Hello and Welcome !
In this video, I distill my learnings from over 1000 hours of #darkanddarker gameplay and synthesize a system. The goal of that system is to help you overcome the steep learning curve of the game and enable you to be successful in this game on your own terms.
It is chalk full of advice, tips and strategies to greatly increase your enjoyment of the game. Take a look !

Folks, I'm going to hold this spot as an errata for new information and changes !
Big changes to how normal lobbies work : ua-cam.com/users/shortsv8JTNphV3CI
If you are having trouble extracting : ua-cam.com/users/shortsZ0VhCeCVQUA
as @mosesslippers6370 points out, at the bottom of you main screen, you now have a quest log button. It is new as of this update and it's a one stop shop for all things questing.
As a brand new f2p player thank you for this guide. I've watched a couple others but yours is definitely the best one I've seen.
Wow, what a compliment! Thanks for saying that.
I'm very glad you enjoyed it and /or found it useful. Good luck out there, and please feel free to ask any questions you have freely !
That’s true
yes
Same here, very well edited/ informative
Then I also recommend Dimo Complete beginner guide. that was my first and has chapters.
Friendly reminder that:
You can just go to Quest Log on the character main page and accept all quests with one click
Aswell as accept finished quest in that screen
Makes it easier when making new toons
Also, you can throw your torch to aggro, too
This is truth ! Great Comment.
Wait as in monster aggro?
@@timon9193 yes. A thrown torch causes a small amount of damage and will bring the monster to you.
With about 1.2k hours under my belt, i think i can confidently say these tips will help you win about 50% of the fighte you win in normals. The biggest thing i learned is never expect a fair fight
I was just having this conversation on discord. The essence of Dark and Darkers fun, from the pvp perspective, is the occasional asymmetry of it.
You can add that now we have quest log in main screen (bottom right) and can accept all quests once, while also listed in one place
That's a great tip, Koopa's over here keeping it old school.
Love ya Koopa, thank you for being the gentle hand to help guiding our new brothers in arms in the dungeon ☺️
Happy to be here, and I hope it helps someone !
I ran into a newbie barb on a solo dungeon, when i realized he was new i stopped attacking and gave him heals, long story short i helped him out but a bat ended up killing him lmao. Felt so bad cuz i was clearing the way towards an extracto for him, then i saw his body in the floor.
I hope that kindness is returned to you 100 fold.
I got my buddies to play finally and sent them your video, and even as a player who has a decent amount of hours in the game i still found this helpful! Just wanted to comment for the algorithm cause this is the best DaD guide I've seen
Love to hear it my friend. Thanks for roping them into our community.
This is a sweet guide I am glad I was looking in the DnD Discord Content section at 2 in the morning lmao
Glad you found it helpful !
I've got 1350 hours in game. I remember how difficult it was starting out back in playtest 5.
One thing, someone in the comments said "don't trust randoms" I'm going to have to counter that advice. In high roller I agree. In duo and trios I agree. But honestly, I like to see the good in my fellow adventurers. While it's true, you can be betrayed, or used as bait I personally love helping out all the new timmies and I know many of the veteran players do also. Excluding the vast majority of streamers in that comment though.
Heh, I've been questing on my cleric tonight, going into Goblin caves and finding new players I can support to get them to extract :) It's a timmy bloodbath in there.
Wow, how are you not instantly a million subscriber channel..? Incredible content, instant sub
Wow, Thanks for the compliment. Tell your friends about ol' Koopa !
You’ve taught me how to tell people they’re idiots while sounding nice. I’ll never forget you for that. I’m so tired of YT tutorials over focusing on the meta of a game and not the method.
You've hit on something I really tried to emphasize in this system. Meta's are a silly distraction for new players. It's like auditing a 300 level course without any real understanding of the core material. Incrementalism is the shortest path.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le we’ll have to have a chat about this, it’s going to be a big part of my own rebranding. Because there needs to be a differentiation between play styles and their afffect on the communities as a whole and on individual basis
@@orums2606 I have a lot of thoughts on the subject ! As gamers we have this tendency to lean into optimization and chase efficiency to a point of myopic cynicism of any idea, character build or spec even marginally less than meta. If we really let loose, we can optimize the fun out of almost any game or system. I'd love to chat. My discord is linked in the description below, ping me anytime.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le you’ve got a deal. I use the same name everywhere, so if you see “Orums” 9.5/10 it’s me
Thanks for the video Koopa, just started playing this game. You have a great voice as well :)
Hey, thanks! If you have any questions be sure to ask them here or in the Discord, have fun !
