american here. i love hearing opinions on america and the strange culture we have from the perspective of a non american. tipping is one of those unfortunate things that we just accept for what it is and dont really think about it. our cost of living is the highest its ever been by a huge margin and our wages are basically the same nationwide as it was in the early 2000's. we have reached a point where a person making minimum wage cannot afford to live in a studio apartment in most states. instead of demanding our government fix the situation and hold them to it we have decided to supplement the low wages of others out of our own pockets. its a strange place weve found ourselves.

Waiters really are forced to be overly kind (sometimes) and they're paid peanuts "Tipped employees must receive a minimum wage of $2.13 per hour, known as a cash wage. That cash wage is combined with tips to reach the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour." If minimum wage rose at the same rate as inflation since 1968 it would be almost $21.50 an hour. What a much better future we'd be living in.
