This presentation seems to be nothing more than a watered-down regurgitation of Matt Blaze’s two-part P25 presentations “Why Special Agent Johnny Still Can’t Encrypt” from DEFCON (2010 I think?) and a recent Shmoocon. Barely any original thought has gone into it, and the only thing it seems to bring are elementary insults/jokes about the intelligence of some cops through a few barely audible/out of context recordings, and poking fun at the person on RadioReference that’s trying to talk some common sense into you (you say we should fear LLE, yet you’re driving agencies right into the arms of LLE and full-time TG encryption by passing off a decade-old attack as something new/scary while providing the means for unskilled tools with a cheap smartphone to listen in to the live streams, [at least until they encrypt thanks to the streaming for the masses]).
It’s a bit perplexing that this made it into a Defcon presentation when no new attacks or methodologies are shown (UID/radio ID alerts have been a thing in SDRTrunk and other apps for a while), and other people’s discoveries and presentations were not cited. I guess DSD was mentioned, but that’s about it.

I think if the same thing is still happening it's fine to present it again especially after 13 years

@@thewhitefalcon8539Plenty of agencies are still using analog radios too. Do we still have people from the 80s using analog scanners going “TeEhEe I cAn hEaR tHeM”. It’s just frustrating that these people are acting like they’re discovering something profound when they’re just copying something from 10 years ago.

Security by obscurity does not work. Those cops are pwned until they go to LLE. Don't think for a second that someone like me isn't quietly recording _everything_. I respect nothing less than hard, multilayer encryption.

The best presentations always bring out the trolls. I'm glad he did this, and I hope more people start collecting cop comms in their cities. Take data on _everything_ so they have nowhere to hide.
People think those cops "protect and serve" but they actually "isolate and eradicate." It is politics because they made it political.

As law enforcement would tell you, if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear. Any ethical cop would have no qualms with you hearing their radio traffic (assuming you don't interfere with their legal operations).
And if you did that, that's a crime they should arrest you for. Citizen protectors need to uphold the law too.

This is nothing new, and a bit boring at this point. Link-layer metadata collection of P25 (and other digital radio modes) has been known and HEAVILY discussed since like before 2010 with a DEFCON talk on P25 security at DEFCON 20, and even back in 2019 at SHMOOCON.
I don’t understand why this topic keeps coming back up after so many years as some new/novel concept, but it’s stale information and is only serving to push more and more areas to adopt full-time encryption and LLE.

They play music so that social media will often automatically copyright strike those recordings. So they’re not stupid which I guess you think they are

i would say this is worthless content, but it might actually be worse than worthless, putting all the wrong eyes on the information that doesn't matter and overhyping things for pure scare factor... delete

Everything about this talk is good except for the factually inaccurate report that the Georgia police dispatched officers to kill someone. You’re talking about an armed perp and the record not this interaction is pretty clear. It’s pretty bad when someone like myself who hates cops has to leave a comment to stick up for them because the retelling is so far off reality. I legitimately only saw this take on violent extremist channels and a few “journalists” Twitter. (ie hardcore partisan hacks)
