Professor I just wanted to say thank you for your years of content. I'm a 40 year old purple belt and have benefited from your advises.

    Thank you for posting, Coach.
It’s a struggle, fending off the law of diminishing returns as we inch along toward the right side of the Bell curve.

This is all true. Learning and progress in any skill is not linear. The learning curve is usually pretty steep at the beginning, then it tapers off and further improvements are harder to come by.

Every single brown and black belt in my academy and most of the purples have something specific they are working on be it a submission, position or sweep or a particular combination of all three. My professor encourages everyone to always put a focus on developing your unique game.

GREAT advice! I went to another gym for a year, and saw little improvement. Went back to my old gym and realized exactly what you're talking about.

Great 👍🏼 stuff - old purple belt - going to research Deliberate Training - sounds consistent with the 70/30 Rule.

365?! Awesome bench, brother! Most guys never hit three plates. That strength must be such an added punch to your already impressive Jiu Jitsu. Impressive!

My strength was a long time ago in my days when I was powerlifting (20s)

When you think about it mathematically, assuming we start from the absolute zero and progress constantly your first training will make you infinitely better, your second 50% better, your 101st session just 1% better. To feel the progress more we can target something we have spent less time on, or a new technique altogether. I think that's also why it's tempting to learn a lot of techniques rather than get the 1% for more fundamental things, the feeling of progress is stronger. Luckily for us white belts we get this infinite progress from 0 every week or 2 by just doing the technique of the day 👍.

That would be a real revolutionary gym; the one where you could roll with yourself from 6 months prior.