I was able to extract finally on my 4th game, and I was so proud of myself 🤣 next game, I got mauled by 4 wolves.
Nice job ! I think the frost caves is several notches higher in difficulty as compared to either Goblin Caves or Crypts. Those wolves are hard to dodge !!
Wish I'd had this video when I started on f2p! Took me weeks to get comfortable with the game.
Love this guide, teaching concepts instead of formulas.
Really glad you like it !
If you’re playing anything other than cleric, warlock, or Druid, you need health potions and bandages. I would highly recommend you ignore his advice on not gathering loot, but he is absolutely correct in saying that you should sell whatever you aren’t wearing when you get back from the dungeon. Put whatever gold you can extract into stockpiling consumables. I typically go with the two torches from the squire, six bandages, and nine health potions. That fills all your equipment slots.
I'm going to stand by my advice here. Two reasons :
Firstly, I think new players staying in base-normal lobbies is the most direct way to achieve the strategic objectives I'm laying out for them, namely the accumulation of game and map knowledge, levels and faction. You can't take meaningful gear into those normal lobbies, it's a distraction from what I feel they should be focused on if they want to power through the steep learning curve.
Secondly, in the context of the Free to Play crowd, at the time of recording, they literally couldn't use that gear. It was completely useless to them. That's changed, somewhat, but I stand by the advice.
I'm hoping to prevent new players from developing two crippling bad habits. Picking up trash gear at the cost of things of real value, and developing gear fear.
You are 100 % right about the potions and bandages. I run a lot of cleric and I still go in with 3 stacks of both. Save those spells and prevent downtime by popping a potion after getting scratched and the total time savings per match will be huge. Plus, meds are cheap, go wild.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le I’m saying that they should collect gear, not to use it, but to sell it so they can get gold to buy potions and bandages and maybe some starting gear if you’re doing something like a warlock with the demon armor perk and you don’t have good options from the squire. I’ll be honest though, I don’t actually know what the best “inventory slot/gold at resale” ratio items are. If picking up stuff you sell to the collector like goblets and bracelets gets more gold, then sure, but I’d rather extract with a full inventory so I can get more supplies for next time.
I strongly agree that a piece of junk gear is better than an empty inventory. In terms of good habbit formation, I'd like new players to focus on treasure items over anything else.
When last I covered the subject, gear followed this rules from a value perspective : Green items 5 gold x slot, blue items 8 gold x slot and epics, 12 gold per slot. I did a ted talk on this subject which I will link here : ua-cam.com/video/oao6w11bfTc/v-deo.html
I hate the sound quality of my old mic, but the math still checks out.
that sounds a bit dark for players not used to a blend of pve and pvp.
you all really deserve such a magnificent game.
It is dark.... and it's going to get darker....
Just a quick little extra tip!
DONT TRUST RANDOMS.
There can and will be many people who will pretend to be friendly but then will betray you the moment they see the opportunity.
And with the new influx of players, these people will be hunting you relentlessly.
It is fine to have a truce with players but do not turn your back on them.
Even people who use voicechat, may seem friendly enough but.. arent always as such.
Good luck
This is true. Also remember that 'old koopa has to run his game with VOIP off, so be sure to crouch at me. I won't hear your pleas :)
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le havent played yet but would it be more advantageous for the players to team up and take on the ai ?
@@niekderooie It certainly is in theory.
Friendly fire is always on, so mind those weapons with large arcing attacks.
Also, the world of Dark and Darker is filled with both hero's and villains. That new friend you made might chose to betray you at a moment's notice. Caution is advised.
Comments like this make it so much harder to be friendly! I found a team of 3, crouched, pulled my torch out, and back-crouch walked towards them while dropping gold. They immediately befriended me and my 3 man team, and we had a 6 man army to clear the dungeon as friends. Was sweet!
So sad, in Hunt Showdown most of them are genuine it's great. I am sad the community here isn't up to the same level of integrity =(
this was one of the clearest most helpful guides ive watched for any game, thank you
What an amazing compliment ! thank you for saying it. I'm glad you are finding it helpful !
What I have done to help me learn was just go through the classes until lvl 20 one at a time. I’ve done fighter, barbarian, ranger, mage, and now rogue in that order. So far the ranger and rogue have been the most fun, the mage was the strongest overall, and man do I miss how the barbarian and fighter can clear the mobs.
Edit: 40 HOURS AND I JUST LEARN SITTING DOWN HEALS YOU?!?!?
