- welcome back friends, to Songs From Home and “Girls Like Me”, a song from my album “Between Here And Gone”…
I remember well being in my early twenties and eating dinner standing up in whatever group house kitchen I was living in…chances are it was saltines and peanut butter, that was the average affordable dinner for a self employed musician/typist/temp office worker.
Some songs are helped along by details that come from memory, while others rely on a mix of imagination and investigation…this one is mostly the former, especially the speaker’s fondness for “summer light”…
That said, it’s been a stunningly gorgeous week here in Virginia- with amazing autumn light- along with a cold weekend; it’s also seasonal and it makes sense to welcome a late October chill. We might even build the season’s first fire tonight; I know a certain dog and kitty would love it.

Today we are making chicken stock for chicken noodle soup, tucking into “The Bass Rock” by Evie Wyld, and looking forward to a long, cold, beautiful walk with the squeaky toy king. White Kitty is sleeping in, exhausted by her photo shoot for this episode’s stories…

Hi there. I just had a yearn today to hear this song live and I ended up back in lockdown covid times. In some ways another era altogether. It was great to listen to songs like this back then with the connectedness we all sought then, and listening now in Oct 23 is still a joy. This ranks in my Top 10 MCC songs alongside 'In my heaven' and 'Goodnight America'. Thanks again.

Hello Mary! In searching UA-cam for a certain female saxaphonist, I stumbled into Sina, an awesome 22 year old drummer in Germany. Sina does collaborations with young singer/songwriter/musicians all over the world. In one of her projects, Sina produced a video with a young singer named Emily Linge, who did a cover of this song. So, I thought let's find Mary and see her version. My point in all this, is that it is a joy that young singers & musicians all over the world are covering the music I grew up with from the 60s and beyond and found you! Emily sings like an angel & plays piano. Her version of Girls Like Me is very beautiful. Clearly, she & I love your music and who wouldn't? You are a treasure! Thank you and God bless you. Playing some of your older lps this evening and this song also came up along with "grand central" and "ideas are like stars". We are about to shut down again for 3rd time tomorrow with covid variants out of control with under 50 yr olds filling icus. Looking for hope in the world as we are standing oñ the edge I am afraid. I have always loved that song even though I'm a man. I married a girl like that 47 years ago and we are still strong to this day. Wrapping up from covid19 and it is almost gone. This is now November 15th 2021....Thanksgiving is 10 days away and guess what....we're still wearing masks. The only binge series I am interested in are the Songs From Home. This is number 42 and I'm afraid at some number it will come to an end. I keep going back and watching them over and over just to slow down and turn back time. Do you like subtitles? There is a movie called A Man Called Ove. Not a series, a Swedish movie. It has everything...happy, funny, sad.

I have to thank you for being the soundtrack of my life-have been listening since the early ‘90s You have been with me through falling in love, getting married, and divorce. Actually had tickets to two of your concerts in Aug., one in Maine and one in MA. Hopefully will see you again in person.
As for bingeing-found a newer series on the epix channel (comcast ?). It is called Brittania. Season 2 is ongoing.
