Good one Ronan..My Dad adored Dev. I remember meeting him as a child. There was a big picture of Dev in our kitchen always looking down on us.

Michael Crowe thank you very much Michael. Eamonn O Cuiv was very accommodating on the day. I asked him to speak about personal experiences and he just rolled into telling the story about driving to the gate and running back. It's interesting to work with people of his experience. As you can imagine I was working with very basic equipment but I think we got something all the same .hope you are well .let me know when your in ennis

The majority of people in Ireland supported the Anglo-Irish Treaty and at their first opportunity to elect teachtai daile that were pro-Treaty they took it. Like Collins, the people of Ireland saw the fledgling Irish Free State as a first step on the road to complete independence from the English Crown. Like Collins, the people of Ireland were realistic in their beliefs of what England would offer to a break-away colony that was one of it's earliest conquests in the 1100's. Like Collins, the people sued for peace. History has proven this to be the best if not most expedient action to gain full independence from the English Parliament. By contrast DeValera defied the will of the people, pulled his anti-Treaty deputies out of Dail Eirieann and followed this up by creating an instability that would lead to ta Civil War. DeValera wanted a Republic - Northern Ireland included. A clearly unrealistic and fanciful - and hugely patriotic course of action. Loyd George had already discussed what Ireland could have with DeValera in the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street in the Summer that preceded the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in December of 1921. Mr Big Ego was sure not to be part of the delegation that would move the Anglo-Irish Treaty forward. Notwithstanding Valera's gallant service and dedication to Irish freedom from colonial tyranny Ireland would have been far better off if he had stayed in America. Ireland would have had more agressive and compromising leadership in the Republic of Ireland in the critical time period between the end of the 2nd World War and the 70's. His inability to compromise, his pure and unrealistic ideals in addition to his lack of worldly experience ( Collins lived in Ireland for several years in his late teens and early twenties. History will view DeValera as too heavily burdened to make progress when he needed to .. too much influence by the Catholic Church etc. etc. etc.
