NASA’s New Horizons Mission to Pluto

- How did a team of explorers become the first people in history to capture images of Pluto’s surface in 2015?
DCODE the amazing journey of the New Horizons mission, in this fascinating 2016 series - Space’s Deepest Secrets. - Наука та технологія
I think the most fascinating part of this mission is just how far away Pluto is. They launched this thing on a rocket so fast that it reached the moon’s orbit in 9 hours, Jupiter in about a year, and it STILL took 9 years to get there!
I can't express my excitement over New Horizons later stages. As a boy who cut his teeth on reports from the Mariner missions, every step in the exploration of the Sol system has captured my imagination. Even as a child I knew we'd never have the biggest answers of extra-solar life, but the promise in the discovery of earthlike planets around other stars has been the crowning thrill of a lifetime.
Our current definition of what constitutes a planet is too small for what we will find in this galaxy....specifically, the IAU's 2006 rather arbitrary determination that a planet needs to clear its orbit of other bodies will, in time, prove itself dunsel in the face of discoveries in extrasolar systems. It's a short-time fad...a semantic glich. It will not stand any broad test of time.
Pluto isn't defined as a planet at this moment, but it has been for far longer than it hasn't. It will be again within the lifetimes of some reading this.
I also heard that it took into jupiters orbit and took 4 years off the destination time then took neptunes orbit and knocked 7 years off, the whole landing was actually set to land in 2026-2027 but luckily it did what it did and knock 11 years off it’s track. It’s crazy too. If you really think about it when we look through a telescope to a planet in a whole other solar system, when your looking at it, it could possibly be from millions to billions of years ago. In other words if a alien was looking into a telescope at our planet right now, they would be seeing the dinosaurs not us! It’s really cool to actually think about!
@@RavxnTV This is crazy information - blew my mind that they used other planet's orbits to help it move. The concept of orbits are just so crazy to my little mind, but im glad it's there to exist and help us make some sense of these vastness we're in.
they also sling shot the satellite to the planet
Pluto is Geologically active with an Atmosphere and multiple moons, I think it should be reinstated as a Planet. Period.
Legit. The fact that it has any sign of geological activity is huge. Should for sure be a planet again.
Periodt. UwU
I agree and many scientists still call pluto a planet.
Plus in the category of "Dwarf Planet" Pluto is the only one of it's kind. No others are even close to being as awesome as Pluto. Poor Kid, those nasty Euro's had to take it down a peg! (half-joking).
It's more planet than some of the gas giants. At least one would be able to land on pluto, enjoy the terrain, look up at the moon, visit a volcano and go visit some glaciers. Can you do that on Jupiter or Saturn? I dont think so...
Those series remind me of the old good Discovery Channel, that marked me a lot on my childhood. Now is all about naked people on TV and other weird things. What a decadence.

I got extremely lucky that I got to see this launch. To this day its the only rocket launch I have ever seen. I can remember that week the launch was scrubbed twice. It was not our intention to see it launch. I was 13 at Disney World throwing a fit because I didn't want to go into a shop (I was tired from the heat and walking all day), so my parents left my stubborn ass on a bench just outside the shop and I passed out on it. An older lady woke me up saying "that rocket is launching you need to see it". I wish I knew her name so I could thank her today if she is still alive because at that moment I knew thats what I wanted to do! I got lost along the way but now two years at a community college (one more to go for graduation) I'm going to be transferring to attempt to become an aerospace engineer!
You WILL become an aerospace engineer.

My best documentary! Revisited it a couple of times!
Do you know why New Horizons takes the form of a yellow triangular prism, with a short RTG and a shield-like antenna?
"The lighter, the faster."
A triangle has the least area of all polygons, for it is the simplest form of polygons. No diagonals. Lesser area, lesser mass.
The yellow wrap surrounding the craft is a thermal blanket, which is used to insulate the craft from the freezing cold of deep space.
A short RTG is present because the probe's initial objective is exploration of the Kuiper belt, and Pluto. It is not designed for interplanetary or interstellar activities, like the Voyagers.
The antenna is shield-like so that data can easily be found on a very small space probe the size of a grand piano.
The little circle on the other face of the prism is a connector to the rocket. It is the only instrument used for contact between the probe and the launch vehicle.
----
These are the major parts of the spacecraft. The instruments are small, some the size of a phone.
No but Brad castleberry has a great Theory

Crazy not calling Pluto a planet!
cause they are retards
@Yo Mama No lol that is a definition we created and we have been wrong multiple times before aka redefining galaxies with the super black hole in the center of it. If a non-symmetrical object with gravity strong enough to support dwarf planets has a clear orbit around the sun is that non-symmetrical object considered a planet? No because by "our definition" it has to be perfectly symmetrical. Alot of loop holes in these theories.
If it were still to be called a "planet", we'd have to include a metric crap ton of others. Therefor, it remains a dwarf planet.
@@johannndsouza - They aren't "theories". They are "definitions".
It’s not. That’s all fake propaganda. “Pluto” is just a luminary in the sky not a solid sphere not millions of miles away and never been close too

Wooooooooooooow .... just amazing...
How amazing that Pluto has a ❤️..
Having a relatively close and large moon such as Charon could generate tidal forces, which could create some melt water and release gasses from its interior. Small trickles of water from deep within its warmer interior would collect and release bubbles of gas. These would force their way between cracks and trickle out or be released as geysers onto Pluto's surface.
Pluto and Charon are in orbitally fixed position, so Charon cannot generate tidal forces
bloodnovski You mean they're both tidal locked - that Pluto isn,t spinning individually of Charons orbital lock ? I know our moon generates tidal forces on earth and the earth rotates separately from our moons tidal locked side. Perhaps it's that Pluto has another close moon - if that one orbited differently to pluto and Charon, maybe that would generate some tidal forces just enough to disturb Pluto's interior to create some venting. Otherwise, maybe Pluto's system is relatively young and is still cooling internally.
True...if Charon and Pluto rotated seperately, their would be even more volcanos on the surface. I think Charon needs slowed down a little and collide with pluto. Make for a nice sized outpost world. Then we could move another dwarf planet into orbit around pluto within an appropriate time after the charon-Pluto collision would keep the core liquafied and engage it's magnetic field. We would still have to wrap the planet with some type of panels and/or wrap to hold in apmosphere and heat in. We could have a new world to colonize rite here in our solar system.
So why hasn't it happened yet
How did I not hear about any of this....? Oh that's right..