It's FUN to learn FUNDEMENTALS ! Sounds like you've taken a grand tour of a lot of the classes. If you had fun on the Rogue, you've already figured out a lot about surviving and avoiding damage from monsters.
If you want to see insane mob clearing, try the warlock next. What they can do to whole rooms of monsters is pretty crazy.
As a new player constantly getting shat on, this was really helpful! keep up the good work man! Subbed
I am very happy to hear it. It's tough out there ! Good fortune to you in your battles to come.
Guy formatted this video like a god damn masters thesis
My dissertation will be included in my next video, Comparative asymmetry of melee attacks in a ranged damage meta.
i have yet to do my first run. was hesitating about investing time in this game. Your video was very well done and motivated me to gave it a shot.
Glad you enjoyed it. If you are anything like me, you'll love it. That being said, it's a game that people either love or see nothing in.

Thank you good sir, just starting to put my first few hours in and this was extremely helpful! Cheers!
Glad it's helpful ! see you in the dungeons !
21 minutes of great advice that will help turn even the most helpless Timmy into a dungeon terror.
Thanks ! Hope you enjoyed it!
Nicely done. My friend and I just started this game over the weekend. Immediately evident we needed to research tips/guides and have been doing so since. TBH, wish I saw this video first. I'm looking forward to the rest of this series when you release it.
Feedback: I appreciate the detail you go into and how you've laid a roadmap out of how to progress. Pretty invaluable to newbies IMO. For your next videos, if you're worried about video length or over explaining things, don't be. I think I speak for all of us when I say we need all the help we can get.
Thanks for the feedback, I hope you and your friend got something out of it.
THE hardest part of making this vidya was fighting back against my latent personality quirk of over-explaining and bloviation. The core of this series is essentially reflecting on my own time with the game, distilling it down to salient points and road mapping to a pace which can both convey significant detail AND be watchable by the standards of modern attention spans. We'll just see what the future has in store.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le "modern attention spans", man I hear that haha. Only thing I can think of to combat that is maybe adding in youtube chapters to your videos if they are longer. Easy for people to jump around to parts they need or easily return to re-watch. Regardless, I think you made probably the best intro video to this game anyone could ask for. I already posted this in my Discord for my buddies to check out so ty!
@@Vigotehbutch Glad to hear it and it's a great suggestion regarding Chapters. UA-cam reserves that feature to a subscriber threshold, I just hit. Look for them in the future!
That’s so funny. One of my first runs as a new player, I encountered another person and they seemed just as afraid of me as I was of them. We saw each other at opposite ends of a long hallway and they started tea bagging the ground, then I did it back just to be funny and we went our separate ways. I had no idea it was a truce signal 😂
The tea-bag.... of FRIENDSHIP !
This game is alpha early access?? Literally could've fooled me. My wife and I booted up for the first time last night, and immediately I was immersed in the sound design. The hit boxes are tight and impacts are weighty and can be felt consistently. We had so much fun we upgraded to legendary.
I'm so glad you guys are having fun with it. It's a ton of value for 30 $s IMHO. I'm talking about 100's of hours of entertainment if you really take to it.
The development history for this game is a long and winding road. The elements you bring up have been consistently strong since the game held public playtests over a year ago, but the dev team has taken some meandering jaunts through terrible experiments, trying to make this game even more hardcore. The version you are playing now is best the game has ever been and we are all hoping it continues this trajectory into future.
A pretty good general guide for new players, so far 9h in and figured pretty much all of it on my own, so far didn't fight that many 'rare' monsters and still trying/learning their patterns. I would add a couple things into the guide though, like traps, types and ways of dealing with them. Map icons and their meaning (so far I learned portals, rope, stairs (saved my ass so many times it's insane)). Not all sellables are worth picking up, some sell for pennies and waste a lot of space in the inventory, when smaller items can be sold for more and take 4/6x less space. Mining and where to find ore (I did find it a couple of times but didn't have pickaxe and when I did take it - didn't find any ore or died xD)
Great job man! I think that type of videos are very important now as we have lots of new people coming in and they all struggle as we did on our first playtests. And I am sure some people after watching will get motivated to stay rather than rage quitting D&D. 😁👍 Very well done.
Thanks ! Just trying to help the new guys get over that initial hump.
Good video man. I've played since the playtest and think these types of videos are very good to get the new f2p players up to speed
Me too. Anything to make it a little bit easier on those who want to play !
