It's small, it's compact, it's fun, it's cool, and Robert absolutely loves it. The Fiat 500e was originally a compliance car only available in California, but now Fiat will be mass producing this little gem of a car in Turin, Italy and shipping it globally.
Coming in cheaper than similar sized EVs like the Honda e and the Mini electric, this car delivers a decent range which can easily be increased using the Sherpa mode which suits city driving. The back seat is pretty small, but the boot is surprisingly roomy and it is a beautifully styled car. Robert is clearly impressed with it's efficiency and practicality, which is a little like his new lockdown haircut!

That's Global warming for you...
Actually, I think the haircut looks good.
Yeah. Gives Robert a kind of Walter White vibe.

Yea there is a point in a mans life when radical cuts look better.
And it pays off to not delay that too much.

The Fiats nice & cute, but thanks I’ll stick with my Model S

I’m glad my Patreon dollars are well spent!
More money than sense you mean
I never would have realized that you had a haircut if you didn’t mention it. Lol
I have the Fiat 500 lounge. I love my car. But I’m moving to electric for my next car. This is a good option.
As I often say, the problem is never range anxiety, it's charger anxiety, that few seconds spent hoping the CCS connects properly.
Welp, range and charge time was always my biggest barrier to entry, but you've now added another. Though, I can't wait for an EV to become viable for me, or at least my partner.
@@chakky533 I purchased in 2019, and a lot of the "concerns" I heard about charging have proven to be largely unfounded. I've done some good sized road trips in my Kona EV, mostly on a pretty old/crappy charging network in my province, and so far it's been without any issues. Done 800 km, 1200km, and 1800km trips, and I am planning a 12,000 km road trip (coast to coast) in the summer. IMO I think price is still the main real barrier, in some usage cases EVs can wind up being cost competitive or cheaper than an ICE, but IMO it needs to be clearly and unboundedly cheaper in every use scenario before they really take off, as it is the price stings a bit too much, and I understand why people would still choose an ICE in 2020. I'd say a $5000 price premium for electric is justifiable, as you'd recoup that cost very quickly in fuel and maintenance.
@@0hypnotoad0 out of interest, did you work out what the cost savings were to you on those roadtrips vs the Kona ICE version?
@@shonunezekiel I spent $72 (that's canadian garbage-dollars) on the 1800 km trip, my previous 1200 km trip wound up being more expensive than it should have been because my particular car (Kona EV) suffered a pricing error on Electrify America's charging network (this has been fixed now). In theory, based on the prices I was seeing at some chargers, on a road trip an EV is very marginally cheaper than a very efficient hybrid car. Additionally, a lot of that charging was free at tourism destinations that are trying to attract EV traffic. Now, in practice there's some asterisks on this, most of my annual mileage is done at home or at work, which is VERY cheap (at home), or outright free at some public chargers. I clocked 14,000 km this year and I've spent a grand total of $120 on electricity, but incidentally by sheer luck, a lot of my charging was free this year because I wound up working a jobsite next to a bunch of free level 2 chargers.
Not if you have a Japanese hybrid no charging involved :P
Look forward to the EBarth version!
@Joe Farruggia Seat Curpa EL Born, RWD Hot Hatch. That looks like fun.
With 50+ miles range increase, and a proper charging network, and I'd forgive the lack of a suspension
@Joe Farruggia I don't think thats the case at all really. They know what we want it just hasn't been possible to produce at a price anyone will pay until now. Fiat probably will be behind not because they don't understand what people want but because they haven't done the decade of producing boring EVs yet to then be able to produce fun ones. (not counting the 2013 500e as that was quite blatantly a joke to get around legislation, not a serious project)
@Joe Farruggia You don't know that
@Joe Farruggia Same I hope it lives up to expectation. There is soo much potential.

I've got one of the original Fiat 500e here in Texas. Sure, they weren't sold here, but once they started going off-lease in California, the used cars ended up all over the country. And they were really cheap. Anyway, it is a pity they aren't going to sell the new one here, or at least not that I've heard.

