Finally Got The Call From The Repair Shop . Rail Guides, Chains , VVS Sprockets All Replaced , 22hrs Labor . Repair Total $3900 for this issue . Expensive Fix !!
Well luckily it's not our car so we don't have to do either of those things. :-) A few days after I filmed this video the sound (strangely) went away on its own...
I have no idea. Eventually the clicking noise went away on its own. Upon startup the timing chain definitely doesn't sound normal. The car didn't even belong to us; we were watching it for a friend who was out of town for several weeks. Recently they sold it and bought some new Mercedes SUV, an AMG version. When they traded this Range Rover in it had only 96,000 miles. They said it was giving them too many problems as it had gotten older.
oil level too high! check level using correct procedure & adjust. Eventually goes away because these Engines burn oil naturally & level goes down. notice the noise has air escaping bursts, this is excessive pressure caused by over fill.
I don't know how that would be the problem because several months earlier to this I made a full in-depth review of the vehicle without that noise (back in August of 2015) and this vid was posted in October so while it was in my possession it never even left my backyard, never mind the oil being changed where it could have been filled too high..... In this vid after the video my dad even checked the oil and said it was actually a bit *low* believe it or not. IDK. After a few days the sound went away on its own. I love these cars but they can be a nightmare to work on..... I'm kind of glad we don't own one. Just looking after one for someone is too much work. XD
Could be lifters, did the car sit for a while without starting the engine? If so get it to working temperature, then rev it at 3000rpm for at least 3minutes.
ha - i had the same issue on the same car - its going to sound like crap - it was a loose spark plug - well documented on the 540s them backing out ! check it out
Yeah had that issue with an older E32 7 BMW series with the M60 engine. Found out it was a failed spark plug. I didn't suspect it since I replaced the plugs with new 2 weeks prior.
what is wrong with a no power to coil on #1 RR 2.5 engine head gaskets changed, intake changed, starter and alt, THREE ECM's FUEL PUMP, fuel system cleaned, R & R all buy dealer. Has check engine light on and MISS number 1 ?
I'm not a mechanic but a few days after filming this video the sound went away on its own, so I don't know what the problem was. Some people in the comments say the lifters can make noise if the car's been sitting for a while (which this one has). As much as I love this car I'm happy it didn't belong to us and we were just watching it for someone as they were out of town for a while. These cars are endless money pits as they age. If I were you I'd just sell it and let it be someone else's problem...
Mine was caused in my 2004 RR HSE Full Size due to cheap oil, and having my hydraulic lifters. I was going to have the entire engine rebuilt. I just scrapped it (I had 285k miles on it). Mine was the same noise i noticed it one day when i stopped to get the mail, and rolled down my window, when i had my windows up never heard it. Took it to LR (big mistake) and they said my engine was shot, (Even tho i never had any issues with it, never left me stranded, or anything, it was the small things that keep breaking on me: cup holder, glove box, rear hatch, lights. There really great cars, but expensive to keep them maintained. Since I got ride of mine I have been looking for a newer one and can't wait to buy my next one, (This time with a NICE warranty).
I'm not sure what the problem was. It did this for a few days (when it wasn't driven for several weeks, only started and idled because the owner's were out of town for a while) but I think once it was kind of "driven hard" oil finally got to where it needed to go. Eventually the sound went away on its own but I don't know what the exact problem was or the cause of it. Some people have told me it sounds like the hydraulic lifters or VANOS making the sound.
@@RyanEmeryLovesCars Possibly the Vanos had seeped some oil out of it or the oil was extremely dirty and clogged the seal. Driving may have unclogged it.
Sometimes when vehicles sit the lifts are sufficiently lubricated and the motor can sound like lifter noise or a tapping sound like this, once highway driven then the noise tends to become more subdued especially if you use Marval mystery oil in the gas tank, doesn't hurt to add a little to oil if the level is low enough. My Ford Expedition 5.4 does this too after sitting, but once the aforementioned is accomplished then the noise is practically gone and once again sounds smooth. So just saying that can be a possibility and a very easy and inexpensive fix. Always use full synthetic oil (Manufacturer specific) and change every 5-6k miles and that motor will last a long time 🤙🏽❤️
Hi there. Did you solve the problem? I have the exact same noise on my BMW 540, wich uses the same M62TUB44 engine as the Range Rover. It looks like a hydraulic lifter has completely failed and it is awefully embarrasing to drive the car sounding like that :/
Try putting some (Seafoam) the white can with red writing, drive it for a few hundred miles, change oil with some good Mobil 1, but put a quart any good ATF like valvoline maxlife in the engine too. Drive it 3000 miles and by then the noise shouldn't come back as long as you change it often and use good oil.
That would trigger a CEL and pull a code for P0301 through P0308 depending on what cylinder was misfiring. Typically bad timing chain guides don't trigger a code unless they are really bad but by then it will be making a horrible loud noise.
George Koshy I'm sorry to hear that. :-/ But don't feel too bad about oil leaks. TONS of older cars develop them, including my Aurora. Curse those thin head gaskets.....
My best guess is this Range Rover is made for the North American market where our cars are in Miles Per Hour instead of Kilometers Per Hour. 270 kilometers per hour is equivalent to approximately 168 miles per hour, in which is a little faster than what the speedometer in this Range Rover shows. (This Range Rover's speedometer only goes up to 155 MPH for some reason.)
+RyanAudi39 I've been driving my car like that for the past 8 months its annoying and embarrassing but I took trips out of state I toped out at 153 mph, but the sound is loud when I'm idling. I did a oil change with and it's back to purring for just that day, afterwards it still makes that ticking sound. I had the same problem in my other mustang, never had engine trouble from that sound but then I didn't know what it was. I'm assuming it's a bad lifter. going to try some cheap methods to cure it. if it still sounds the same, time to go down to ford. but the car doesn't idle rough it runs fine. just that ticking sound... drives me crazy..
+The702Ghost the 2003 Range Rover L322 has a BMW 4.4 V8 just like my 2004 BMW X5 ( My and all 2007 and up Range rover has the JAR engine ) my X5 was doing the same #1 full synthetic oil is needed Mobil1 or Carterol #2 if you pull of the plastic covers over the valve vavers their is a round blk plastic valve its the pvc valves replace then its very cheep ebay had then for less thas $20 for the pair at that point 90% of the noise was gone --- next was spark plugs and coils there are updated coils because origial style fail and can cause clicking sounds and poor performance
Common fault with the E63 engine. The timing chain guides have a plastic runner on that breaks off at 10 years to 100k miles. The noise is the chain hitting the broken plastic guide
M60/62 engine. I actually prefer the older M60 engine since there is no Vanos seal to worry about since Vanos was introduced with the M62 engine and the horsepower is the same.
I don't know. Once the owner's ( my parent's friends) came back and brought it home (over a year ago when they came back from vacation) I'm not sure how the vehicle is doing as I have not been able to really inspect it in over a year. From the short amount of time and experience I have had with this Land Rover and BMW (the engine used in this RR *M62TUB44*) I'm not sure what the reliability is on them. I would love to own a 2003 RR but for one thing I don't know if I could afford to put gas in it (11 city, 17 hwy *very thirsty*) and taking it to the dealership is very expensive even for something like an oil change. If you don't have a lot cash to throw around as stuff breaks, than I would not buy one, especially if it has 145K miles..... Maybe if you get a very good deal on one, but I would be scared to own one as they can be nightmares if stuff breaks. These cars were I think around 80K brand new and were very sophisticated. (TONS of computers are in this beast) But don't just take my word for it. I don't have enough experience with them to really tell you. They're beautiful looking cars but they can be expensive to maintain.....

