It's interesting how a reason for a character doing what they do can also be closely related to worldbuilding, since characters' actions and motivations can be influenced by what's going on around them in terms of politics, history, factional stuff, etc... (and in the process, their own deeds end up contributing to that world too). I've noticed that sometimes in things like modern script-writing for shows, writers forget that bit, and their characters wind up acting in a bubble, with the outside world rarely affecting them and them rarely affecting their outside world. (Also, I saw your Barbie video a little while back and thought it was really fun. Keep up the good work!)
I agree. I also think a lot of writers just focus on the worldbuilding itself to the point where it becomes gimmicky, rather than focusing on worldbuilding that interacts with their actuals characters and vice versa. I think has some of the best worldbuilding, because everything the characters do is influenced by their history and relationship to the world around them, like you're saying. Wye Oak is so damn good. This is definitely my favorite of the DT novels, though I think you're the first person that I've seen that agrees with me. Every person I know always says Wizard & Glass.
