecurio Also “The Race that Eats its Young” is excellent. None of them are excellent enough to make me think about trying to run The Barkley Marathons though 😱
I've watched a lot of barkley docs but this one really gives an eye opener to what is needed to finish. Running multiple marathons in the desert and breaking the records on both the act and pct and the barkley still got him. That's insane. What a good shot at it though.
Tennessee native here. I wanna start by saying im extremely impressed by anyone who even attempts a lap of this. I've been in these mountains hunting and hiking my entire 33 years of life and spring here is a rough time to be out in these hills. To do so coming from a completely different country is crazy impressive. At least im use to the weather, land and conditions here. You can literally go thru 3 seasons in 24 hours here as you kinda see in this video. I've been outside shirtless sweating in the day, have a tornado come that afternoon and the temp drop 50°F and snow start falling. We dont get regular snow here tho really. It's more ice then puffy snow. Now add on top of that physical exhausted from the elevation changes, and sleep deprivation and a time limit while navigating. that's a real recipe for pain. So im very impressed by your first attempt and hope you've now made it
Having found this video 3 years later i am still inspired by what you achieved back then and even more by where you are now. You are one crazy bastard!
What a cracking documentary. And dude, how insanely good are you at running! Also love the fact you come across really humble. And "Sloppy Joe" seems a right good laugh! Good luck on your next adventure. 👍🏻
I am amazed and enthralled by the Barkley. When I was young I used to hike and run the trails there. Never imagined a race! I haven’t been there in years but enjoy watching videoes about the race and those who participate. 🏃♂️🏃♂️
Whenever I think I'm having a hard day on the trail, I think of the Barkeley marathon and its athletes. All of a sudden my difficulties seem like a trivial temporary pain. Great video!
Love the idea that having a climb named after you will just inspire a whole generation of future trail runners. Brilliant film, so much in there to love and applaud.
Congratulations from the future BtW! Your’s is definitely the most compelling story of the race considering what happened in 2022. Going back after that is incredible.
Oh Man!You are so lucky to have a friend and a partner like them and they lucky too to have you!!!We need more people like you!Amazing achievement. If someone, you will do it!Thank you!!!!!!
Wow! what an incredible athlete you are! I remember your name from last year, but did not really know anything about your FKT records at the PCT and AT. Both your wife and Joe provide an incredible support system. I am blown by how humble you are and keep smiling at all hardships; you all three make an awesome team. I hope you are in the race in 2020 and I believe that you can team up with Gary and Grieg and become #16,17,18. - You need to get a sponsor... Solomon, Hoka, NorthFace and the rest, take notice! Btw, what an incredibly well presented film with no fanfare whatsoever. Those of us who have been following the Barkley for years waited for the main 2012-race documentary for 3 years and then waited for Ginger Runner's film on Gary Robbins for 2 years as well. Your film is as professionally made as those and needs to be the feature film in this year's BFC.
An awesome story about an awesome endurance athlete. Your wife and friend are amazing teammates. We cannot do what we do without loving and caring family and friends behind us. Congratulations.
Wonderfully impressive documentary, and an even more outstanding performance at your first Barkley attempt. Your accomplishments are amazing! You, your wife and Joe have such fantastic and positive attitudes. Hope to see another documentary when you finish the Barkley Marathons 2020.
Wow. Very moving, I just love that you didn't try to be anyone but who you are through the experience. You did not let your frustrations get the best of you, you refocused and tried again. Amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Indrukwekkend verhaal hoe je gekomen bent tot je doel, de Barkley marathons. Geen verhaal van zelfverheerlijking maar een gewone vent die een doel wil halen.... respect. Erg inspirerend.
Thankyou for such an amazing film. And huge congratulations on your 2023 finish. These films give such a graphic insight into just how many layers there are to the Barkley.
@@TheAaronthenia Congrats! If you don't mind, what caused you to want to take on something so incredibly difficult? And what lesson did you learn from your journey?
@@ScorpionF1RE_USA I heard about running 100 miles and initially dismissed it as crazy and never can do it. I ran local half marathons for a couple of years prior but I gave myself the goal of completing a 100 mile race. I trained very hard for 8 months to prepare and was successful. I learned from this how important preparation is prior to attempting something like that, albeit at an accelerated training schedule. Mentally preparing yourself, running when you are tired, were all important when training for a 100 mile distance.
Thank you for a fascinating insight into your world. You have so much positivity. Ultimate respect and I hope that if you do return to the Barkley Marathons you fulfill your dream.
What a delightful Barkley report. I love your attitude and perseverance. Thank you for a very entertaining evening of viewing. Congratulations on the FKTs and getting three loops done too!

HEY KAREL , CONGRATS on your Barkley finish this year !!!!! YOU DID IT !!!!!! You may have not won, BUT... In my eyes you are Equally AWESOME sir !!!! I am SOOOOOOO stoked for you !!!
I've been a fan of the Barkley's ever since I learned about them in 2004 -- a professor of mine was a runner back then, and has tried it every year. Good job! Great video!
Great Attempt! It shows that not just the course is the hardest part of the Barkleys, it s also the combination of the weather, the lack of sleep and the difficulty of navigation. I hope you will come back one day and you will finish our unfinished buisness. Until than i wish you all the best in your training, races and other FKT attempts.
Great Doku!!! Amazing to see how hard you (and all the others) try to complete the Barkley...and how incredibly hard it must be, to complete a loop. I can‘t imagine to to this...and moreover it seems impossible to do during the night. Moreover it was totally interesting to see some footage about your PCT/AT FKTs. Kudos to your wife and your buddy for their incredible support! Great to have such people around in life.
I'm a sub-five marathoner, and not only do I have NO thoughts about doing the Barkley, 26.2 now seems somewhat casual and lightweight by comparison. A light day for Karel.
This was so interesting. Thanks for sharing your story. I especially loved the backstory and all the training that explained how absolutely qualified you were to attempt this crazy race.
Having come here from the fantastic documentary about Joe’s first Barkley attempt, this really hammers home how insane the standards for the Barkley Marathons are. The greatest ultra runners in the world get absolutely ruined by what should, on paper, be a relatively short race. Laz has a special mind! So happy you finished it last year, can’t wait to see what the hell happens on the trail this year after 3 finishers…
Such a nice video about purity of running and what it means to us as a humans. Very driven and funny peeps in this video too. Thank you for inspiring the spirit. Peace
Great Documentary! I am a Tennessee native and will be going camping with my family at Frozen Head in Oct 2020. They have no idea I'm taking them to the tower so I can run down and up Rat Jaw and a tour of the prison on another day. Just to be in the place where the giants of endurance events have been.