It’s VANOS rattle noise. The orings doesnt seal any more. You have 2 options: 1) buy the VANOS repair kit for m62tub44. 2) buy 2 rebuilded VANOS unit.
Well luckily it's not our car so we don't have to do either of those things. :-) A few days after I filmed this video the sound (strangely) went away on its own...
Hi. I have the same sound on my discovery 4.4 v8 . What is VANOS?
vanos problem , this is a bmw M62TUB44 enguine check out there is a lot of videos for this enguine problem
It sounds like the vanos solenoids, or the timing chain
I have no idea. Eventually the clicking noise went away on its own. Upon startup the timing chain definitely doesn't sound normal. When they traded this Range Rover in it had only 96,000 miles. They said it was giving them too many problems as it had gotten older.
Ryan Emery yea I would only ever get a 06 and newer range as they are definitely more reliable and sturdier motors
oil level too high! check level using correct procedure & adjust. Eventually goes away because these Engines burn oil naturally & level goes down.

I just read your description under the video. If it went away... Sometimes after a car is not started for a week or so the lifters luck of oil.
i finally took mine to the shop after its been sitting for 6 months. Found out it was the Timing Chain Rail Guides . $2800 Repair. Beware Yall.....

Sticky HVA lifter, not sure what the tour of the rest of the vehicle was for though :-)
Exactly! OCV(oil control valve) trouble...

Did you drive it while making that noise? I am hesitant on driving it
I was babysitting it for someone who was out of town, so no, it wasn't driven. But when they came back the noise disappeared.
So? Did you fixed it? What was the issue?
I'm not sure what the problem was. put Lucas engine oil treatment first then check the knock sensor

+RyanAudi39 Did you check the bearings for water pump pulley? this resonance could be coming from a bad bearing or broken pulley I guess.
Its The VANOS. You can buy the repair kit or buy a rebuilded VANOS unit (2 of the m)
Start it up and keep the rpm between 3k and 4k for 1 minute it will go away it's a bmw engine trust me
Mine Just started Making This Sound the Other Day
good luck if the rails go while driving like mine did, expect at least 2,000 minimum job,,,and hope you didnt damage anything else,,

LoL it's not an old Chevy V8 small block. Sounds like his timing chain guides have worn.
dont know what happened but when mine sounded like that i just changed the coil packs and it went away

it the lifers on the car are knock sensor.
Lifters? These are dual over head cam engines not an old Chevy small block.
