Quick story:
My step father was a psychotic drug addict criminal who always noted where the exits were. Between running from the police or someone he robbed seeing him, he always knew where to exit quickly. That said, that behavior rubbed off on me growing up and I note where the exits are in crowded public spaces as well as paying attention or having situational awareness. That served me well in my 20s because i was in a bar/restaurant where a gang style shootout took place and I saw it coming from the parking lot and was out the other side by the time it started.

Agree with most of it but as an avgeek, planes rarely crash (many more people die in car accidents than plane crashes), and when they do it is not usually fatal. If it is, who dies is related to how the plane crashes. Depending on the position the plane is in, the back may actually be worse Ex. Asiana flight 214. If you’re really that paranoid about where to sit in the plane, the middle will probably be the best.

To clear up the confusion about the “3 hours without shelter” it all depends on conditions. On a cool summer you can survive all summer long. In a blizzard at -35° Fahrenheit (-37.2° Celsius) temperatures maybe 7 minutes.
