Im a little confused is Pa Dutch from the Palatine area of Germany or the Swiss area ? Doug can you understand any Swiss. I know its a Nation with many borders and many languages. Is Pa dutch people a mixture of Swiss and German?
Yes and Yes. Our language and culture is a mix of multiple backgrounds: Palatine, Swiss, Alsatian, Hessen, Baden, Schwaben....because all of these people immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1600-1800s. As we settled in south-eastern Pennsylvania, all of us melded. Our language though is mainly influenced by Pfälzisch, since that was the largest percentage of the immigrants. However, the other dialects had influence too as well as the English that we came into contact with.