Really great guide, thanks so much for making it. One thing about evasion, I noticed that when I play quiet and careful I get hunted down by experienced players.
But when I’m on my bard being super loud I’m the one people evade. Not sure how long that will last but its kinda like making myself big to scare a bear into thinking im the threat (im not)
Glad you enjoyed it.
That's a weird experience. I think this must be an outlier. I'd expect that to shift as folks are getting more comfortable with the basics.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le It has already shifted yeah. Occasionally new players will run away when I start playing a song out of fear of what it might do, but other than that no
I learned walking speed increases with no item and with strafe vs s, ty sir
Very important stuff right there, very important.

Coming soon! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you so much for this info! Literally just a couple of these tips upped my game tremendously! Embarrassed that I wasn't even aware of some of these basic things !
Wow, very glad to hear it. Don't be Embarrassed, Dark and Darker doesn't do the best job of introducing itself, nor making it easy to get started. I'm just glad to hear you've had success in applying some of these concepts !
I literally haven’t played yet but I feel like a pro watching this 👀
Remember how I opened the segment... You are likely going to die alot! I'm glad to hear that this vidya PUMPED YOU UP !
New cleric here! Found out the hard way your heals will Also target corpses. Skeleton corpses even.
Piss poor way to use your spell slots lemme tell ya
It's an interesting design decision to make all heals and buffs a skill shot. At first I was not a fan, but as I play more, I have begun to appreciate the nuance it creates in a lot of fights. One example, as a front liner, I often try and hold the ground between an enemy and their healer, to make it much harder for the enemy healer to help their friend, while increasing the likelihood I'll intercept that enemy heal / buff !
This was genuinely so helpful, thank you.
Very Happy to hear it was. I hope you are enjoying your adventures !
Great and comprehensive guide, thank you sir, good work. Will have something to link new players to.
Thanks and Please do ! It's why I made it.
Theres alot of gamees that use E as interact i absolute recommend swapping e to interact and F to second ability plus E is closer to wasd and u gonna interact more often than using ur ability

Fighters don't have any ranged options except the throwing axes now, do they?
@FlameJackstar Fighters have access to the crossbow by default, but if you equip the Perk Weapons Master you'll have the use of ALL ranged weapons. The selection of ranged options in the Squire will expand to include the recurve bow immediately, and that's what I would recommend until you've factioned up the Woodsman and unlocked the crossbow.

With experience, one can adapt a principle to a situation. It does not diminish the value of the principle. After many hours of pain, I'm able to employ more advanced mechanics and be successful, but I'm still recommending this fundamental even if I've largely moved beyond needing it.
Am I wrong to tell new players to avoid using the S key while learning ?

Nice guide for a beginner, this game is overwhelming for starters. Couple questions, what do you do with gold? what do you gain by leveling up? Does the game work with seasonal resets, with everyone having to start over like PoE?
For gold you can buy gear from merchants in the lobby. This can be armor weapons or supplies. I would recommend a healthy stock of healing items if anything at all, but it may be better to stock on gold early as you can also by another stash tab.
Every five levels up to 15 you gain a perk slot, allowing you to equip more perks. At level 20 you get free gear, same every 10 levels after.
So, Wade gave you some good advice in his reply. I'd recommend new players come into each new match with 3 stacks of 3, healing potions and bandages. I know that seems like alot, but that's the minimum I bring and Largely don't take damage from PVE. If you are still at a point where you are taking more damage while learning, bring more ! Bring Fires if you have spells or ability which reset by sitting around a fire ( all non-warlock spells, fighter's second wind etc ).
Then I would buy more stash space. As you get deeper into the learning curve you are going to want more storage.
Lastly, start accumulating choice pieces of gear and crafting materials. We'll be using those more as we progress into spec and builds.
in your "Class' section you have an array of options for perks which change elements of your character, you get one perk point at level 0, 5, ,10 and 15.
We'll be optimizing your character moving forward around, first your perk choices, second you gear choices and three your objectives.
Dungeonborne's developers just axed the south american server, so I'm gonna try this now :P
Aw, man that sucks ! Let me be the first to welcome you home !
10/10 Nice introduction to D&D.
Thank you, hoping all the new players are off to a great start !
Thank you for the vid :D. Btw, trying to find exit in this game is too headache for new players like me. Hopefully devs will give us some sort of point direction to nearest exit.
@semaht03 I'm hearing this a lot from new players. I've included two infographics in this short which might help. The full resolution infographics are in the discord linked in the description : ua-cam.com/users/shortsZ0VhCeCVQUA
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le Thank u
Hope they help !
