      +CXC Tutor Each step is quite simple and logical, and often uses equations we're all familiar with, but the end result can look amazingly complicated. I'm just trying to show that even these weird looking formula aren't always as bad as they first seem.

    can we use this method to overcome gravity and create an effect of zero gravity
    i mean by knowin th wieght of person we produce + charge equal to its weight and it will float like zero gravity

    I'm confused. I just watched another video which says that as the oil drops came down, they lost electrons making them become positively charged. And that the top plate was negative. So the positively charged electron was attracted to the negatively charged top plate. I would appreciate if I can get an explanation for this

      I think you meant "oil drop" instead of "electron" in your second to last sentence. As for your question, I wonder if the discrepancy has to do with the fact that Millikan observed the chamber through an eyepiece, which would have inverted everything from his point of view. This would mean that the bottom plate was in fact negatively charged, only that it appeared to be the top plate as viewed through the eyepiece.

    great video! But does the drag force affect the oil droplet when it is stationary

      no , beacuse it will only be stationary due to the PD. so when it is stationary the weight is equal to the electric field. So no drag involved .

    thank you for this video:) I am still confused about the forces on the oil droplet. If there's drag & gravity, and the droplet reaches terminal velocity (so resultant force = 0), then can we consider the weight acting on it with the Coloumb force?

    Great video, but I would have liked to know why he was getting answers which were multiples of 1.60 instead of just 1.60 flat out

      Its because 1.6 x 10^-19 C is the charge of a single electron ( The smallest quanta of charge). The oil droplets would consist of ionised atoms so some would give values of exactly the elementary charge but others would give larger multiples as more than one electron will have been removed. Thus it would provide multiples of the elementary charge rather than a single electrons charge.

      the voltage used is just right so that the negatively charged oil drop cannot fall since it is attracted by the positively charged top plate, as well as being repelled by the negatively charged bottom plate
