    Karyna, glad you enjoyed the show. I was there too, and it was quite an experience. I found people at the show to be really friendly and though Saturday was really, really crowded, they were still friendly - which certainly helps. I was there Friday morning bright and early...what you saw at the Toyooka Craft table were the limited remains of what they opened the show with. You could walk up to their table and see everything they had, but to buy anything, you had to get into a long line. I was in line for 20 minutes and I've heard others that had to wait even longer. The line was necessary to prevent the Toyooka staff from being completely mobbed and overwhelmed. I bought a three-pen wooden rest from them.
    I haven't been to other pen shows, but I've read or seen a lot of recaps of other shows. San Francisco Pen Show is generally acknowledged to be the friendliest big pen show.
    You got a great haul! I had nibs worked on too, and you're so right...having it done right there, with instant feedback and re-touching if needed is wonderful. I have purposely never ordered nib work online because I hate mailing off pens, and most nib meisters have a 6-8 week turnaround time.
    I live in San Francisco and I appreciate you found my city fun and pleasant. Yes, we have some problems now, but the national media has really overhyped the actual situation. Most neighborhoods are not the ones they love to show on the media. Enjoy your haul!

    Wow. Thanks for a wonderful video. Yes, the common adjective to describe the show is "it's overwhelming". I've heard that from many people. I didn't realize that you are an introvert. I think that I am too. Alot of people in this community I believe are also introverts.

    • @KarynaLovesToPlan
      @KarynaLovesToPlan  Рік тому +2

      It definitely was overwhelming, and I took plenty of breaks. I also think that part of being an introvert is that we do enjoy talking to people, but it has to be the right group of people talking about things we are passionate about, not the small talk.

    That Hinze pen is gorgeous, I might be bias as I love pink and purple! SF 2023 was my first pen show and I had a lot of fun as well. I got to try out so many different inks from the ink testing station and finally get to feel the fluffy lining of the Rickshaw sleeve! And of course meeting Drew is the highlight of the show :)

      Oh my gosh...that Hinze pen. Such beautiful colors...and that NIB! Can I just say, I never knew such a thing existed. I really do think that pen was made to have a fancy gold whatchamacallit, in place of the plain silver one. Why else would they make it interchangeable! 😅 I am so happy you took a risk and stepped out of your comfort zone to go to the pen show. It sounds like you had such a good time and really made the most of your time there. I'm so happy for you!

    Thanks for sharing your experience, Karyna! This was very fun to watch. I can't believe your Atelier pen is named after you xD it's definitely your pen ^_^ I felt that pen was not meant for me even though I was eyeing it because it was the one pen from their table that caught my eye!! I'm happy you were able to get it and that no one else bought it while you went on break. I told myself, too, that if my Leonardo was still there on Sunday! I'll get it! Oh and I love your cute baby blue pen pouch that you brought your pens in. Could you tell me where you bought yours? I might like to check out all the designs!

      When I heard you were eyeing that Atelier Lusso pen, I was like 😱. And I kept telling myself that if it wasn't there after my lunch break, it wasn't meant to be. We seem to have the same thought process! And the blue pen pouch is from The Coffee Monsterz Co! She released a limited amount of them for her birthday sale in August.

  • @littleoldemeartistry-marieehi

    Ooh La La, that pen! Stunning. You mentioned the Chicago Pen Show as a possibility in the future. I have been there three times with the first time being right after the pandemic. It seems that more of the vendors are returning after taking a couple years off but it is quite a bit smaller than SF. They have a lot of vintage dealers and about 3 or 4 nibsmiths attending. As far as retailers, Atlas Stationers (its home turf), Vanness, The Federalist, Papier Plume and Lemur Ink attend. It seems that some of the larger independent makers like Hinze and Kanilea have tables. The 3 day pass is very reasonably priced. You are not as likely to see UA-cam fountain pen personalities but I heard that Drew Brown was there after I had left. Charmaine Dulak of Love Charmaine said she was there.

    If you want a crisp line, you should get a crisp italic, but it is very unforgiving. You have to hit the sweet spot and keep the nib flat to the page, or you'll tear the page. Cool so you got your namesake pen.

    This was such a fun video to watch! I've only ever made it to the Ohio Pen Show, so it was a total treat to get to see a West Coast event.
    Beautiful new pens - totally jealous of all that abalone loveliness. And thanks for talking about how your experience with Kirk was. I've never booked a time at a show with him, but I think I might this coming November.
    Oh! If you get the chance to try the Pilot VP EFs again, see if you like it any better with an Iroshizuku ink. Years ago, I picked up the Champagne Decimo EF without trying it first, and I originally felt it was too scratchy, as well. Now, though, any time I ink it up with a really wet ink (like the Iroshizuku inks), I absolutely love it. It still drives me nuts every time I throw a dryer ink in it, but it balances out for me in the end.
    Wonderful video, as always. Thank you for sharing. 😍😍😍

Saturday, I was at the show the whole day. I didn't take any classes (although I am interested in the nib grinding course!) but I found the whole day plenty of time to wander. Great question, Kathy! I chose it because it was cheaper for me to fly to San Francisco from where I am in Canada, versus going all the way to DC. My friend, Carola, was also going to be there and it helped me feel a lot better about it. I chose this one as well because so many people dubbed this pen show as the "fun one", and I agree! I honestly wish I had more time. I've heard some people were there for only a few hours while some were there all three days. And there are so many vendors and lots of people to meet and talk to, that I could have spent all three days just doing multiple trips around the show. But everyone is different. I didn't attend any classes or seminars because I only had the one day and wanted to visit as many vendors as possible. But I agree with Kathleen - I would do all three days if I was doing seminars, too.
