  • A drive through the 10 counties that form the The Central Kenya Economic Block (CEKEB) shows a region that is undergoing major infrastructural transformation with mega projects in progress . The construction of the 48 Kilometer Kennol-Marua dual carriage highway at a cost of 14 billion shillings, and the construction of the 540 kilometers of Mau Mau roads at a cost of 30 billion shillings are among flagship projects being witnessed in the block alongside the construction of dams that could see thousands of acres put under irrigation to boost food supply. Our reporter Martin Munene toured some of these projects and filed this report.

      Building roads is easy. Maintaining is a whole different story. America just passed $1.5 trillion bill to maintain roads
      Roads mean nothing if people don't have jobs plus our dependency on China is a liability. Who will maintain them?

    • @bernardkyule2644
      @bernardkyule2644 2 роки тому

      The impact will only be felt if the roads are opening all region of the country. But even if you get tarmack to your house but you can't take your produce to big mkts in time that is outside your region were the demands are high you will never feel the impacts of the so called mega projects.

    • @usejasiri
      @usejasiri 2 роки тому

      Roads should be done by private sector, they do better market research on if there's a need or not and can bring innovations on how to better roads, government won't be able to maintain them

      @@omooshg5257 American roads are very well maintained in most areas. I know that from first hand experience. But after 100 years, some of the infrastructure needs a complete overhaul, not just maintenance. Hence the need for the infrastructure bill. Second, interest rates in the US are less than 1% something unheard of in Kenya. Add to the fact that America can print its own currency with no problem. If Kenya prints money, it has to then use it to buy dollars THEN pay China to build its infrastructure. And finally, in America, the infrastructure work, the equipment, the workers etc will all be Americans. Nothing will be imported like Kenya. In short, the building of infrastructure in the US has little in comparison with the same activity in Kenya.

    Kenyans are funny. You can not have any development be it jobs or growing the economy withiout infrastructure. Infrastructure be it dams, roads, bridges, power stations, rails are the bedrock or foundation of an economy. To build these, you need massive amounts of money that the country can not fianance with its sources of taxation. Currently the taxes we collect are not enough to build these projects. We can not even finance or pay for our current budgets we have to borrow to sustain our budget allocations. So what do you do. Where do you find money. You have to borrow and use these funds to build infrastructre that will pay off the debts in the long term.

When the global economies open up after covid, we will already have the infra in place to spur growth. Infact we need more infra projects. Infra never stops being built. Infra is an ongoing process as economies grow the need for more infra is needed. We still along way to ensure we have adequate infra in areas of sewer systems, water, especially water we need to tap our vast sources of water like Turkana aquifeiers, rivers in western Kenya causing floods, Lake victoria, tana river whereby when it rains people downstream are flooded out.
