I think I have watched this video 4 or 5 times now because we fished the west Walker a hundred times or more...but never in November. You are dedicated amigo! Slipping and falling with a bad knee but you still bring in some nice rainbows! Congratulations on the reward for your hard work!
Thanks. I really want to get back on that river but there is so much snow everywhere I'm worried about what the banks would be like. Now with the evening lows dropping so much ice on the river is a Factor too. If I fish closer to Walker and out of the shaded canyon it might be a lot clearer. I'll give it a shot before too long. Cold doesn't scare me away!
I had to break it out! I had no choice! I fished there a few weeks back for my Patreon and it was low but not like this. When I was fishing then I was wishing I had my fly rod for a couple of spots. This time I needed it for most spots!
Thanks. I was worried when I saw how low it was. Once I got into fishing and was able to check out what was going on I was glad to be able to put together a working formula.
Right on. I have a bunch of clips on my trout fishing tips playlist that might help you on your journey into trout fishing. Some of those clips will provide you with a base of info and then I go into variations of certain fishing approaches in my fishing videos on my channel playlists showing backcountry fishing, river fishing, lake fishing, etc. Stick with it and you'll be slaying them in no time.
My knee is fine. I worked on it the prior 4 days. It was bad the night I strained it and it improved with each passing day. It's just a little sore now but will probably be pain free in the next day or so.
That took a lot of maneuvering! I wasn't sure when I saw how low that water was. I wish I brought some small panther martin or mepps spinners because those would have been perfect. Luckily, I figured out some working formulas with the stuff I had on me. I'm sure you've noticed, I'm rarely fully prepared! I always wish I had something I left at home!
@@wildernesswithamani1027 I don't know why you worry about what you didn't bring...you almost always do pretty good. You always seem to figure out something that will work!
That’s some scrappy fishing. The things you do to catch fish for us. Way to show us how to do it. I don’t want to fish when it is in the twenties either.
Fishing a river in the 20's is something I'll do if I feel I need to. Short of that, give me the comfortable 30's and 40's. I was sorry I didn't bring any small spinners for these low conditions but I threw everything I had at them and it worked out.
Yeah, that is below the bridge but upstream from the regional park near Walker. A lot of good water to fish there. I I'll take cold over the heat any day! Especially in rattlesnake territory!
Right on. That pretty much sums it up. There was a time years back when I was eager to fish and camp down into single digit temps. That range of tolerance is slowly ticking up as the years pass.
Exactly the reason why I have always tried my best to sneak up to the stream with as low a profile as possible. I have caught some absolutely massive fish that were sitting right at/under the bank, and below the rocks that I would have stepped on to cast from as a kid. Learned this one the hard way at 10 years old on a high country step-across creek with a 28"+ brown sitting right under the cut bank. Hands and knees is the way to go for me on a high meadow stream with grassy banks. It is astounding how well simple footfalls will carry through even soft ground if you do not make a stealthy approach. Hope this helps someone out there. Tight lines.
Yeah, I saw that. The tough thing about that spot is the steep bank is right above the river. You'll see in past clips for the West Walker on my river fishing playlist I hit big trout in this spot casting from the side of the road and then run down to the water no net them. It's the only way not to spook them. In this occasion, I saw fish dart for cover as I crouched on the road because the water was so low. I decided my best approach would be to come down beyond the end of that stretch and then make a long cast to where the water ran in and then work it through. By the time I got down there, I got the sense that it was already over. Once I moved downstream and could sneak up on a more level approach it was one after another.
Nothing worse than trying to balance on head sized boulders covered with ice! That water is really low. I didn't know the W Walker got that low. Nice fish!
It's the river rocks that are big enough to look stable but roll as you step on them as you climb up an embankment that get you. The thin sheets of ice on some of them are no picnic either! My knees are in decent shape but stuff like this can change that in a hurry.
Man, that river was low. I was worried about getting something for a minute there. I wish I brought a small spinner. A little panther martin or mepps would have been good.
There is water to fish below Topaz lake there is a canal that goes to the river seems deep. On opening day 30 years ago had massive brown follow my streamer below a bridge in Walker.
Walker Lake use to have trout in it, never fished it. The Lahotan in Pyramid system or Kirman seem weak. The Lahotan in Walker seem strong. So it could be subspecies but probably reintroduced. If I remember right Lahotan were thought to be extinct, but were found in a private pond of a rancher.
Right on. I think I saw that canal system below topaz you are talking about. I still haven't fished the Walker near and below that regional park just upstream from town. I am definitely going to take a shot at that some day.
@@wildernesswithamani1027 I kayaked 20-times in October at Topaz Lake proper. I watched twice NDOW dumping 5,000-large trout in the lake. Awesome day for such low water! Love that you broke the fly fishing rod out of hibernation.

Thanks. It's getting better. Now it's just sore and the sharp pain is gone. It'll be better in a couple of days.
Outstanding number of fish for cold weather. Great job ! Awesome video.
Thank you. The cold was fine. It was the low flow that was killing me!
Killing it in that very low West Walker River.
Nice work again Amani. 👍

you are nuts to be climbing down that rocky embankment with that snow and Ice. You may need a knee brace next. At least you caught some nice fish.

I always wanted to kayak that stretch, but too old now I guesd. Exremely continous. You don't want to go out of the boat here cause it don;t stop.
When it's raging you would certainly deal with some serious boulders and white water. I'm good on the bank!

Neither did I! I saw how low it was and I immediately knew I had some figuring out to do. Some of that ice is so thin it's practically invisible!
I have worn out knees from years of Racquetball so those rocks would kill me.
