I dont think people appreciate Hischier enough. 2 years ago hes 1 point less than a ppg (80 in 81). Last year, after 2 points in his first 7 games, he misses a month. When he returns, he plays at over a ppg pace and finishes with 67 points in 71 games. He might not be as dynamic as Jack, but his offense is coming along and hes gonna be around a ppg, it not better as long as hes healthy; on top of being a great defensive forward
Halifax legend 🔥
He is a wonderful player. A great player to have on a team with championship aspirations
People will never appreciate defense in sports enough. It's true for every sport too
a little "iffy" about saying Owen Power went to the NHL right away. He went back to Michigan for the 2021-2022 season, and then signed with Buffalo after Michigan got eliminated from NCAAs, and only played a few games that season. So true, he wasn't in the minors or anything, but he did not spend his entire draft year in the NHL. Other than that, great recap of the #1 overall from the past decade-ish.....always fun to look back, but just makes me feel old.
@@walkingcatastrophy5547 my thoughts exactly
Ekblad is underrated in how he completely switched his playing style due to multiple lower body injuries but found a way to be impactful in the playoffs in a throwback style role a 90s shutdown D
Celebrini's by far the biggest disappointment...he's never even scored a point in the NHL regular season!
Thats not his fault. I blame management! 0 Games Played in the regular season! Terrible. Time for a rebuild
Sharks fan laughing here 😂
Yeah, I’m sad to say Crosby is washed, 0 points. Quite a drop off from 88 points
Bust for sure just like Bedard. No playoff wins
He's done no better in San Jose than Mike Hoffman's first run.
Owen power didn’t get into the nhl right away
While that's true, Shannon's statement was also true since Power signed his ELC and played a handful of games after his NCAA season ended.
@@jonmendelson1104that isn't right away. He played a full NCAA season after he was drafted
@@jonmendelson1104and he was a PPG lol
@@XaviRonaldo0 "I think Erik Johnson's the only one on the board that didn't play in his first eligible season to be a National Hockey League player."
Sure, Power played a full season in the NCAA, but he still ended up playing in the NHL that season, hence me pointing out that both JahPulju's comment and Shannon's statement were true.
@@jonmendelson1104 that's still not immediate. The statement is categorically untrue
I just remember shaking my head when the Oilers chose Yakupov.. After picking up Hall and RNH it seemed pretty obvious that they ought to start working on the back end instead of just picking the shiniest toy again.
It was a defense heavy draft as well. Lot of solid players in a mid quality draft. Reilly, Lindholm would have fit right in. Losing Klefboom hurt along with other poor moves
For a league that preaches about parity there a lot of the same logos on that board. That being said, I am glad there are restrictions on winning the draft lottery now.
Also, had there not been a lockout I would go so far as to say that Ovechkin eclipses Gretzky this season if not already.
Isn't it crazy how the Wings never got a #1 pick when they were absolutely brutal? In fact, they've literally never even moved up in the draft which isn't ideal. lol
@@TheDetonation No Blue Jacket logo up there is crazy too
@@popsietnetn Blue Jackets drafted Rick Nash 1st overall in 2002. So it just missed the board.
Hedman was deffinitely the best pick from the 09 draft
Way best!
Fleury was never the best goalie in the league, but his longevity has been incredible
He won a vezina, a trophy literally given to the best goalie in the league.
Fleury big reason Penguins won in 2009 and 2017. He is also one of the main reasons the Penguins have only won 3 Stanley cups in the Crosby era lol.
@@CactusJackFan Yeah, and he didn't deserve it that year. He certainly was one of the best, but that win was just for the name. Hellebuyck was better.
@@dvon1097 they really leaned on him his rookie season. Maybe too much. I don’t know if that had any longterm effects on his career or not but I remember worrying for him then. He was about the only good player on an awful team until they got Malkin the next draft and Crosby the next.
Fleury is one of the "old schoolers" consistent, long career, near the top all the time...
Crosby and Ovechkin are the exceptions. Both of them not only looked like they were going to be great players, they were top 10 forwards the moment they stepped on NHL ice. It’s fair to include McDavid in that but the point is there is almost always an adjustment and time needed to grow/mature.
