  • Adding more advance to the problematic 009 distributor. Test running it in my 73 Super Beetle. I have since installed in my BUG. It works. Just need to double check the operation with a degree adjustable timing light.

sometimes homemade springs work the best when experimenting with a distributor. ive found.its fun to play around with different tensions and lengths to get it exactly how you like it specially when accelerating from a dead stop it makes a big difference thank you for the grinding tip it worked out great for me.

alejandro Yes. I just lucked out. And hit the sweet spot the first time. Gas mileage now sucks. Only because this thing rips! And I don't put around anymore.

So what is the point of this mod? Because you can only run at 32 degrees max advance.. if you go beyond that you are burning holes in pistons, If you are going for lower initial timing you are just going to create a gigantic flat spot from idle to whenever it decides to go full advance...

A standard 009 distributor doesn't have enough advance for a street engine. If you set at the stock setting. You get the dreaded 009 stumble. I like to build my own stuff. And relive the good old days. Of modifying stock parts. But it is just easier to but 050 Petronix clone. That's what I actually put in my customers cars.

How is the Cam retained (up and Down) on the shaft minute 11:22 you simply lift it off. What retains it in operation?

Don't quote this as always true. But the German ones have a circular clip around the tip of the lower shaft.(It's small and a real pain to remove.)
And aftermarket ones have a screw. Hope that helps.

@@ReverseGear I found the screw when I lifted the felt thanks for the mod video when you added retard dis you have to find a shorter spring?

No, But I've thought about finding a stiffer or shorter one. If the spring is wore out. It may not work very well.

OK. How did it work out? I'm always amazed that more attention is not paid to advance curve. Of course most people don't even know what a centrifugal mechanism is anymore. This is the first I've seen on the 009. I think you are on the right track. Did you have to make any other changes? Different spring, two springs? I've also added extra weight with solder or a small weld bead to speed up the advance. This really helps when a lighter spring won't pull it back to base at an idle.
Anyway, I hope to dig into one for my son this week. Looking forward to seeing more on your results.
    Thanks.

Jim King Yes. I think partially luck. On getting it perfect. No spring changes. But it runs really good. Too good. My gas mileage has suffered. But because it's never had this much power. Can't help ripping around in it. I personally wouldn't change the springs. Only because it does good all around. Street and highway driving.

So.how did it work when done

    • @ReverseGear

It worked great. It was cool making my own. But the last Bug I tuned? Well I found out Petronix makes a 050 style electronic distributor ready to go. So I put that on the customer's car.