You're the first person I've seen mention the squire. Im adding that to my notes for when I sit down to play next. Im a new player and started as a wizard. I'm not sure if I want to stick with it or start over as a cleric.
Wizard as your first character is likely the hardest of the hardcore options. The good news here, everything else you try will feel easier, a lot easier.
The wizard is SUPER reliant on positioning AND knowing exactly how much damage you are going to do to that monster or player. Without that level of game knowledge, it might feel impossible.
I would advise you swap it up and try something else if you are feeling frustrated. Come back to the Wizard when you feel like you have your legs under you.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8leI mean I tried Druid first and got utterly minced. The spell-use was NOT intuitive (took me 3 rounds and an online lookup to figure out how to cast), the shape changing just for me killed faster and I wan out of heals recovering from a single fight.
@@IRMentat I agree that druid is a very poor choice for introducing yourself to the game. Even once you master casting, the shifting mechanic and the hit box you have in animal forms make fighting monsters HARDER not easier than human form. I'd put druid up there with Wizard as classes to avoid as a new player.
Poor Timmy's are gonna get cleaned with today's patch.
Really hope everyone enjoys bringing in the gear they earn, but they are quickly gonna learn about the terminally online tryhards that will ONLY play norms to roll new players.
Glad IM is just trying new things, and it's great to see the game have such a healthy playerbase again!
You might be right. I gave it a spin after the servers came back up. I went in with 4 -5 decent greens and a stack of green bandages. I had 157 gear score. The last 5 people I saw in the lobby, after I extracted, had and average over 400 GS.
IM got into this trouble by not setting clear expectation with new players, I'm not sure this change is really much different. The smart ones will learn quickly I suppose.
On the ice map, sometimes I just die randomly to what I think is freezing temperatures but I don’t see a radius on my minimap. What’s going on there?
You are correct. The tick-bar above your mini-map will grow blue-er the closer it gets to the right. The first darker blue is a slight move speed reduction, the second dark blue = persistent damage.
Thanks for the video very helpful
Glad you enjoyed it !
I knew everything in this video, but I still don't know how the double layer health bar works...
So the Dark red bar with full opacity is your current health. The semi-transparent red bar is your 'potential health'. Potential health is the amount you can regenerate by sitting on the floor 'G', or by using bandages. When you get healing from a healing pot, a shrine, or a spell it both grants you health ( the red bar ) and raises the Potential Health bar unto a ceiling of 100 %.
Hope that helps !
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le thanks. I'd kind of figured out mechanically how it works, but it was still baffling to me for the first few days and I still wasn't sure fully what each bar represented. so that did help.
@@gobbledygook5000 Happy to help !
Nice video, sadly I decided to quit after a few hours of playing. Do you know of any game like that but without the PvP?
I don't. I know that the PVP element is a lot. You can be successful in this game though, by playing smartly AWAY from aggressive villains. I'm covering some of these tactics in my upcoming video on new player tactics !
All I have to say is thankyou
That's all I ever wanted :)
New F2P player here, I just reached 23 on my cleric, but after getting the last trait slot with 15 I don't see any new gaols or real progression to make, besides getting more gold and loot.
So my question is, what's the end goal and/or are there still something to progress in, besides getting better gear to get even better gear?
Once you've hit 4 traits, that portion of the progression is essentially over. Your character, without gear, is now as powerful as they will ever be. Though geared characters play and feel differently at some gear levels than in basic geared normals.
There is a lot to do and see, but you need to ask yourself if you are still enjoying the game independent of leveling. If the answer is no, it might be time to put it down for a while, or try some geared play, boss runs, lower levels of dungeons etc.
I think its safe to say that a lot of the game's most ardent supports are in love with the risk vs reward of getting gear, and effectively wagering it in pvp combat against others. For many this is their favorite part and the real end-game loop.
I'll be covering some of these topics, like how to effective collect gear for geared runs in my next installment in this series !
The funny thing is they greatly reduced the difficulty of the PVE in this version. Mobs do a lot less damage and have less health then they used to have.
Dark and Darker has certainly been harder in the past, but it's still one of the most staggeringly steep difficulty spikes of any game in recent memory, at onset. It's a combination of the game being bad at introducing itself and having little to no on-ramp for new players who are interested but not studied.
I've never been able to escape a dungeon. I go to the blue spots on the map and nothing happens. If they don't work anymore because someone used them, why are they still on the map? Do they respawn so you can use them again after some time?