We got one of the off lease 500e cars in Texas about 5 years ago. ..and I saw a new looking used one in town lately. Ours was a bargain @ $7000 and 22000 mi. But this winter has really shown how much the battery has degraded since 2012.
@@tommontgomery2674 how much degrading issue are you having? Thinking of getting one here in CA
The old electric 500 was actually sold in Norway between 2015 and 2017 aswell. They account for just under 1% of all the electric cars on our roads at the moment.
Edit: I realized now, to my surprise that all of them have infact been imported from California.
Yeah.. In the USA all the used Fiat 500e are shipped from California.
Fiat still has a few new ones from 2019 unsold on their website.
I’m on my second fiat 500e now. The first one was 2013, now 2017. It’s an amazing daily commuter with fantastic interior, decent sound, 80 mile range. I love it way more than my ex - Model S, which wasn’t any good for a city.
Well done Fiat! Excellent efficiency.. always thought the 500 was a cool little car.. not for me, but a cool little car! Glad to see they are making it mass production and I hope it sells well! Best little compact EV I've seen.. never been a Mini fan.. GL Fiat! Welcome to the EV world.. now get moving on the rest of your lineup
I know the 500 is a really cool looking car that has sold like hotcakes but it's the practical little Panda that I would love to see with this drivetrain...4 seats with decent headroom and a boot 👍
I think my, Dachshund would love the back seat of this car. Great review, Robert. Good haircut too.

k, you need to do 6:78 not 6.78 for example.
I think there is a conversion problem on the car price as the price in euro is higher than the dollar one when 1€=1,21$ as of right now
Oddly enough the state liable for demanding bringing to market the first generation of FIAT500e - California as all the USA or Canada is not going to get on its markets any of FIAT500e of second generation. The irony of the situation is that to import a car from the USA to Europe is much easier than to bring one from Europe to the USA. For instance most second hand FIAT500e of first generation were sold in Norway while I seriously doubt any car of second generation will end up anywhere in North America unfortunately. Mercedes Benz lobbied the USA Congress in 80ties and managed to pass a law prohibiting gray import of new cars. At that time all were ICEs. Some might argue that the emisdion laws are different accros the pond. However is not feasible to talk about emissions while arguing against new BEV imports from Europe. At this point at the end of 2020 in the USA is only one BEV on sale not yet found in Europe - Tesla Model Y. In Europe though are available dosens of BEVs
I've got a 2017 500e and I really like it. The range increase of this 2nd gen would be nice. Hopefully we will get it in the US one day.
@@michaelbarker1860 Unfortunately FCA needs each and everyone of new FIAT500e to be sold in Europe to avoid heavy fines due to carbon emissions. In the USA there are no incentives for the FCA to sell this cute car unfortunately. There are lots of information online about small EVs sold in California being much better as cars vs their ICE counterparts. That is true about both Smart EV and FIAT500e. So lots of folks are going to miss this car in California. Enjoy your little peppy EV car!
Absolutely love the gen 1 500e. It's actually grey market imported to other parts the U.S. and around the world. really great to see Fiat make a mass-market update.
Why couldn't Honda have decent range like this car?
Same with the Mini Electric
Maybe as technologies moved on a lot more, Honda really was designed a lot earlier did specifically say it's just for short journeys in the city? I think Honda quality will last out over this car
@@Android-vk8yh Yes they said city car. But its too expensive and apparently not selling well. If you want a city car wait for a Chinese one at 1/4 of the price.
@@Android-vk8yh this is a city car too, as all the 500s. And this car’s technology and quality are a lot better than the Honda e, for me, at least.
A shiny suit, and Robert would fit right in in Italy.
Honestly, if you didn't say anything about the hair I wouldn't have noticed.
Really. That whole segment should have been cut.
He's not that bald.
@@MisterClaws Yep, really really strange to have that in there.
@@rngalston I think he was more referring to the fact that it is hair, it's expected to be cut. And if he hadn't have said anything, then nothing would have stood out as unusual
@@MisterClaws I see what you did there 😂
Good vibe in this one, Robert - thanks! And your hair looks much better this way, trust me :-)
I'd probably have this over the Honda or the Mini. Classic styling aside, I like the physical buttons instead of all those darn screens everywhere.
Yes! Why so many screens?
The Mini doesn’t have screens everywhere, does it?
@@CaroAbebe Probably not, but it's expensive and low in range. Was thinking more of the Honda - looks great, but not so practical. I'd prefer the simpler Fiat interior.
Personally, I think it still echoes the original Fiat 500 closely, and has cuteness in spades. The Honda has proportions to an original Austin Mini, and therefore has a higher cuteness factor over the elephantine BMW so-called Mini.
@@ramblerandy2397 Yeah, I'd go with that. I feel somewhat let down by the Honda, because I was hoping that elegant styling would reflect a more minimal interior and cheaper price. All those screens and expense, and lack of range... if the Honda had an interior like the Fiat's, it could have been brilliant.
I like my 500e. Not crazy about the new headlights but I would love this new version. I heard they aren’t selling them in the USA anymore.

