This is how real enduros are supposed to be run, I used to race all the D36 enduros in the 90's starting with the national season opener the Quicksilver Enduro, it was brutal and so much fun, this type of enduro is becoming rare these days, hosting clubs starting using the AMA new type of Sprint Enduro for the same reasons as the AMA to attract more entries to make more money, which is really all the AMA is interested in as they do nothing for the off road community at all, there are a few easy to follow books out there explaining how the checkpoint system, maintaining average speeds and where possible checkpoints could be, a pre programed computer makes it much easier to focus on riding and not so much time keeping.