The stairs and rope extracts are single use. They 'open' for use with between 6 - 3 minutes to go in the match.
The blue spots on the floor spawn three, single use portals at around 5 - 2.5 mins to go.
I did a quick short that might help you out : ua-cam.com/users/shortsZ0VhCeCVQUA?feature=share
Fantastic Video. If the thumbnail was a little less cluttered i reckon you could pull a load of viewers

will i get some bonuses when i bought dark and darker?
If you buy the game( or upgrade to legendary ) you will have access to 9 character slots, both normal and High roller game modes, the ability to buy and sell gear with other players on the marketplace.
You will be filled with a warm sense of fulfillment, knowing that you have stimulated the digital economy and completed your function, as a consumer.

Glad to hear it sir. I'll keep making them if you keep valuing them !
I have a question that might seem dumb. So whenever I swing my sword my characters movement slows way down until the animation is over, during this time does it matter if I’m holding S? It just seems like the speed doesn’t really kick in until the swing is over. Does back stepping matter while swinging?
Is it faster movement for you to strafe while mid-swing compared to S. My answer is I THINK so, but I'm not 100 % sure. If you find you are getting punished mid-swing a lot, you might consider taking your swings more carefully, both against mobs and players.
A good player will bait out your swing and punish you, just like I've advise you do to monsters, in this video. Particularly with big slow weapons like the zwiehander and the war maul.
Against FAST opponents, try and get all the way adjacent to them before comfiting to a swing. If you get the sense that they are trying to bait it out, hold it till you got them.
Remember to hit 'X' to stow your weapons when you need to close ground.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le another question, how important is it to sell to the correct vendor? Or can I just sell it to anyone who will accept it? Like should I put leather boots to leather guy and only weapons to sword smith? Or just sell it all to the swordsmith?
@@Monkeyman-qt1sm There is no advantage of selling leather goods to the leather worker. If it's sellable, it's valued the same to all vendors.
From a selling perspective, it's just the collector and everyone else.
You said it was split into chapters, it is not?
Sorry, you'll have to click the links in the expanded Description below. You tube wouldn't let me use official chapters when I published the video. Sorry again :(
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le ah I see now thanks !
Thanks for the guide but i dont understand what to buy with the gold as a f2p player?
When you get to ~1500 gold I'd recommend buying the first stash expansion tab for your stash. It will allow you to horde more money and store more quest items.
Step 1. Use that money to Buy basic health potions and basic bandages. Buy 3 stacks of 3 and bring them into every match you run. Use them ANY time you are not at 100 % health. Campfire kits are also very good. Many 'single use' abilities, like fighter's Second Wind, can be reset by sitting ( g key ) around a fire for it's whole duration. Fires also return most of your spells on caster classes. The woodsman sells fire kits.
Step 2. Keep an eye on your vendors and start buying / collecting from the dungeons, WHITE quality items which help your character and build. The jump in power from Grey quality to White quality is a significant one. Buy and collect whole sets of. preferably, white quality gear so you can have that advantage in runs.
Step 3. Start playing the gear game. It's more complex than I can go into here, but it will be a chapter in my upcoming video on Intermediate play.
Escape from Tarkov, but D&D world. Love the game so far
I'm glad you are enjoying it. It feels like most of the folks with Tarkov experience already know the value of a defensive playstyle, hope you learned a few ways to apply that Tarkov background to the Dark and Darker experience.
So you say all the gear is "rented" and we should sell it and go in with nothing - when do we start saving gear and making builds and stuff?
Until you have a firm grip on the strategic elements we covered in this vidya. But I'd frame it this way:
Are you are able to fight monsters without taking significant damage ?
Are you spending the majority of each run at 100 % health ?
Are you reliably able to extract using your map knowledge ?
If you answered no to any of these questions, that's an area I would focus on.
If you answered Yes to all three questions, you are ready for my next video which should be releasing soon ! I'll be covering gear and gearing strategy in that discussion.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le alright, was just wondering because the way you were talking about it in the video it seemed like you should never start saving gear lol
@@carson2889 Gear is a giant trap for new players and it develops soo many bad habits. Until you have some mastery of those three elements, it's really a waste of your time.
I need to get a mic but I will join the disorder cus I want to play this game with people
It's on a whole other level when you make friends or start using phy ops ! If you are able to, getting a pair of headphones with directional audio support AND a mic is the way to go. Playing with headphones is a huge advantage.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le I have been getting better as I play more with my friend, but a lot of people don’t respond to the crouch
But they’re lame and killing new people instead of someone who can contest them
what is your favorite weapon and class to use?