This Fiat impresses me a lot. Love the cheeky styling, that particular colour and the "3rd" door. Yes, not a family car, but for a single person it would be awesome. This whole EV market have me all excited. Unfortunately in South Africa the EV market is basically non-existant. With extremely high prices here and a poor electrical infrastructure, chances of the EV market growing here is basically impossible.
Same in Australia - we are so behind 😥
Very exciting!
Fantastic Robert, great to have more options on the road! Really love the styling of this car.
Wondered why you were wearing a hat. .Laughed so much when you told the hair story then took your cap off. Excellent.
It's common for a manufacturer to "include" the high profit options to make up for the high cost of batteries.
I’m digging it. ticks a lot of boxes as the second runaround, or a young single person’s little pride and joy. If you are in the market for that, I think it’s a little star.
Should do well as a rental car too 👍
Second runaround ? someones waving their wealth about, good for you, I'll stick to my lower working class single car then to balance the universe.
@@will4may175 Haha. Sorry, I didn't actually mean me! Just visualising who this would appeal to. What I meant was it's not really a "main" car. Too small and at "nearly 200 miles" range is still kinda on the edge as an only car. But can't deny it's really cute if you can afford/justify it.

When I worked at the auto auction in California saw many of the older 500e come though they went for a few thousand.
One one problem with those cars was the range. 80 miles max new. That doesn’t work except for in city driving. I live 45 miles from the big city so that doesn’t work for me. Now 150 miles that’s much better! But… I live in the states. Dang!

Articulate them! smile/frown.

I know, I would consider the Honda, but the range is comical in todays electric world.
If that Honda had 300 miles it would be on the drive right now or on order. Love the look. The fiat is just not to sound sexist but too girly. Hairdresser and estate agent territory. Great Fiat have stepped up their EV game.

The 500e looks like a great little car. It’s too cute and small for me but I think my daughter would love it.
For those in Canada, Australia, and the EU, 149 Imperial MPG is the equivalent of 1.90 litres per 100 km.
Too bad the 500e isn't available in Canada. We still have a dearth of choices here relative to Europe and elsewhere.
Only thing close in Canada is the Mini electric. But the range is alot less.
You still have a better selection than Australia.
I'm assuming that they will eventually bring out a fiat panda as the cheap and more practical version of this... sort of the reverse of how they did the 500 relaunch
At 16:00 onwards when Robin was talking about space for kids in the back and then described the boot as being spacious I was half expecting him to say "if you've fot 3 kids and one of them is naughty they can fit in the boot!"

Yup. Bedroom eyes. Hmmmmm, what star(s) had those?
You should do a whole episode on dodgy/confusing charger interfaces! OMG, they are all different and are all terrible (at least here in Canada). Unfortunately I think it’s not helping with EV adoption.
That is the overwhelming advantage of Tesla. A comparable network is required for other EV’s to get widespread adoption
In the UK it's not just the charger interfaces, it's the network. You can't just plug and charge, you usually have to subscribe (paying) to the supplier. And that's when you can find a working one. Absurd but true
Absolutely beautiful design in & out.
What a beautiful weekend car with lid down on a nice day. I love it.
Good review...I like it!

Your daughter did very well, she has given you quite a contemporary look...... Keep it like that...
Having just one small, "cute" BEV means you can get away with high prices and a nearly unusable range. Having 3+ small, "cute" BEVs equals competition. From here on out (of the ICE Age) things will only get better. Great video - thanks Robert.
As a Smart ED owner in the states, I would love more small evs in the area.

I have been driving a 2014 500e that I purchased used in Dallas Texas several years back and I absolutely love it. At the time I purchased it they were extremely inexpensive to buy, I was stunned at how little they wanted for such a cool little tricked out car. I drive the wheels off cars, so I don’t intend to replace it anytime soon, but it’s wonderful to see that Fiat has finally gotten serious about supporting EVs.
