  • Securely attaching a throw line to the stern of your canoe has the advantage of being used as a swim line should you capsize. This cane allow you to self rescue by getting yourself to the bank and holding or better still, retrieving your boat.
    While training on the Tryweryn, I needed to use my swimline after a somewhat silly capsize... You can see the rest of what happened in the video :-)

    A fine example of how, regardless of experience, it can very quickly go wrong. Nice recovery!

    Thanks for this. that's a trick I'd honestly never seen before. I've used a short 15 ft painter line on my stern but not a long swim line like that. Something I've always done is to glue D-rings to the bottom of my canoes then securely strap my dry bags down. I've found that my boats will usually self right after a spill that way, with surprisingly little water in them. It makes recovery much easier.

    Good to see you capsize, for making it real. (No comment for trolling). But this creates respect and shows that only by doing is giving the experience you need. Hope to see some more !

      +Trailtraveller Yes, all the good people swim ;-) And the only way of getting good is by making mistakes. If you are not making mistakes, you are not trying hard enough... There'll certainly be more canoeing adventures to come Rody. All the best, Paul

      +Red Owl Bushcraft Hey Kurt, thanks for your comments. I'm glad you are finding these videos interesting and that its stimulated an interest in open boating. In terms of answering your question - forgive my ignorance but where are you based? Let me know and I can tailor the answer better... :-) Hope to hear from you soon but if I don't hear from you in the meantime, have a great Christmas :-) ATB, Paul

    Good video and useful information that's forsure. Curious if this river has trout, or salmon runs in it during the spring/fall looks like premium water for trout.

      @PaulKirtley  8 років тому +1

      +Infinite Outdoors Thanks, glad you liked the video. The river definitely has salmon. Even though the dam further upstream obliterated some of the old spawning grounds, salmon still spawn here. It most likely has trout too - as you say, it looks perfect. ATB, Paul

    Without a swim line that canoe could have been long gone if you where to be alone :)

      +NorwegianWoods Hi Martin! Yes, having a swimline has made all the difference to the ease of recovery on a few occasions for me :-) I definitely know its value. Thanks for watching. Warm regards, Paul

    nice vid paul,just a question was that filmed with the waterproof backdoor on the go pro?the sound was really clear.

    • @PaulKirtley
      @PaulKirtley  8 років тому

      +Danny Barrett Hi Danny, yes all the first person point-of-view video was filmed with a GoPro Hero 3 with a waterproof back. Some of the bankside footage was on Sheri's Samsung Galaxy S5/S6 and the sound until I went under the bridge was a blend of the sound from the two devices. Hope this helps. Cheers, Paul

    Losing your paddle is like losing your fero rod.

    Sort of not “self” rescue if you had a teammate retreive your boat. Haha.

      Rescue and retrieval aren’t exactly the same , I’d say it was a self rescue and group retrieval
