She was suffering from the “twisties”, which if you’re in gymnastics know the condition is similar to having vertigo when doing flips. This makes the athlete not know where they are in the air and making landing extremely difficult and dangerous. The media should have led with this issue instead of headlining it as simply “mental health”.

I don’t think people on the right give a shit about this chick quitting. I think they have a problem with the utterly predictable reaction from the media and the likes of Big Mama Michelle Obama falling over themselves to praise her as a hero and demonise anyone who would dare disagree.

    • @lostandfound5145

Culture leads to politics, that is why. The culture has become the political. Blame the crazy left for that.
This is a cultural shift in values and therefore it is going to bring up conversations about what is right and what is wrong.
Otherwise, people mainly don’t give a shit what some rich girl does at the Olympics.
We seriously need to push back against the media propping her up as some hero, though. The virtue-less celebrity worship crap has to stop.
There is a culture war and the whole point of the manufactured war (started by the left) is to gain political power. Hence, it is now political.

As conservatives, aren't we "supposed" to be champions of freedom? Then shouldn't we support/defend her freedom to choose to sit out? What difference does it make to us whether she competes or not? Sure, as Americans who want to see our best be out there competing, we're disappointed but at the end of the day it's solely her decision and we have to support her freedom to make that decision. As far as I'm concerned, she doesn't "owe" us an explanation at all. Maybe she should explain to her teammates who count on her to help win the team medal but the rest of the competitions are individual and she owes an explanation to exactly no one.
If she just decides not to compete, then that's enough for me and it should be enough for everyone.

If she is this messed up from a lack of Ritalin, then fine. It is what it is. But I think it's a problem when we are so quick to jump on people. Social media culture is toxic. We are so quick to judge people at their worst and not consider all the things they've done. She is not a hero for dropping out, but maybe she's not some loser either. I mean, her accomplishments kind of prove that she's not. And there is some honor in dropping out if she realized she would cost the team a medal if she continued.

What Simone did wasn't inspirational, no matter how much the people who want to give her a participation medal are trying to frame it as such. She knew she had mental issues that could be problematic during the Olympic competition, and she went ahead anyway, taking a spot away from someone else with a dream to compete in the Olympics. It would've been inspirational had Simone pulled out before the Olympics and began a campaign to bring light to the issues she was facing. However, the timing makes it seem as if she wanted to be on a big stage before doing what she did, and that's pretty darn selfish.

Would they have treated her as a hero for competing even if she knew she couldn’t do it properly? Would they have acknowledged her bravery if she had ended in a wheelchair? Gymnasts do skills that can kill them so withdrawing from a competition even just a few minutes before it starts, shows that she knows her sport and the consequences.
As for citing Moceanu and Strug as references, they were forced by the Karoliys who became famous for hitting and starving their gymnasts and who enabled Larry Nassar to rape hundreds of girls for years, including Simone Biles herself. So maybe not the best references. Especially Moceanu who has been very talkative about the conditions she had to compete in.
So maybe there’s something rotten in the artistic gymnastics world and particularly in the US if the Team Coordinator, who decided everything until 2016 when she retired, allowed such sordid things to happen. And maybe Simone Biles’ decision to withdraw is a way to show that athletes of her caliber don’t have to be treated like little girls and manipulated like puppets, and can assess every situation and make the right decision accordingly. Maybe people could be grateful for all the medals she won between 2013 and 2021 and not judge her on this decision only.

Did Biles even say her health was at risk, they practice these routines all the time you would think for her to say she was mentally unprepared is an excuse to get out of the competition. Jade Carey, the ninth place qualifier, had a chance to compete in the all-around because Biles didn't. MyKayla Skinner was able to compete in the vault. You can perform a certain skill or skills for years and when a terrible fall occurs or you get a mental block for some reason it can be dangerous. We didn’t call it “ the twisties” back in my day but this was common when we were blocked. I once went months with a block on a skill on the beam that I had performed for years. Her case is much more dangerous either the amount of speed and force needed for her skills. It seems the twisties occur with double saltos and twisting skills if I am correct? Vault and floor would be quite dangerous and dismounts on bars. Perhaps her skills on bars too but I’m not sure. She modified skills on beam and still got the bronze. Her work and determination contributed to the gold in Rio and London. Other gymnasts who replaced her were able to win medals they possibly would have not had the opportunity to have if she competed. America still won the silver. As for this bringing down the team snd costing the US the gold- well it is complicated. I do not know if she was in a condition that had her completely blocked or at the ability to modify skills such as what she did with the beam. Performing double saltos and twists were necessary on floor so it was better for her to be replaced for both team USA and herself. I’m guessing bars would be the same situation.

