For a few minutes I thought I was losing it. I remembered watching the older video first, so the first part of this threw me. Glad to see the update though. One of these days that toy will be whole again! Great job on giving it new life with the talking though.
I think it is cool that you actually got it talking again! As I recall.... after you play with it for a while.... it never really actually said the exact letter it landed on.... always kind of random.... You are amazing!

I think you could probably find parts for your toys in looking at things like parts for miniatures or even something crazy as cosplay. In all my time crafting and trying to find ways to make different things work out, i've learned that you can find answers to problems ANYWHERE.
as expected there are 26 starting lead in groves on the outside of the record that lead to 26 unique spiral grove recordings for each letter , when you turn the bee pointer its rotation indexes the record to line up with the correct lead in groove for the selected letter, (hold the pointer so it does not turn when you pull the string the mechanism is supposed to lock its rotation when the sting is pulled so the index wont be lost) if the bee pointer is keyed property to the record underneath, the issue is likely that the string is not drawing the stylus to the proper set down point on the outside edge of the record so its being dropped into the wrong groove spiral and plays the wrong selection. The stylus is drawn out against a stopper by its friction against the string when the string is pulled and must move freely or it wont index the proper lead in groove (I think this might be dependent on the angle of the string as its wound on the drum as to how it pulls the stylus arm out so check this as it it might be threaded or wound wrong or the stylus arm is binding if its clamped down too hard against the speaker and this makes it bind ,, the tolerance precision with that many selections is very tight so there cant be any moment slop in the alignment or you wont get whats selected. .most of the newer see and says have fewer selections because of this challenge. a lot of things have to be in alignment so that it cues the right starting point for each selection .

(I don't know where to spitball ideas at you, so i'll just keep doing it in the comments) You should consider doing something like Twitch streaming when you're cleaning and fixing toys like this. I know that YT wants long videos these days, but i don't know exactly how enticing videos like these are to viewers in terms of getting you watch numbers. There are DEFINITELY people out there that love this kind of stuff and can certainly help you in real-time that you'd be able to chat with. Plus, i think Twitch has a donation feature that i bet some people would gladly use for you. You're one of like MAYBE three people that i've ever considered donating like that to, and i'm sure that i'm not the only one that would.
The option has been tossed around a little. I even have the set-up to do the videos live with my 4K camera. I ran tests for live streaming, set-up the software, but then had to move onto other projects. I should make it my goal for 2018 - now, I'm gearing up for Halloween and Christmas.