Tough Question. I'm going to duck it a bit and say, Ranger with Longbow / spear, Fighter with Falchion / Heater Shield / Crossbow and cleric with Morningstar / Heater Shield / Spellbook.
I really enjoy most of them and figuring our which weapons you enjoy is really personal preference. That's why Fighter is such a no-brainer pick for learning. With their WEAPONS MASTER perk, they can use any weapon in the game. Great to experiment with till you find something you love.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le thank you in general for the guide video!
I am for sure gonna experiment with all of the weapons.
Hey your guide was great, one thing that i think would be really great to understand was hoe the exits work, ive only escaped probably twice and that was by the stairs only, and one time the stairs were open but i couldnt ho through.
ua-cam.com/users/shortsZ0VhCeCVQUA I made a quick Short to help you out.
Really glad you liked it and found it helpful ! Remember that those ropes and stairs are single use !
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le Wow! thanks so much that made it really simple and easy to understand, much love
A simple solution from a simple man. Any time !
So my stash is full of good coins what do I do now
Be sure to invest in coin pouches from the treasurer to expand the capacity of your stash. Then open up a few new stash tabs so that you can hold more quest items and prepare to start building sets of gear, which I'll explain in more detail in the second episode in this series, Available now !
Thank you very much!
Very glad you enjoyed it !
Tbh I’m kinda surprised people say this game is hard, am I the only person who’s extracted pretty much every game other than the first 2-3 learning controls?
I think, with the surge of new players into the game, everyone is either at the same points in their learning curves, or playing nice.
I expect the bloodthirst will be kicking in over the next week or two and survival, at least from the pvp perspective will one again be difficult.
You are right though, this is the easiest start of wipe I've seen.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le I mean I’m just picking up the game for the first time tbh I’m brand new, but so many people are acting like you should have 2-300 hours before you even play high roller. But I’m 2-3 hours in and normals are so easy it’s almost boring
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le tbh the difficulty has me rethinking my purchase. The loot hardly matters because you can easily get out with the base gear. If I’m already getting bored of normals is high roller that much better?
@@Monkeyman-qt1sm High roller is more difficult, but I don't know if I'd say it's a better game mode. If you are getting bored, maybe refund or put it down for a while. You can always come back later if you get the itch.
@@Monkeyman-qt1sm The core of that advice is due to the player skill gaps. The players you run into in HR are going to be on you quickly, perhaps silently. They are likely going to beat you in three moves and you'll lose your gear.
If you are ok with this kinda loop while your skills come upto par, then try it ! I think, as a community, we are trying to protect newer folks from frustration.
Can you teach me how to play every game
I can try !
I was doing an Ice Caverns run. I cleared out an entire module in the timespan of the game, the one with the golden chest in the middle of it with the shielder. Conveniently there was a staircase there, so I am thinking "yeah once ive looted all of this, im outta here"
Skip forward to 30 seconds before the game ends, i am freezing to death and the staircase still hasnt opened,
Why? Do some exits just never open? Its happened to me multiple times now
They always open, but in this case, it sounds like someone might have snatched it out from under you. They have blue torches in front of them. Once the gate opens, the blue torches light up. If you see a staircase with the gate open, but the torches are off, then it's been used.
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le The gate was down but the torches were blue. I couldn't get in.
@@radiacia_3511 I've never seen that before. I think you ran into a glitch or bug I've never seen in 1500 + hours. Bummer !
If those torches are blue, the gate should be up. Sorry that happened to you as a new player !
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le yeah happened to me a couple of times
im still confused on the blue Staircases how do you activate them
Blue stairs will take you out, but they are often gated. Some time, usually between the 8 and 6 minute to go mark, the gate will open and allow 1 player to escape ! It's a matter of patience.
I've been playing normal solos and I'm confused about something:
Shrinking circle on the map doesn't happen. Instead bugs/earthquakes etc start happening. This is fine but it makes finding the random blue portals difficult. Why is that happening?
They have removed the circle from the game, in a step towards making Dark and Darker less of a Battle Royal and more of it's own thing.
