The parts for women were played by men to save the women shame. When I was a little girl I was the best actor in the school system. I tried out for Tiny Tim, a Rabbi, Peter Pan, Louis Armstrongs ghost, a catapiller ( male probably) which I received a standing ovation. I was only 5-10 years old. Later I played androgynous roles like the Easter bunny and Leprechaun, magician ( no girl magician in 1975 yet). I'm all woman, and love M. Butterfly even if he was a guy. That would be better.