I met Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' Older brother at my job a few years ago. Adam is a nice guy Ryan will watch him at Scotia Barn (use to be called 8 Rinks) during the Summer season. Adult Safe Hockey League is the Biggest Recreational Beer League in North America. I would keep the scores run the game time and record on paper plus internet on the laptop or tablet. Been doing it for 12 years and I enjoy it.
Crosby also won 2 Richards!
I just noticed that Colorado Rockies pennant right above the board. Sweetness.
Owen Power spent a year in the NCAA after his draft year. He was not in the NHL right away.
Didn't Power choose to not play in his first eligible season?
Depends what you mean. He opted to return to college, but he signed his ELC and played eight games after his NCAA season ended.
@@jonmendelson1104I don’t think 8 games counts lol
Niko Hischier has quite a steep contest for those Selke awards
He does indeed. I have no reason to think he won’t continue to get better and better though. I believe he can do it eventually. Still so young and already has such a profound impact for the Devils on both sides of the puck.
The day Kane re-aigned with the wings, I got my 88 shirt. Such a cool experience, seeing him on the roundabout Chelios pipeline.
Celebrini in good company.
Mathew’s also won Calder
I only mentioned the Calder if a player hadn't won other major awards.
Kane and crosby were the best prospects out of this whole list, brought the most team success
Don't forget Mackinnon's Ted Lindsey, Calder, and comical Lady Byng
Didn’t Owen Power go back to college for a year before playing in the NHL?
owen power started at michigan his draft year then played 8 games. he didn't start right away
The insanity of the Jackets NEVER having gotten a 1st Overall with how horrible we've been is CRAZY
What this list tells me is that it’s easier to figure out who the best player is is going be in hockey compared to other sports.
9:14 Connor Mcdrinken
Johnson is underrated, did he live up to the hype of a first overall pick? Not really, but he was one of the bright spots on the Avs dcore during the dark days of Avs history. I will forever be grateful to that guy and his smile, was glad he got to hoist the cup before leaving
Wild how many teams aren't on there, and how many teams are on there multiple times
The Rocket Richard Trophy has to be the coolest sounding trophy in sports.
Patrick Kane is a gem
He’s the best 🇺🇸 born player to ever play the game. Even Mike Madano stamped that statement years ago. People say “Matthews is coming for him”, yeah sure. Let’s see Matthews bring 1 Stanley cup to Toronto first.
Its interesting, a lot of those top picks were hits. Not just all-stars but a lot of furute HOFs there.ost
Rick Nash snubbed
0:40 Power went back to college no?
How did you not include your redraft pick? What a bungle! Just giving you shit. I would have liked to see your redraft selection, but you’ve never made a bad video. 😊
holy oilers have 4 1st round picks and cant even win the cup lmao
Hischier,Hughes,Nemec=Toews, Kane and Keith
if anyone needed a reminder for why we hate the oilers...
Damn look at all those Ducks 1st overall picks... oh wait.
Omg the neckline on that Oilers jersey annoys me so much for some reason. Why didn't they join the colors together at the bottom under the NHL shield?
Tavares had the 3rd most goals scored in the 2010s only behind Stamkos and Ovechkin. So he's my underrated.
Overrated I guess Hall. Letdown likely E Johnson.
I want a stat about how many 1st overall picks become point per game scorers over their career or have 100 point seasons
Fleury fell a bit short of those numbers.
Underrated?
Crosby maybe still. Kind of.
Hischier.
McD will probably hit 2,000 points before he’s done, but may not ever win a Cup. Tough league.
MAF is a semi bust so is Crosby who got injured and lost most his prime and more games not played due to injury than almost any other superstar this side of Lindros who is also a semi bust! Most these number one picks are busts with some exceptions which is to be expected for the lottery picks...
Ovie!!!!!
Curious (without looking) how what percentage of these picks won the Calder (caveat since Ovie and Sid came into the league together don’t count it twice)
Crosby never won’t be Calder though, only Ovi. Ovi was drafted a year before but the lock out was next season so he didn’t get to play. So he and Crosby were eligible in the same year for Calder and Ovi beat out Crosby for it
Anaheim has NEVER had a #1 overall pick. They have had some amazing draft picks in the first round, but never a number one. At this point, i would rather see them improve than get a #1 any time soon, but there have been some incredible talents that were just outside of their reach when they were bottom of the league.
Aren't Hischier and Patrick Kane two wildly different types of players? I see zero similarities between them.