If you are having trouble finding an exit, be on the lookout for gated stairways, holes in the ceiling above you and other blue markers on your mini-map. These blue icons represent where an exit option will appear, somewhere after the 'halfway' countdown for the run ( the clock is represented by ticks, just above the minimap )
Also, be on the lookout for a soft blue glow coming from a small stone circle set into the floor. This area will also spawn a trio of escape portals towards the END of the match countdown !
what i found is for me the ranger is good,
Ranger is really solid at SAFE PVE clearing for sure. Using him in PVP takes some time to understand position and kitting. Sounds like you are having fun ! good luck out there.
always W k E y the second you see an enemy, especially an ranger

@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le lies, trust a random comment instead

This is true.
You are my hero!
@molodecrus Glad you enjoyed it !
What did you mean by "module"?
Sorry, Module is the term the Dark and Darker team use to describe one of the square tiles on the map. For Example, the goblin caves map is a tile set of 5 x 5 modules; there are 25 modules in the goblin caves. That make better sense ?
@WrathofKoopa-fs8le absolutely! Thank you so much. And there is no need to apologize. This video is miles ahead of other tips and tricks videos. First one I've seen with how to cast abilities down to key bind detail. Love it!
@@stoogemoedude Glad it is helping. It's tough to distill 1000+ hours of experience and lingo down to essentials and not miss the mark here and there !

Glad you enjoyed it ! A link to my community discord is in the description section of this video. The game's discord is : discord.gg/darkanddarker
I dont think you should recommend cleric in this meta brother
I'm recommending cleric for it's survivability and it's relative simplicity. The main thing I'm looking for new players to achieve is to learn maps, mechanics and how to deal with the PVE. I think the cleric excels at all these things.
I'm not taking the PVP meta into consideration in the slightest, just what's likely to make the player comfortable enough to start working through fundamentals.
Outside of the pvp context, what would you recommend ?
whats the point of looting non common items as a f2p if you cant even take those items with you on your next run?
they just patched to the servers to allow you to take your gear into other lobbies with people who also brought in gear ! Be careful out there !
@vacsaaa8954 ua-cam.com/users/shortsv8JTNphV3CI Here is what I think you should know about today's change.
Comprehensive, concise and direct! Thank you!
Thank you ! I hope you enjoyed it !
epic guide
Thanks !
Brother I swear dying to players are harder than dying to monsters. I must have killed 10 people and died to mobs 20 times
This is what I mean when I say that the game has a steep learning curve. Be sure to move slowly, and try using a ranged attack to pull monsters back to a safe place and fight them one at a time !
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le Yeah thanks I started rogue but cus I'm f2p I crated a fighter and listening to your advice I'm getting better!
@@pandaog0478 NICE. Glad to hear it. Good luck out there.
Instructions unclear, game is stuck on connecting on launch
Sadly, not a problem I can really assist with. But it does remind me a bit of an apocryphal anecdote you might enjoy :
A new company captain is reviewing standing orders and finds he has two soldiers guarding a certain bench. He asks his sergeants why they're guarding the bench ? They say it's a standing order before their time. He calls the previous commander up at his new billet, now a major, asking why he gave the order, same answer. So he calls that commander, now a lt. Colonel asking why he ordered it, gets the same answer; ordered by the previous commander. So on and so forth until he gets a hold of an old retired 4 star General.
He politely calls him up and asks him why he ordered his men to guard this bench?. The old retired General goes "wait, is the paint still wet?"
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le I’ve heard that before but replace bench with a shed containing ammo lol
@@UAS0 You hear the one about two privates ordered to guard an anvil in the desert for 24 hours ?
@@WrathofKoopa-fs8le no lol
@@UAS0 An infantry Sargent drives two privates into the field during a training exercise, their mission is to guard a 70 kg anvil, in the desert, for 24 hours. They are briefed and left with basic, essential gear and told to remain vigilant on that position, with the anvil for 24 hours. They have 2 canteens of water, 2 MREs and 180 rounds of .556.
The Sargent returns 23 hours later to check on the men. He finds the anvil broken in half, with the other half of it missing. MREs and water are gone, no shots fired, 1 weapon and one private’s BDUs are missing as well, leaving private #2 completely naked. Neither soldier can explain the missing gear nor the condition of the Anvil but both Privates are A-OK.
I like this story as it speaks to the resilience of our men and women in uniform.
Cool guide, can you please suggest a good trio build for me and my friends, we just downloaded the game
You can't go wrong with Fighter, Cleric Ranger. This is a PVE juggernaut of a group comp and can easily clear the majority of PVE in the game quickly.
It's a more DEFENSIVE comp for PVP. This group doesn't want to push INTO other teams, it wants other teams to PUSH into it.
Also, don't step in your ranger's traps ! ( narrator "he will" )