I believe if it came down to it there are many patriots in this country that would fight like hell to defend it if the fight came to our soil. We defend our right to the second amendment and we would defend our families.
It's a shame that more of us haven't stood up by now but I believe we're getting to a tipping point. One day - probably not too far in the future- the weak media and elites (which are the people in this country making us look weak) they're going to push too far and we're finally going to shout, "enough!"
Unfortunately at that point it's likely going to mean civil war. I think the only reason we haven't boiled over to that point yet is because we know that will mean mass casualties (to put it lightly) and I think that the patriots while prepared to do whatever it takes they don't want things to result to that. When the time comes true patriots will rise up and defend our soil, our families, and our rights. God bless America!

I have watched Simon Biles for years. I also have a lot of experience in the sport. I have been saying for months now that the light in her eyes was gone. I knew something was happening on the sidelines because she appeared so empty, even when she was receiving exemplary marks. I was genuinely concerned we might wake up to the media informing us she had taken her own life. When I voiced these concerns out loud, I was accused of being “negative” and unfairly judging a tremendous female athlete of color. I can’t/won’t condemn her for withdrawing herself from this competition. It seems apparent she went through an emotional breakdown upon realizing the immense pressure could permanently damage her mentally and physically. I do agree with those who say she was very brave to publicly address her struggles while still supporting her teammates, in person, while facing so much scrutiny.
That being said, I can not agree with the morbid idea that she is a “Hero” or an “Icon” for her actions. The fact is, she quit out of her own self-interests, even though it was at the expense of her sponsors, teammates, and the country she represents. This isn’t something to be celebrated, nor is it something that should be praised. Rather, it is a lesson to be learned. It reminds us that athletes are just normal people who just so happen to have an extraordinary talent but are still susceptible to falling victim to heavy tensions, just like everyone else. Nothing more, nothing less.

You need to look at this from a different perspective....
Elena Mukhina, the 1978 women's gymnastics World Champion, broke her leg and was not permitted the appropriate time to heal. Soviet gymnastics coaches pressured doctors to remove her cast early so she could start training for the 1980 Olympics.
She protested heavily, as she knew her leg was not properly healed and would not withstand the grueling training regimen typical of her sport. Trainers and coaches dismissed her concerns and forced her to continue her training.
While practicing the Thomas Salto (since banned for being so dangerous), she under-rotated due to her weakened leg, and she landed on her chin. She broke her neck, which rendered her quadriplegic for the rest of her life. She was 20 years old at the time and died at 46.
Reports from Tokyo are that Simone Biles does not trust her own mind and body right now. Given the high level of difficulty (and danger) of the skills she performs, it is asking A LOT to expect her to continue to perform before that self-trust is restored. By pulling out of the team finals, she is listening to her body and her mind and giving herself enough time to heal so she can continue being the bad ass Queen she was meant to be.
Simone is doing what Elena was not permitted to do- be a voice for her own body and mental health. Anybody who would malign Simone for pulling out of the team final (and daring them to settle for the silver medal) should consider how they'd feel if, instead of reading the headline "Simone Biles pulls out of team final", they were greeted with "Simone Biles paralyzed during dismount."
And if you asked the rest of Team USA if they'd rather have a healthy Simone Biles or a gold medal, you know damn well what they'd answer, and they wouldn't have to think for a second.
So anything else being discussed makes no sense. Bottom line is Lebron James does not risk becoming paralyzed by playing if he is "not on" for a game. But Simone Biles does risk SEVERE INJURY if she is not "ON".....Consider that.

Of course she had the right to step away from the pressure and expectations. That’s relatable; it happens to everyone. We all know she is an amazing, world-class athlete and has overcome many difficulties on top of training diligently for years. It’s an entirely different thing to call this specific action of hers courageous. Courage is overcoming obstacles despite knowing you will face hardship or danger along the way. This act is simply not one of courage. In this particular case, Simone did not continue despite her difficulties. Was that the wise thing to do for her own safety and health? That very well may be the case, and she had the right to make that decision. That does not make it courageous. Admitting that you’re “struggling mentally,” while also “prioritizing your well-being over other’s expectations, and bringing light the mental health issues” has nothing to do with courage. No one would call Tom Brady “courageous” for dropping out of the Super Bowl mid-game to focus on his mental health. It may be honesty, it may be humility, but it is not courage.

And the claim that I, or anyone else, willing to criticize your take on her actions can’t do so without being of equal skill to her is absurd on its face. No serious person claims to be more skilled than her at athletics. All they are saying is that this act has incorrectly been deemed “courageous.”

The latter would require her to continue to compete despite her less than ideal conditions in order to at least try to help her team win. I’m not sure why people have to go the extra step and say what she did was courageous, as if we have to cover for some evil or shameful deed she committed.