That was such a wild comparison too. Makes no sense whatsoever. That’s like comparing Bergeron to Ovechkin.
No Wings. Thanks Ken and NHL.
Power barely qualifies for playing right away......he played 8 games at the end of the season after his finishing his sophomore year at Michigan.
McDavid needs to have the accolades like Crosby and Kane. Anything other than that is a failure for the “best player in the entire world”.
Deep dive
Underrated - it's changed quite a bit since his first 10 years or so..but Crosby doesn't seem to get his just due as one of the very best ever..overrated- tough call Matthews I'd say..with all that talent not to be getting out of a round more often than not
WOOO
I really hope tavares doesn't get into the hall. need to uphold standards.
Overrated - Love EJ as a really good guy but was so happy he went to Philly. I expected a lot more from a him. Clifton blows him out of the water on a nightly basis.
Underrated - I think Power has had a noticeably more offensive-minded play style this year. In 2 games he has 1 goal and 1 post and was involved in many high danger chances. If he keeps on like this I think he could have a great season.
Bedard is the real deal, hoping he continues to beef up and have a long career because hes a lot of fun to watch :)
Don’t believe ekblad is close to overrated objectively speaking. To the contrary, always a forgotten man due to where he’s playing. Once tracked a PPG season, hart conversation, gets hurt badly. Following season even better, almost exact point per game season. Since Maurice took over offence doesn’t seem to be there but he is showing he can defend pretty well and is all around amazing. Cap friendly too.
Must be nice to get a 1st overall draft pick while being the worst team in the NHL.
Auston Matthews won the 2016-2017 Calder trophy as the League's best rookie.
Vancouver Canucks vs CGY
Fleury is a bum... 20+ years in the league and he hasnt even scored a goal
Matthews projected to have a 70 goal season ....... well in his first game he got that 0 covered 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Watching all of the ridiculous payday getters in canada .... I'm really not impressed. Leafs look busted, oilers look laughable, Petterson didn't look like himself.
I know it's only the first game of the season but you gotta demand more from these big money guys. Montreal came out with one goal in mind.... showcase the talent, they definitely did that. Utah too.
I'm really exited to see more zero's from McOverrated and loads of goals going past little baby stewie 🤣
Aaron Ekblad is incredibly underrated
How would you rate him?
No he’s not
@@HYP3DSNIP3RI’d say he’s a good Top 4-2 defenceman, that would have won the Norris had he stayed healthy in 2022
Incredibly injured. If he wasn’t injured half his career he’d be regarded as one of the best defence man of his era, he’s just hurt too often
Depressing.
Ah #1 draft picks.. they instantly make me angry. I'm a Wings fan. We got absolutely screwed by the lottery through our whole rebuild. It's likely the reason this generation of Wings will imo, be mediocre at their best.
4 teams got two #1 overall picks in 22 years. The Oilers went crazy and won 4. That means that 12 of the last 22 1st overall picks went to 5 teams. I hate the draft lottery. If we had a standard draft, the talent would have been dispersed much more evenly than the randomness of the lottery has.
Sabres will never win the cup. Owner is cheap. Internal cap. Locked up C rated players. They wont make playoffs for long time.
Buffalo is terrible
Tavares is the most overrated #1
He had a few impressive individual seasons in junior and rhe show but has never been able to lead his team to anything more.
Yes he won with London but London wa salready the favorite to win before trading for him, he qas preciously on the generals leadinf the league in scoring while they sat at the bottom of the standings and that somd how qas potrayed as a good thing and he's rode that season and the #1 draft pick status his whole career
I don't think Power will ever be a top pairing defenceman. Coke Caudield had more hits than Power last year. Hell, Theo Fleury was a tougher player than Power despite being a foot shorter
Ovi proved hands down he was the best #1 for that decade.
Crosby prob better
@@Ck69420 prob not.
@@Mayor_Of_Eureka17 crosby was better than ovi in every aspect other than maybe goal scoring
@@Ck69420 goal scoring, the hardest and main thing to do. So Ovi is the best at the hardest thing to do in the game. Great. You handed me that W logic pal. Logic, It works wonders in debates. Try it next time...you said maybe goal scoring hahahahaha tell me you don't watch hockey without telling me son. Move on please. This isn't working out as you planned
@@Ck69420crosby only better at secondary assists
